< Proverbs 1 >
1 The Proverbs of Solomon son of David, who reigned in Israel;
O NA olelo akamai a Solomona ke keiki a Davida ke alii o ka Iseraela.
2 to know wisdom and instruction, and to perceive words of understanding;
He mea ia e ike ai i ka noiau a me ke aoia mai, E hoomaopopo i na olelo e naauao ai;
3 to receive also hard saying, and to understand true justice, and [how] to direct judgment;
E loaa'i ka ike e akamai ai, Ma ka pono a me ka hoopono, a me ka pololei;
4 that he might give subtlety to the simple, and to the young man discernment and understanding.
E haawi i ka maalea i ka poe naaupo, A me ka ike, a me ka noonoo i ke kanaka ui.
5 For by the hearing of these a wise man will be wiser, and man of understanding will gain direction;
E hoolohe ka mea naauao, a mahuahua ka ike, E loaa no i ka mea i aoia'i ka ike o naauao ai;
6 and will understand a parable, and a dark speech; the saying of the wise also, and riddles.
E ike i ka olelo akamai a me ka hoakaka ana o ia mea, I na olelo a ka poe naauao, a me ka lakou olelo pohihi.
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and [there is] good understanding to all that practise it: and piety toward God is the beginning of discernment; but the ungodly will set at nothing wisdom and instruction.
O ka makau ia Iehova, oia ka hoomaka ana o ka ike; A o ka naauao. a me ke aoia mai, ua hoowahawahaia e ka poe lapuwale.
8 Hear, [my] son, the instruction of your father, and reject not the rules of your mother.
E kuu keiki, e hooloke mai i ke ao ana a kou makuakane, Aole hoi e haalele i ke kanawai o kou maku wahine;
9 For you shall receive for your head a crown of graces, and a chain of gold round your neck.
No ka mea, he mea nani ia no kou poo, He mau lei hoi no kou a-i.
10 [My] son, let not ungodly men lead you astray, neither consent you [to them].
E kuu keiki, ina e hoowale wale mai ka poe hewa ia oe, Mai ae aku oe.
11 If they should exhort you, saying, Come with us, partake in blood, and let us unjustly hide the just man in the earth:
Ina lakou e olelo mai, E, e hele pu kakou, E hoohalua no ke koko, E hoohalua wale i ka mea hala ole;
12 and let us swallow him alive, as Hades [would], and remove the memorial of him from the earth: (Sheol )
E moni ola ia lakou me he malu make, E moni okoa hoi e like me ka poe e haule ana i ka lua: (Sheol )
13 let us seize on his valuable property, and let us fill our houses with spoils:
E loaa ia kakou ka waiwai maikai he nui, E hoopiha i ko kakou mau hale me ka waiwai pio;
14 but do you cast in your lot with us, and let us all provide a common purse, and let us have one pouch:
E hailona pu oe me makou i kou kuleana, I hookahi hipuu na kakou a pau:
15 go not in the way with them, but turn aside your foot from their paths:
E kuu kiekie e, mai hele pu oe mo lakou ma ke ala; E haalele kou wawae i ko lakou mau kuamoo;
16 [For their feet run to do evil, and are swift to shed blood. ]
No ka mea, holo kiki ko lakou wawae i ka hewa, Wikiwiki hoi lakou i ka hookahe koko.
17 for nets are not without cause spread for birds.
Make hewa no ke kau ana i ka hei, Ma ke alo o na mea eheu a pau.
18 For they that are concerned in murder store up evils for themselves; and the overthrow of transgressors is evil.
Moe malu lakou no ko lakou koko; Makaala hoi no na uhane o lakou.
19 These are the ways of all that perform lawless deeds; for by ungodliness they destroy their own life.
Pela ka aoao o ka poe makee waiwai a pau, E kaili ana i ke ola o ka mea nona ia.
20 Wisdom sings aloud in passages, and in the broad places speaks boldly.
Hea ae la ka naauao mawaho; Pane mai kona leo ma ke alanui;
21 And she makes proclamation on the top of the walls, and sits by the gates of princes; and at the gates of the city boldly says,
Ma ka welau o na ala oia e kahea mai ai: Ma na kahua o na puka kulanakauhale kana olelo ana, I mai la,
22 So long as the simple cleave to justice, they shall not be ashamed: but the foolish being lovers of haughtiness, having become ungodly have hated knowledge, and are become subject to reproofs.
Pehea ka loihi, e ka poe ike ole, E makemake ai oukou i ka naaupo? A oukou hoi, e ka poe hoowahawaha, E makemake ai i ka hoowahawaha ana? A o oukou, e ka poe naaupo, e inaina aku ai i ka naauao?
23 Behold, I will bring forth to you the utterance of my breath, and I will instruct you in my speech.
E huli mai oukou i ka'u ao ana; Aia hoi e niuini aku au i ko'u Uhane maluna o oukou. E hoike aku hoi ia oukou i ka'u mau olelo.
24 Since I called, and you did not listen; and I spoke at length, and you gave no heed;
I ko'u wa i hea aku ai, hoole mai oukou; Kikoo aku la au i ko'u lima, aohe mea i manao mai;
25 but you set at nothing my counsels, and disregarded my reproofs;
Haalele oukou i ko'u mau manao a pau, Aole hoi oukou i makemake i ka'u ao ana:
26 therefore I also will laugh at your destruction; and I will rejoice against [you] when ruin comes upon you:
Nolaila, i ko oukou popilikia e akaaka au, E hoowahawaha au i ka hiki ana o ko oukou makau;
27 yes when dismay suddenly comes upon you, and [your] overthrow shall arrive like a tempest; and when tribulation and distress shall come upon you, or when ruin shall come upon you.
A hiki mai ko oukou makau me he mea ino la, A hookokoke mai ko oukou popilikia me he puahiohio la, A loohia oukou e ka pilihua a me ke kaumaha:
28 For it shall be that when you call upon me, I will not listen to you: wicked men shall seek me, but shall not find [me].
Alaila, e hea mai lakou ia'u, aole au e pane aku; E imi koke lakou ia'u aole e loaa mai;
29 For they hated wisdom, and did not choose the word of the Lord:
No ka mea, hoowahawaha lakou i ka ike, A o ka makau ia Iehova, aole lakou i koho mai;
30 neither would they attend to my counsels, but derided my reproofs.
Aole o lakou makemake i ka'u ao ana; Manao ino hoi i ka'u mau olelo a pau.
31 Therefore shall they eat the fruits of their own way, and shall be filled with their own ungodliness.
Nolaila, e ai lakou i ka hua o ko lakou aoao iho, A ma ko ka manao ana o lakou e maona ai.
32 For because they wronged the simple, they shall be slain; and an inquisition shall ruin the ungodly.
No ka mea, o ka haalele ana aku o ka poe naaupo, oia ko lakou pepehiia mai, A o ka noho nanea ana o ka poe lapuwale, o ko lakou make ia.
33 But he that hearkens to me shall dwell in confidence, and shall rest securely from all evil.
Aka, o ka mea hoolohe mai ia'u. e noho oluolu no ia, E noho no ia me ka makau ole i ka poino.
