< 1 Chronicles 9 >
1 So all Israel were recorded by their genealogies, and, behold, they are written in the book of the Kings of Israel; but [the men of] Judah were carried away into exile to Babylon for their unfaithfulness.
So all Israel was recorded in genealogies. They were recorded in the book of the kings of Israel. As for Judah, they were carried away in exile to Babylon because of their sin.
2 And the first inhabitants that [dwelt again] in their possessions in their cities, were the Israelites, the priests, the Levites, and the temple-servants.
The first to resettle in their cities were some Israelites, priests, Levites, and temple servants.
3 And in Jerusalem dwelt some of the children of Judah, and of the children of Benjamin, and of the children of Ephraim, and Menasseh.
Some descendants of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh lived in Jerusalem.
4 'Uthai the son of 'Ammihud, the son of 'Omri, the son of Imri, the son of Bani, of the children of Perez the son of Judah.
The settlers included Uthai son of Ammihud son of Omri son of Imri son of Bani, one of the descendants of Perez son of Judah.
5 And of the Shilonites: 'Assayah the first-born, and his sons.
Among the Shelanites were Asaiah the firstborn and his sons.
6 And of the sons of Zerach: Je'uel, and their brethren, six hundred and ninety.
Among the descendants of Zerah was Jeuel. Their descendants numbered 690.
7 And of the sons of Benjamin: Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Hodavyah, the son of Hassenuah,
Among the descendants of Benjamin were Sallu son of Meshullam son of Hodaviah son of Hassenuah.
8 And Yibneyah the son of Jerocham, and Elah the son of 'Uzzi, the son of Michri, and Meshullam the son of Shephatyah, the son of Re'uel, the son of Yibniyah;
There were also Ibneiah son of Jeroham; Elah son of Uzzi son of Mikri; and Meshullam son of Shephatiah son of Reuel son of Ibnijah.
9 And their brethren, according to their generations, nine hundred and fifty and six. All these men were chiefs of the divisions of their family divisions.
Their relatives written in the genealogical lists numbered 956. All these men were heads of fathers' houses for their fathers' houses.
10 And of the priests: Jeda'yah, and Jehoyarib, and Jachin.
The priests were Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, and Jakin.
11 And 'Azaryah the son of Chilkiyah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Merayoth, the son of Actitub, the ruler of the house of God.
There was also Azariah son of Hilkiah son of Meshullam son of Zadok son of Meraioth son of Ahitub, the one in charge of the house of God.
12 And 'Adayah the son of Jerocham, the son of Pashchur, the son of Malkiyah, and Ma'sai the son of 'Adiel, the son of Jachzerah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Meshillemith, the son of Immer:
There was Adaiah son of Jeroham son of Pashhur son of Malkijah. There was also Maasai son of Adiel son of Jahzerah son of Meshullam son of Meshillemith son of Immer.
13 And their brethren, chiefs of their family divisions, were one thousand and seven hundred and sixty, very able men for the work of the service of the house of God.
Their relatives, who were leaders for their fathers' houses, numbered 1,760. They were very capable men in the work in the house of God.
14 And of the Levites: Shema'yah the son of Chasshub, the son of 'Azrikam, the son of Chashabyah, of the sons of Merari;
Among the Levites, there was Shemaiah son of Hasshub son of Azrikam son of Hashabiah, among the descendants of Merari.
15 And Bakbakkar, Cheresh, and Galal, and Matthanyah the son of Micha, the son of Zichri, the son of Assaph;
There were also Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal, and Mattaniah son of Mika son of Zikri son of Asaph.
16 And 'Obadiah the son of Shema'yah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun; and Berechyah the son of Assa, the son of Elkanah, that dwelt in the villages of the Netophathites.
There were also Obadiah son of Shemaiah son of Galal son of Jeduthun; and Berekiah son of Asa son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.
17 And the gatekeepers were Shallum, and 'Akkub, and Talmon, and Achiman, and their brethren, Shallum being the chief;
The doorkeepers were Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their descendants. Shallum was their leader.
18 And up to this time they are in the king's gate to the eastward: they are the gatekeepers for the camps of the children of Levi.
Previously they stood guard at the king's gate on the east side for the camp of Levi's descendants.
19 And Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebyassaph, the son of Korach, and his brethren, of the house of his father, the Korchites, being over the work of the service, were the watchmen at the threshold of the tabernacle: and their fathers, being over the camp of the Lord, were the watchmen at the entrance [thereof].
Shallum son of Kore son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his relatives from the house of his father, the Korahites, were in charge of the work of the guard service. They guarded the door to the tent, as their ancestors had guarded the camp of Yahweh, and they also had guarded the entrance.
20 And Phinehas the son of El'azar was the ruler over them in times past; [and] the Lord was with him.
Phinehas son of Eleazar had been in charge of them in the past, and Yahweh had been with him.
21 [And] Zechariah the son of Meshelemyah was gatekeeper at the entrance of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was guard of the entrance to the temple, the “tent of meeting.”
22 All of these selected to be gatekeepers at the thresholds were two hundred and twelve. These were recorded according to their genealogy in their villages; [and they were] those [whom] David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their trust.
All those who were chosen as gatekeepers at the entrances numbered 212. Their names were recorded in the people's records in their villages. David and Samuel the seer had placed them into their positions of trust.
23 Both they and their children had the oversight over the gates of the house of the Lord, [namely, ] the house of the tabernacle, as watches.
So they and their children guarded the gates of the house of Yahweh, the tabernacle.
24 On four quarters were the gatekeepers, toward the east, the west, the north, and the south.
The gatekeepers were posted on all four sides, toward the east, west, north, and south.
25 And their brethren, who were in their villages, had to come after every seven days from time to time in common with these.
Their brothers, who lived in their villages, came in for seven-day rotations, in turn.
26 For in [their] trust were these four chief gatekeepers— these Levites, and they were [appointed] over the chambers and treasuries of the house of God.
But the four leaders of the gatekeepers, who were Levites, were assigned to guard the rooms and storerooms in the house of God.
27 And they lodged round about the house of God; because upon them rested the duty of watching, and they had the supervision of the opening thereof each and every morning.
They would spend the night in their posts all around the house of God, for they were responsible for guarding it. They would open it each morning.
28 And some of them had the charge of the vessels for the service; for by number did they bring them in, and by number did they carry them out.
Some of them were in charge of the temple's equipment; they counted the articles when they were brought in and when they were taken out.
29 Some of them also were appointed over the vessels, and over all the vessels of the sanctuary, and over the fine flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense, and the spices.
Some of them also were assigned to take care of the holy things, the equipment, and the supplies, including the fine flour, the wine, the oil, the frankincense, and the spices.
30 And some of the sons of the priests prepared the mixture of the spices.
Some of the priests' sons mixed the spices.
31 And Matthithyah, one of the Levites, who was the first-born of Shallum the Korchite, had the trust over the meat-offerings that were baked in the pans.
Mattithiah, one of the Levites, who was the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, was in charge of preparing bread for the offerings.
32 And others of their brethren, of the sons of the Kehathites, were over the orders of the shew-bread, to prepare it every sabbath.
Some of their brothers, descendants of the Kohathites, were in charge of the bread of the presence, to prepare it every Sabbath.
33 But these the singers, the chiefs of the divisions of the Levites, remained in the chambers free of service; for day and night were they obliged to engage in that work.
The singers and heads of the Levites' fathers' houses lived in rooms at the sanctuary when they were free from work, because they had to carry out their assigned tasks day and night.
34 These are the chiefs of the divisions of the Levites, being the chiefs for their generations: these dwelt at Jerusalem.
These were leaders of fathers' houses among the Levites, as listed in their genealogical records, chief men. They lived in Jerusalem.
35 And in Gib'on dwelt the father of Gib'on, Je'iel; and the name of his wife was Ma'achah;
The father of Gibeon, Jeiel, whose wife's name was Maakah, lived in Gibeon.
36 And his first-born son was 'Abdon, then Zur, and Kish, and Ba'al, and Ner, and Nadab,
His firstborn son was Abdon, then his sons Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab,
37 And Gedor, and Achyo, and Zechariah, and Mikloth.
Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth.
38 And Mikloth begat Shimam. And they also dwelt alongside of their brethren at Jerusalem, with their brethren.
Mikloth was the father of Shimeam. They also lived near their brothers in Jerusalem.
39 And Ner begat Kish; and Kish begat Saul; and Saul begat Jehonathan, and Malki-shua', and Abinadab, and Eshba'al.
Ner was the father of Kish. Kish was the father of Saul. Saul was the father of Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab, and Esh-Baal.
40 And the son of Jehonathan was Merib-ba'al: and Merib-ba'al begat Michah.
The son of Jonathan was Merib-Baal. Merib-Baal was the father of Micah.
41 And the sons of Michah were, Pithon, and Melech, and Thachrea'.
The sons of Micah were Pithon, Melek, Tahrea, and Ahaz.
42 And Achaz begat Ja'rah; and Ja'rah begat 'Alemeth, 'Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begat Moza;
Ahaz was the father of Jadah. Jadah was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri. Zimri was the father of Moza.
43 And Moza begat Bin'a; ! and Rephayah his son, El'assah his son, Azel his son.
Moza was the father of Binea. Binea was the father of Rephaiah. Rephaiah was the father of Eleasah. Eleasah was the father of Azel.
44 And Azel had six sons, and these are their names, 'Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and She'aryah, and 'Obadiah, and Chanan: these were the sons of Azel.
Azel's six sons were Azrikam, Bokeru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan. These were Azel's sons.
