Job 31
1 I made a covenant with mine eyes, and I will not think upon a virgin.
« J'ai fait un pacte avec mes yeux; comment dois-je alors regarder avec convoitise une jeune femme?
2 Now what portion has God given from above? and is there an inheritance [given] of the Mighty One from the highest?
Car quelle est la part du Dieu d'en haut, et l'héritage du Tout-Puissant en haut?
3 Alas! destruction to the unrighteous, and rejection to them that do iniquity.
N'est-ce pas une calamité pour les injustes, et le désastre pour les ouvriers de l'iniquité?
4 Will he not see my way, and number all my steps?
Ne voit-il pas mes manières, et compter tous mes pas?
5 But if I had gone with scorners, and if too my foot has hasted to deceit:
« Si j'ai marché dans le mensonge, et mon pied s'est précipité vers la tromperie
6 (for I am weighed in a just balance, and the Lord knows my innocence: )
(que je sois pesé dans une balance égale, afin que Dieu connaisse mon intégrité);
7 if my foot has turned aside out of the way, or if mine heart has followed mine eye, and if too I have touched gifts with my hands;
si mon pas s'est détourné du chemin, si mon cœur marchait après mes yeux, si une souillure s'est collée à mes mains,
8 then let me sow, and let others eat; and let me be uprooted on the earth.
Alors, que je sème, et qu'un autre mange. Oui, que le produit de mon champ soit arraché.
9 If my heart has gone forth after another man's wife, and if I laid wait at her doors;
« Si mon cœur a été séduit par une femme, et j'ai attendu à la porte de mon voisin,
10 then let my wife also please another, and let my children be brought low.
puis laisser ma femme moudre pour un autre, et laisser les autres dormir avec elle.
11 For the rage of anger is not to be controlled, [in the case] of defiling [another] man's wife.
Car ce serait un crime odieux. Oui, ce serait une iniquité d'être puni par les juges,
12 For it is a fire burning on every side, and whoever it attacks, it utterly destroys.
car c'est un feu qui consume jusqu'à la destruction, et déracinerait toute mon augmentation.
13 And if too I despised the judgment of my servant or [my] handmaid, when they pleaded with me;
« Si j'ai méprisé la cause de mon serviteur masculin ou de ma servante, quand ils se sont disputés avec moi,
14 what then shall I do if the Lord should try me? and if also he should at all visit me, can I make an answer?
Que ferai-je donc quand Dieu se lèvera? Quand il me rendra visite, que lui répondrai-je?
15 Were not they too formed as I also was formed in the womb? yes, we were formed in the same womb.
N'est-ce pas celui qui m'a fait dans le ventre de ma mère qui l'a fait? On ne nous a pas façonnés dans le ventre de notre mère?
16 But the helpless missed not whatever need they had, and I did not cause the eye of the widow to fail.
« Si j'ai privé les pauvres de leur désir, ou ont fait perdre les yeux de la veuve,
17 And if too I ate my morsel alone, and did not impart [of it] to the orphan;
ou avoir mangé mon morceau seul, et l'orphelin n'en a pas mangé
18 (for I nourished [them] as a father from my youth and guided [them] from my mother's womb.)
(non, dès ma jeunesse, il a grandi avec moi comme avec un père, Je l'ai guidée depuis le ventre de ma mère);
19 And if too I overlooked the naked as he was perishing, and did not clothe him;
si j'ai vu quelqu'un périr faute de vêtements, ou que les nécessiteux n'avaient pas de couverture;
20 and if the poor did not bless me, and their shoulders were [not] warmed with the fleece of my lambs;
si son cœur ne m'a pas béni, s'il n'a pas été réchauffé avec la toison de mon mouton;
21 if I lifted my hand against an orphan, trusting that my strength was far superior [to his]:
si j'ai levé la main sur l'orphelin, parce que j'ai vu mon aide dans le portail;
22 let them my shoulder start from the blade-bone, and my arm be crushed off from the elbow.
puis j'ai laissé tomber mon épaule à partir de l'omoplate, et que mon bras soit brisé jusqu'à l'os.
23 For the fear of the Lord constrained me, and I can’t bear up by reason of his burden.
Car la calamité de Dieu est pour moi une terreur. A cause de sa majesté, je ne peux rien faire.
24 If I made gold my treasure, and if too I trusted the precious stone;
« Si j'ai fait de l'or mon espoir, et ont dit à l'or fin: « Tu es ma confiance ».
25 and if too I rejoiced when my wealth was abundant, and if too I laid my hand on innumerable [treasures]:
Si je me suis réjoui parce que ma richesse était grande, et parce que ma main était devenue beaucoup;
26 (do we not see the shining sun eclipsed, and the moon waning? for they have not [power to continue]: )
si j'ai vu le soleil quand il brillait, ou la lune qui se déplace dans la splendeur,
27 and if my heart was secretly deceived, and if I have laid my hand upon my mouth and kissed it:
et mon cœur a été secrètement séduit, et ma main a jeté un baiser de ma bouche;
28 let this also then be reckoned to me as the greatest iniquity: for I [should] have lied against the Lord Most High.
ce serait aussi une iniquité à punir par les juges, car j'aurais renié le Dieu qui est là-haut.
29 And if too I was glad at the fall of mine enemies, and mine heart said, Aha!
« Si je me suis réjoui de la destruction de celui qui me haïssait, ou soulevé moi-même quand le mal l'a trouvé
30 let then mine ear hear my curse, and let me be a byword among my people in my affliction.
(Je n'ai certes pas permis à ma bouche de pécher en demandant sa vie avec une malédiction);
31 And if too my handmaids have often said, Oh that we might be satisfied with his flesh; (whereas I was very kind:
si les hommes de ma tente n'ont pas dit, Qui peut trouver quelqu'un qui n'a pas été rassasié de sa viande?
32 for the stranger did not lodge without, and my door was opened to every one that came: )
(l'étranger n'a pas campé dans la rue, mais j'ai ouvert mes portes au voyageur);
33 or if too having sinned unintentionally, I hid my sin;
si, comme Adam, j'ai couvert mes transgressions, en cachant mon iniquité dans mon cœur,
34 (for I did not stand in awe of a great multitude, so as not to declare boldly before them: ) and if too I permitted a poor man to go out of my door with an empty bosom:
car je craignais la grande foule, et le mépris des familles me terrifiait, alors j'ai gardé le silence, et je n'ai pas franchi la porte...
35 (Oh that I had a hearer, ) and if I had not feared the hand of the Lord; and [as to] the written charge which I had against any one,
oh que j'en ai un pour m'entendre! Voici ma signature! Que le Tout-Puissant me réponde! Laissez l'accusateur écrire mon acte d'accusation!
36 I would place [it] as a chaplet on my shoulders, and read it.
Je la porterais sûrement sur mon épaule, et je l'attacherais à moi comme une couronne.
37 And if I did not read it and return it, having taken nothing from the debtor:
Je lui déclarais le nombre de mes pas. Je m'approcherais de lui comme un prince.
38 If at any time the land groaned against me, and if its furrows mourned together;
Si mon pays crie contre moi, et ses sillons pleurent ensemble;
39 and if I ate its strength alone without price, and if I too grieved the heart of the owner of the soil, by taking [anything] from [him]:
si j'ai mangé ses fruits sans argent, ou ont causé la mort de leurs propriétaires,
40 then let the nettle come up to me instead of wheat, and a bramble instead of barley. And Job ceased speaking.
laisser pousser des roncesà la place du blé, et du tabouret des champs à la place de l'orge. » Les paroles de Job sont terminées.
