< Psalms 106 >
1 Alleluia. Give thanks to the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy [endures] for ever.
Hallelujah! Give thanks to the Lord for his goodness, for his kindness endures forever.
2 Who shall tell the mighty acts of the Lord? [who] shall cause all his praises to be heard?
Who can describe his heroic deeds, or publish all his praise?
3 Blessed are they that keep judgment, and do righteousness at all times.
Happy they who act justly, and do righteousness evermore.
4 Remember us, O Lord, with the favor [you have] to your people: visit us with your salvation;
Remember me, Lord, as you remember your people, and visit me with your gracious help.
5 that we may behold the good of your elect, that we may rejoice in the gladness of your nation, that we may glory with your inheritance.
May I see the good fortune of your elect, may I share in the joy of your nation, and in the pride of your heritage.
6 We have sinned with our fathers, we have transgressed, we have done unrighteously.
We, like our fathers, have sinned, we have done perversely and wickedly
7 Our fathers in Egypt understood not your wonders, and remembered not the multitude of your mercy; but provoked [him] as they went up by the Red Sea.
In the land of Egypt our fathers, all heedless of your wonders, and unmindful of your great kindness, at the Red Sea defied the Most High.
8 Yet he saved them for his name's sake, that he might cause his mighty power to be known.
But true to his name he saved them, in order to show his might.
9 And he rebuked the Red Sea, and it was dried up: so he led them through the deep as through the wilderness.
He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried; they marched through the depths as through desert,
10 And he saved them out of the hand of them that hated [them], and redeemed them out of the hand of the enemy.
saved from the hand of the hostile, redeemed from the hand of the foe.
11 The water covered those that oppressed them: there was not one of them left.
The waters covered their enemies: not one of them was left.
12 Then they believed his words, and celebrated his praise.
So then they believed in his words, and began to sing his praise.
13 They made haste, they forgot his works; they waited not for his counsel.
But soon they forgot his deeds: they did not wait for his counsel.
14 And they lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the dry [land].
Their greed was ravenous in the desert; they put God to the test in the wilderness.
15 And he gave them their request, and sent fullness into their souls.
He gave them the thing they had asked for, but sent wasting disease among them.
16 They provoked Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the holy one of the Lord.
The camp grew jealous of Moses and of Aaron, holy one of the Lord.
17 The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and closed upon the congregation of Abiron.
The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered Abiram’s company.
18 And a fire was kindled in their congregation, and a flame burnt up the sinners.
Fire broke out on their company, flame kindled upon the wicked.
19 And they made a calf in Choreb, and worshipped the graven image,
They made a calf in Horeb, and bowed to the molten image.
20 and they changed their glory into the similitude of a calf that feeds on grass.
They exchanged their glorious God for the image of ox that eats grass.
21 They forgot God that saved them, who had wrought great deeds in Egypt;
They forgot the God who had saved them by mighty deeds in Egypt
22 wondrous [works] in the land of Cham, and terrible things at the Red Sea.
Wonders in the land of Ham, terrors by the Red Sea.
23 So he said that he would have destroyed them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn [him] away from the fierceness of his anger, so that he should not destroy them.
So he vowed, and would have destroyed them, but for Moses his elect, who stepped into the breach before him, to divert his deadly wrath.
24 Moreover they set at nothing the desirable land, and believed not his word.
They spurned the delightsome land, they refused to believe in his word.
25 And they murmured in their tents: they listened not to the voice of the Lord.
They grumbled in their tents, would not listen to the voice of the Lord.
26 So he lifted up his hand against them, to cast them down in the wilderness;
So he swore with uplifted hand to lay them low in the wilderness;
27 and to cast down their seed among the nations, and to scatter them in the countries.
to disperse their seed among heathen, to scatter them over the world.
28 They were joined also to Beelphegor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead. And they provoked him with their devices;
Then they joined them to Baal of Peor, and ate what was offered the dead.
29 and destruction, was multiplied among them.
They provoked him to wrath by their deeds, and plague broke out among them.
30 Then Phinees stood up, and made atonement: and the plague ceased.
Then Phinehas stood between, and so the plague was stayed;
31 And it was counted to him for righteousness, to all generations for ever.
and it was counted to him for righteousness unto all generations forever.
32 They provoked him also at the water of Strife, and Moses was hurt for their sakes;
They angered him at the waters of Meribah, through them it went ill with Moses.
33 for they provoked his spirit, and he spoke [unadvisedly] with his lips.
They rebelled against his spirit, and he uttered speech that was rash.
34 They destroyed not the nations which the Lord told them [to destroy];
They did not destroy the nations, as the Lord had commanded them;
35 but were mingled with the heathen, and learned their works.
but they mingled with the heathen, and learned to do as they did.
36 And they served their graven images; and it became an offense to them.
Their idol gods they worshipped, and they were ensnared by them.
37 And they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to devils,
They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons.
38 and shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Chanaan; and the land was defiled with blood.
They poured out innocent blood the blood of their sons and daughters whom they offered to Canaan’s idols, and the land was polluted with blood.
39 and was polluted with their works; and they went a whoring with their own devices.
They became unclean by their works, and adulterous in their deeds.
40 So the Lord was very angry with his people, and he abhorred his inheritance.
Then the Lord’s fury was on his people, filled with horror at his inheritance.
41 And he delivered them into the hands of [their] enemies; and they that hated them ruled over them.
He delivered them to the heathen, to the sway of those who hated them.
42 Ands their enemies oppressed them, and they were brought down under their hands.
Their enemies oppressed them, and subdued them under their hand.
43 Many a time he delivered them; but they provoked him by their counsel, and they were brought low by their iniquities.
Many a time he saved them, but they rebelled at his counsel, and were brought low by their wrongdoing.
44 You the Lord looked upon their affliction, when he heard their petition.
Yet he looked upon their distress, when he heard their cry.
45 And he remembered his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercy.
He remembered his covenant, and, in his great kindness, relented.
46 And he caused them to be pitied in the sight of all who carried them captive.
He caused them to be pitied by all who carried them captive.
47 Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from among the heathen, that we may give thanks to your holy name, that we may glory in your praise.
Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us out of the nations, to give thanks to your holy name, and to make our boast of your praise.
48 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting and to everlasting; and all the people shall say, Amen, Amen.
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. And let all the people say ‘Amen.’ Praise the Lord.
