Joshua 17
1 And the borders of the tribe of the children of Manasse, (for he [was] the firstborn of Joseph, ) [assigned] to Machir the firstborn of Manasse the father of Galaad, for he was a warrior, [were] in the land of Galaad and of Basan.
Le lot attribué à la tribu de Manassé, parce qu’il était le premier-né de Joseph, échut à Makhir, premier-né de Manassé, père de Ghilead; et, comme il était belliqueux, il eut le Galaad et le Basan.
2 And there was [land] assigned to the other sons of Manasse according to their families; to the sons of Jezi, and to the sons of Kelez, and to the sons of Jeziel, and to the sons of Sychem, and to the sons of Symarim, and to the sons of Opher: these [are] the males according to their families.
Les autres descendants de Manassé reçurent selon leurs familles, savoir: les fils d’Abiézer, ceux de Hêlek, ceux d’Asriel, ceux de Sichem, ceux de Héfer et ceux de Chemida, formant la descendance mâle de Manassé, fils de Joseph, selon leurs familles.
3 And Salpaad the sons of Opher had no sons but daughters: and these [are] the names of the daughters of Salpaad; Maala, and Nua, and Egla, and Melcha, and Thersa.
Mais Celofhad, fils de Héfer, fils de Ghilead, fils de Makhir, fils de Manassé, n’avait pas de fils, rien que des filles, lesquelles se nommaient: Mahla, Noa, Hogla, Milca et Tirça.
4 And they stood before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua, and before the rulers, saying, God gave a charge by the hand of Moses, to give us an inheritance in the midst of our brethren: so there was given to them by the command of the Lord an inheritance among the brethren of their father.
Elles se présentèrent devant le pontife Eléazar, devant Josué, fils de Noun, et les phylarques, en disant: "L’Eternel a ordonné à Moïse de nous attribuer un patrimoine parmi nos frères." Et on leur attribua, selon la parole de l’Eternel, un patrimoine parmi les frères de leur père.
5 And their lot fell [to them] from Anassa, and [to the] plain of Labec of the land of Galaad, which is beyond Jordan.
A Manassé échurent donc dix parts, outre le pays de Galaad et le Basan, situés au delà du Jourdain;
6 For the daughters of the sons of Manasse inherited a portion in the midst of their brethren, and the land of Galaad was assigned to the remainder of the sons of Manasse.
car les descendantes de Manassé obtinrent une propriété parmi ses descendants, tandis que le pays de Galaad appartint aux autres descendants de Manassé.
7 And the borders of the sons of Manasse were Delanath, which is before the sons of Anath, and it proceeds to the borders [even] to Jamin and Jassib to the fountain of Thaphthoth.
Or, la limite de Manassé était, en partant d’Aser: Mikhmetat, situé devant Sichem: de là elle s’étendait à droite vers les habitants d’En-Tappouah
8 It shall belong to Manasse, and Thapheth on the borders of Manasse [shall belong] to the sons of Ephraim.
(Manassé possédait le canton de Tappouah, mais Tappouah même, à la frontière de Manassé, était aux enfants d’Ephraïm).
9 And the borders shall go down to the valley of Carana southward by the valley of Jariel, ([there is] a turpentine tree [belonging] to Ephraim between [that and] the city of Manasse: ) and the borders of Manasse [are] northward to the brook; and the sea shall be its termination.
La limite descendait jusqu’au midi du torrent de Kana: les villes de ce côté, enclavées parmi celles de Manassé, appartenaient à Ephraïm, tandis que la limite de Manassé était au nord du torrent et se terminait à la mer.
10 Southward [the land belongs] to Ephraim, and northward to Manasse; and the sea shall be their cost; and northward they shall border upon Aseb, and eastward upon Issachar.
A Ephraïm ce qui était au sud, à Manassé ce qui était au nord, avec la mer pour limite; ils touchaient Aser au nord, Issachar à l’orient.
11 And Manasses shall have in [the portion of] Issachar and Aser Baethsan and their villages, and the inhabitants of Dor, and its villages, and the inhabitants of Mageddo, and its villages, and the third part of Mapheta, and its villages.
Manassé eut encore, dans les cantons d’Issachar et d’Aser, Bethcheân avec ses bourgades, Yibleam avec les siennes, les habitants de Dor et de En-Dor avec leurs dépendances, ceux de Taanakh et de Meghiddo avec les leurs, trois provinces.
12 And the sons of Manasse were not able to destroy these cities; and the Chananite began to dwell in that land.
Toutefois, les enfants de Manassé ne purent déposséder la population de ces villes, les Cananéens étant résolus à demeurer dans ce pays.
13 And it came to pass that when the children of Israel were strong, they made the Chananites subject, but they did not utterly destroy them.
Devenus plus forts, les Israélites soumirent les Cananéens à un tribut, mais ne les expulsèrent point.
14 And the sons of Joseph answered Joshua, saying, Therefore have you caused us to inherit one inheritance, and one line? whereas I am a great people, and God has blessed me.
Les descendants de Joseph se plaignirent en ces termes à Josué: "Pourquoi nous as-tu donné pour héritage un seul lot et un seul district, alors que nous formons une population nombreuse, tellement l’Eternel nous a bénis?"
15 And Joshua said to them, If you be a great people, go up to the forest, and clear [the land] for yourself, If mount Ephraim be too little for you.
Josué leur répondit: "Si vous êtes tellement nombreux, montez dans la région boisée, et ouvrez-vous y un passage au pays des Phérézéens et des Rephaïm, puisque la chaîne d’Ephraïm est trop étroite pour vous."
16 And they said, The mount of Ephraim does not please us, and the Chananite dwelling in it in Baethsan, and in its villages, [and] in the valley of Jezrael, has choice cavalry and iron.
"En effet, reprirent les descendants de Joseph, la montagne ne nous suffit point, et, d’autre part, tous les Cananéens de la plaine ont des chariots de fer, ainsi que ceux de Bethcheân et de ses dépendances, et ceux de la vallée de Jézreél."
17 And Joshua said to the sons of Joseph, If you are a great people, and have great strength, you shall not have [only] one inheritance.
Mais Josué dit à la famille de Joseph, aux tribus d’Ephraïm et de Manassé: "Vous êtes un peuple nombreux, vous êtes pleins d’énergie, vous ne sauriez avoir un lot unique.
18 For you shall have the wood, for there is a wood, and you shall clear it, and [the land] shall be your; even when you shall have utterly destroyed the Chananite, for he has chosen cavalry; yet you are stronger than he.
La montagne doit être à vous! Ce n’est que bois, mais vous la déboiserez, et vous en posséderez jusqu’aux points extrêmes; car vous en chasserez le Cananéen, malgré ses chariots de fer, malgré sa puissance!"
