< Numbers 32 >

1 And the children of Ruben and the children of Gad had a multitude of cattle, very great; and they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Galaad; and the place was a place for cattle:
Nowe the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad had an exceeding great multitude of cattell: and they sawe the lande of Iazer, and the lande of Gilead, that it was an apt place for cattel.
2 and the children of Ruben and the children of Gad came, and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,
Then the children of Gad, and the childre of Reuben came, and spake vnto Moses and to Eleazar the Priest, and vnto the princes of the Congregation, saying,
3 Ataroth, and Daebon, and Jazer, and Namra, and Esebon, and Eleale, and Sebama, and Nabau, and Baean,
The land of Ataroth, and Dibon, and Iazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,
4 the land which the Lord has delivered up before the children of Israel, is pasture land, and your servants have cattle.
Which countrey the Lord smote before the Congregation of Israel, is a lande meete for cattell, and thy seruants haue cattell:
5 And they said, If we have found grace in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession, and do not cause us to pass over Jordan.
Wherefore, said they, if we haue foud grace in thy sight, let this lande be giuen vnto thy seruants for a possession, and bring vs not ouer Iorde.
6 And Moses said to the sons of Gad and the sons of Ruben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall you sit here?
And Moses said vnto the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren goe to warre, and ye tary heere?
7 And why do you pervert the minds of the children of Israel, that they should not cross over into the land, which the Lord gives them?
Wherefore now discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel, to goe ouer into the lande, which the Lord hath giuen them?
8 Did not your fathers thus, when I sent them from Cades Barne to spy out the land?
Thus did your fathers when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the lande.
9 And they went up to the valley of the cluster, and spied the land, and turned aside the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land, which the Lord gave them.
For when they went vp euen vnto the riuer of Eshcol, and sawe the land: they discouraged the heart of the childre of Israel, that they woulde not goe into the lande, which the Lord had giuen them.
10 And the Lord was very angry in that day, and sware, saying,
And the Lordes wrath was kindled the same day, and he did sweare, saying,
11 Surely these men who came up out of Egypt from twenty years old and upward, who know good and evil, shall not see the land which I sware [to give] to Abraam and Isaac and Jacob, for they have not closely followed after me:
None of the men that came out of Egypt from twentie yeere olde and aboue, shall see the land for the which I sware vnto Abraham, to Izhak, and to Iaakob, because they haue not wholly followed me:
12 save Caleb the son of Jephonne, who was set apart, and Joshua the son of Naue, for they closely followed after the Lord.
Except Caleb the sonne of Iephunneh the Kenesite, and Ioshua the sonne of Nun: for they haue constantly followed the Lord.
13 And the Lord was very angry with Israel; and for forty years he caused them to wander in the wilderness, until all the generation which did evil in the sight of the Lord was extinct.
And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and made them wander in the wildernesse fourty yeeres, vntill all the generation that had done euill in the sight of the Lord were consumed.
14 Behold, you are risen up in the room of your fathers, a combination of sinful men, to increase yet farther the fierce wrath of the Lord against Israel.
And behold, ye are risen vp in your fathers steade as an encrease of sinfull men, still to augment the fierce wrath of the Lord, toward Israel.
15 For you will turn away from him to desert him yet once more in the wilderness, and you will sin against this whole congregation.
For if ye turne away from following him, he will yet againe leaue the people in the wildernesse, and ye shall destroy all this folke.
16 And they came to him, and said, We will build here folds for our cattle, and cities for our possessions;
And they went neere to him, and said, We will builde sheepe foldes here for our sheepe, and for our cattell, and cities for our children.
17 and we will arm ourselves and go as an advanced guard before the children of Israel, until we shall have brought them into their place; and our possessions shall remain in walled cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
But we our selues will be readie armed to go before the children of Israel, vntill we haue brought them vnto their place: but our childre shall dwell in the defenced cities, because of the inhabitants of the lande.
18 We will not return to our houses till the children of Israel shall have been distributed, each to his own inheritance.
We will not returne vnto our houses, vntil the children of Israel haue inherited, euery man his inheritance.
19 And we will not any longer inherit with them from the other side of Jordan and onwards, because we have our full inheritance on the side beyond Jordan eastward.
Neither wil we inherite with them beyond Iorden and on that side, because our inheritance is fallen to vs on this side Iorden Eastwarde.
20 And Moses said to them, If you will do according to these words, if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for battle,
And Moses saide vnto them, If ye will doe this thing, and goe armed before the Lord to warre:
21 and every one of you will pass over Jordan fully armed before the Lord, until his enemy be destroyed from before his face,
And will goe euery one of you in harnesse ouer Iorden before the Lord, vntill he hath cast out his enemies from his sight:
22 and the land shall be subdued before the Lord, then afterwards you shall return, and be guiltless before the Lord, and as regards Israel; and this land shall be to you for a possession before the Lord.
And vntill the land be subdued before the Lord, then ye shall returne and be innocent toward the Lord, and toward Israel: and this land shalbe your possession before the Lord.
23 But if you will not do so, you will sin against the Lord; and you shall know your sin, when afflictions shall come upon you.
But if ye will not doe so, beholde, ye haue sinned against the Lord, and be sure, that your sinne will finde you out.
24 And you shall build for yourselves cities for your store, and folds for your cattle; and you shall do that which proceeds out of your mouth.
Builde you then cities for your children and folds for your sheepe, and do that ye haue spoke.
25 And the sons of Ruben and the sons of Gad spoke to Moses, saying, Your servants will do as our lord commands.
Then the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake vnto Moses, saying, Thy seruats will doe as my lorde commandeth:
26 Our store, and our wives, and all our cattle shall be in the cities of Galaad.
Our childre, our wiues, our sheepe, and al our cattell shall remaine there in the cities of Gilead,
27 But your servants will go over all armed and set in order before the Lord to battle, as [our] lord says.
But thy seruants will goe euery one armed to warre before the Lord for to fight, as my lorde saith.
28 And Moses appointed to them [for judges] Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Naue, and the chiefs of the families of the tribes of Israel.
So concerning them, Moses commanded Eleazar the Priest, and Ioshua the sonne of Nun, and the chiefe fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:
29 And Moses said to them, If the sons of Ruben and the sons of Gad will pass over Jordan with you, every one armed for war before the Lord, and you shall subdue the land before you, then you shall give to them the land of Galaad for a possession.
And Moses said vnto them, If the children of Gad, and the children of Reuben, will go with you ouer Iorden, all armed to fight before the Lord, then when the land is subdued before you, ye shall giue the the lad of Gilead for a possessio:
30 But if they will not pass over armed with you to war before the Lord, then shall you cause to pass over their possessions and their wives and their cattle before you into the land of Chanaan, and they shall inherit with you in the land of Chanaan.
But if they will not goe ouer with you armed, then they shall haue their possessions amog you in the land of Canaan.
31 And the sons of Ruben and the sons of Gad answered, saying, Whatsoever the Lord says to his servants, that will we do.
And the children of Gad, and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the Lord hath said vnto thy seruants, so will we doe.
32 We will go over armed before the Lord into the land of Chanaan, and you shall give us our inheritance beyond Jordan.
We will goe armed before the Lord into the lande of Canaan: that the possession of our inheritance may be to vs on this side Iorden.
33 And Moses gave to them, even to the sons of Gad and the sons of Ruben, and to the half tribe of Manasse of the sons of Joseph, the kingdom of Seon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Basan, the land and its cities with its coasts, the cities of the land round about.
So Moses gaue vnto them, euen to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and to halfe the tribe of Manasseh the sonne of Ioseph, the kingdome of Sihon King of the Amorites, and the kingdome of Og King of Bashan, the lande with the cities thereof and coastes, euen the cities of the countrey round about.
34 And the sons of Gad built Daebon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
Then the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
35 and Sophar, and Jazer, and they set them up,
And Atroth, Shophan, and Iazer, and Iogbehah,
36 and Namram, and Baetharan, strong cities, and folds for sheep.
And Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran, defenced cities: also sheepe foldes.
37 And the sons of Ruben built Esebon, and Eleale, and Kariatham,
And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,
38 and Beelmeon, surrounded [with walls], and Sebama; and they called the names of the cities which they built, after their own names.
And Nebo, and Baal-meon, and turned their names, and Shibmah: and gaue other names vnto the cities which they built.
39 And a son of Machir the son of Manasse went to Galaad, and took it, and destroyed the Amorite who lived in it.
And the children of Machir the sonne of Manasseh went to Gilead, and tooke it, and put out the Amorites that dwelt therein.
40 And Moses gave Galaad to Machir the son of Manasse, and he lived there.
Then Moses gaue Gilead vnto Machir the sonne of Manasseh, and he dwelt therein.
41 And Jair the [son] of Manasse went and took their villages, and called them the villages of Jair.
And Iair the sonne of Manasseh went and tooke the small townes thereof, and called them Hauoth Iair.
42 And Nabau went and took Caath and her villages, and called them Naboth after his name.
Also Nobah went and tooke Kenath, with the villages thereof and called it Nobah, after his owne name.
