1 And the sons of Issachar were, Tola', and Puah, Yashub, and Shimron, four.
Issachar’s four sons were Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron.
2 And the sons of Tola': 'Uzzi, and Rephayah, and Jeriel, and Jachmai, and Yibsam, and Shemuel, heads of their family divisions, of Tola', being valiant men of might, after their descent. Their number in the days of David was two and twenty thousand and six hundred.
Tola’s sons were Uzzi, Rephaiah, Jeriel, Jahmai, Ibsam, and Samuel (OR, Shemuel). They were all leaders of the clans [descended from] them. In the record of Tola’s descendants were the names of 22,600 men who served in the army during the time that David was the king [of Israel].
3 And the sons of 'Uzzi: Yizrachyah. And the sons of Yizrachyah: Michael, and 'Obadiah, and Joel, Yishiyah, five, chief men all of them.
Uzzi’s son was Izrahiah. Izrahiah’s five sons were Michael, Obadiah, Joel, and Isshiah. Izrahiah and his sons were all leaders of their clans.
4 And with them according to their descent, after their family divisions, were bands of the army for war, six and thirty thousand men; for they had many wives and sons.
In the record of Izrahiah’s descendants were the names of 36,000 men who served in the army because they had many wives and children.
5 And their brethren of all the families of Issachar were valiant men of might, eighty and seven thousand reckoned by their genealogies in all.
In the records of the clans descended from Issachar were the names of 87,000 men who served in the army.
6 Of Benjamin: Bela', and Becher, and Jedi'ael, three.
[Some of the] sons of Benjamin were Bela, Beker, and Jediael.
7 And the sons of Bela': Ezbon, and 'Uzzi, and 'Uzziel, and Jerimoth, and 'Iri, five, heads of family divisions, being mighty men of valor; and they were reckoned by their genealogies twenty and two thousand and thirty and four.
Bela’s five sons were Ezbon, Uzzi, Uzziel, Jerimoth, and Iri. They were all leaders of clans. In the records of the clans descended from Bela there were names of 22,034 men who served in the army.
8 And the sons of Becher: Zemirah, and Jo'ash, and Eli'ezer, and Elyo'enai, and 'Omri, and Jeremoth, and Abiyah, and 'Anathoth, and 'Alemeth. All these are the sons of Becher.
Beker’s sons were Zemirah, Joash, Eliezer, Elioenai, Omri, Jeremoth, Abijah, Anathoth, and Alemeth.
9 And reckoned by their genealogy after their descent, heads of their family divisions, mighty men of valor, there were twenty thousand and two hundred.
In the records of the clans descended from Beker were the names of 20,200 men and leaders of the clans who served in the army.
10 And the sons of Jedi'ael: Bilhan. And the sons of Bilhan: Je'ush, and Benjamin, and Ehud, and Kena'anah, and Zethan, and Tharshish, and Achishachar.
Jediael’s son was Bilhan. Bilhan’s sons were Jeush, Benjamin, Ehud, Kenaanah, Zethan, Tarshish, and Ahishahar.
11 All these the sons of Jedi'ael by the heads of their divisions, being mighty men of valor, were seventeen thousand and two hundred, fit to go out to the army for war.
They were all leaders of clans descended from them. There were 17,200 of them who served in the army.
12 And Shuppim, and Chuppim, the children of 'Ir, and Chushim, the sons of Acher.
Shuppim and Huppim were descendants of Ir. [One of] the descendants of Aher was Hushim.
13 The sons of Naphtali: Jachziel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shallum, the sons of Bilhah.
Naphtali’s sons were Jahziel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. They were all descendants of [Jacob’s slave wife] Bilhah.
14 The sons of Menasseh: Assriel, whom [his wife] bore; his concubine the Aramitess bore Machir the father of Gil'ad.
[This is a list of] Manasseh’s descendants. Manasseh had a slave wife who was from Syria. She was the mother of Asriel and Makir. Makir was the father of Gilead.
15 And Machir took for wife [the sister] of Chuppim and Shuppim, whose sister's name was Ma'achah. And the name of the second was Zelophehad: and Zelophehad had daughters.
Makir [had two wives]. They were from the clans of Huppim and Shuppim. One of Makir’s wives was named Maacah. Another descendant [of Makir] was Zelophehad. Zelophehad [had no sons; he] had only daughters.
16 And Ma'achah the wife of Machir bore a son, and she called his name Peresh; and the name of his brother was Sheresh; and his sons were Ulam and Rekem.
Makir’s wife Maacah gave birth to two sons whom she named Peresh and Sheresh. Sheresh’s sons were Ulam and Rakem.
17 And the sons of Ulam: Bedan. These were the sons of Gil'ad, the son of Machir, the son of Menasseh.
Ulam’s son was Bedan. All those [men were considered to be] descendants of Gilead, who was the son of Makir and grandson of Manasseh.
18 And his sister Hammolecheth bore Isshod, and Abi'ezer, and Machlah.
Makir’s sister name was Hammoleketh who was the mother of Ishdod, Abiezer, and Mahlah.
19 And the sons of Shemida' were, Achyan, and Shechem, and Likchi, and Ani'am.
[One son of Gilead was] Shemida, whose sons were Ahian, Shechem, Likhi, and Aniam.
20 And the sons of Ephraim: Shuthelach, and Bered his son, and Tachath his son, and El'adah his son, and Tachath his son,
[This is a list of] the descendants of Ephraim. One son of Ephraim’s was Shuthelah. Shuthelah’s son was Bered. Bered’s son was Tahath. Tahath’s son was Eleadah. Eleadah’s son was [also named] Tahath.
21 And Zabad his son, and Shuthelach his son, and 'Ezer, and El'ad, whom the men of Gath that were born in that land slew, when they came down to take away their cattle.
Tahath’s son was Zabad. Zabad’s son was Shuthelah. [Ephraim’s other sons, ] Ezer and Elead, went to Gath [city] to steal some cows and sheep. But they were both killed by some of the men from that city.
22 And Ephraim their father mourned many days, and his brethren came to comfort him.
Their father Ephraim cried/mourned for them for many days, and his family came to comfort him.
23 And he went in to his wife, and she conceived, and bore a son, and he called his name Beri'ah, because misfortune had come into his house.
Then he and his wife had sex [EUP] [again], and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. Ephraim named him Beriah [which resembles the word ‘trouble’, ] because of the trouble that his family had experienced.
24 And his daughter was Sheerah, who built Beth-choron the lower, and the upper, and Uzzen-sheerah.
Ephraim’s daughter was Sheerah. Her workers built [three towns]: Lower Beth-Horon, Upper Beth-Horon, and Uzzen-Sheerah.
25 And Rephach was his son, also Resheph, and Telach his son, and Tachan his son.
[Another] son of Ephraim was Rephah. Rephah’s son was Resheph. Resheph’s son was Telah. Telah’s son was Tahan.
26 La'dan his son, 'Ammihud his son, Elishama' his son,
Tahan’s son was Ladan. Ladan’s son was Ammihud. Ammihud’s son was Elishama.
27 Non his son, Jehoshua' his son.
Elishama’s son was Nun. Nun’s son was Joshua, [the man who led the Israelis after Moses died].
28 And their possessions and dwelling-places were, Beth-el and its villages, and at the east Na'aran, and at the west Gezer, with its villages, and Shechem with its villages, as far as Gazzah and its villages.
[This is a list of] the cities and areas where the descendants of Ephraim lived: Bethel and the nearby villages; Naaran to the east; Gezer to the west and the nearby villages; and Shechem and the nearby villages. Those villages extended [north] as far as Ayyah and the nearby villages.
29 And by the borders of the children of Menasseh: Beth-shean and its villages, Ta'nach and its villages, Megiddo and its villages, Dor and its villages. In these dwelt the children of Joseph the son of Israel.
Along the border of the area where the descendants of Manasseh lived were these towns: Beth-Shan, Taanach, Megiddo, and Dor, and the nearby villages. The people who lived in all those places were descendants of Jacob’s son Joseph.
30 The sons of Asher: Yimnah, and Yishvah, and Yishvi, and Beri'ah, and Serach their sister.
Asher’s sons were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah. Their sister was Serah.
31 And the sons of Beri'ah: Cheber, and Malkiel, who is the father of Birzavith.
Beriah’s sons were Heber and Malkiel. Malkiel was the father of Birzaith
32 And Cheber begat Yaphlet, and Shomer, and Chotham, and Shu'a their sister.
Heber was the father of Japhlet, Shomer, and Hotham. Their sister was Shua.
33 And the sons of Yaphiet: Passach, and Bimhal, and 'Ashvath. These are the children of Yaphlet.
Japhlet’s sons were Pasach, Bimhal, and Ashvath.
34 And the sons of Shemer: Achi, and Rohgah, and Chubbah and Aram.
Japhlet’s [younger] brother was Shomer. Shomer’s sons were Rohgah, Hubbah, and Aram.
35 And the sons of his brother Helem: Zophach, and Yimna', and Shelesh, and 'Amal
Shomer’s [younger] brother was Hotham (OR, Helem). Hotham’s sons were Zophah, Imna, Shelesh, and Amal.
36 The sons of Zophach: Suach, and Charnepher, and Shu'al, and Berl, and Yimrah,
Zophah’s sons were Suah, Harnepher, Shual, Beri, Imrah,
37 Bezer, and Hod, and Shamma, and Shilshah, and Yithran, and Beera.
Bezer, Hod, Shamma, Shilshah, Ithran [whose other name was Jether], and Beera.
38 And the sons of Jether: Jephunneh, and Pisspah, and Ara.
Jether’s sons were Jephunneh, Pispah, and Ara.
39 And the sons of 'Ulla: Arach, and Chaniel, and Rizya.
[Another descendant of Asher was] Ulla, whose sons were Arah, Hanniel, and Rizia.
40 All these were the children of Asher, heads of their family divisions, selected mighty men of valor, chiefs of the princes. And being recorded according to their genealogy for the army for the war, their number was of men twenty and six thousand.
All those men were descendants of Asher, and they were all leaders of their clans. They were brave warriors and excellent leaders. In the record of the clans that are descended from Asher are [the names of] 26,000 men who served in the army.
