Jeremias 6
1 Strengthen yourselves, you children of Benjamin, [to flee] out of the midst of Jerusalem, and sound an alarm with the trumpet in Thecue, and set up a signal over Baethacharma: for evil threatens from the north, and a great destruction is coming.
Fuyez, enfants de Benjamin, du milieu de Jérusalem, et en Thécoa sonnez de la trompette, et à Beth-Carem élevez des signaux! Car un malheur nous menace du nord, et un grand désastre.
2 And [your] pride, O daughter of Sion, shall be taken away.
Belle et délicate fille de Sion, je vais te détruire!
3 The shepherds and their flocks shall come to her; and they shall pitch [their] tents against her round about, and shall feed [their flocks] each with his hand.
Sur elle marchent les bergers et leurs troupeaux; ils planteront leurs tentes tout à l'entour, brouteront chacun leur quartier.
4 Prepare yourselves for war against her; rise up, and let us go up against her at noon. Woe to us! for the day has gone down, for the shadows of the day fail.
« Inaugurez son assaut! Debout! attaquons en plein jour! quel contre-temps pour nous! car le jour baisse, et déjà les ombres du soir s'allongent.
5 Rise, and let us go up against her by night, and destroy her foundations.
Allons! escaladons de nuit, et détruisons ses palais! »
6 For thus says the Lord, Hew down her trees, array a numerous force against Jerusalem. O false city; [there is] all oppression in her.
Car ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées: Coupez le bois, et contre Jérusalem élevez les terrasses; c'est la ville à punir; elle est tout injustice en son cœur.
7 As a cistern cools water, so her wickedness cools her, ungodliness and misery shall be heard in her, [as] continually before her.
Comme une fontaine fait jaillir les eaux, ainsi fait-elle jaillir le mal; j'y entends incessamment la violence et la ruine, la douleur et les coups.
8 You shall be chastened, O Jerusalem, with pain and the scourge, lest my soul depart from you; lest I make you a desert land, which shall not be inhabited.
Amende-toi, Jérusalem, pour que mon âme ne se détache pas de toi, que je ne te rende pas un désert, un pays inhabité!
9 For thus says the Lord, Glean, glean thoroughly as a vine the remnant of Israel: turn back [your hands] as a grape-gatherer to his basket.
Ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées: On grappillera comme une vigne les restes d'Israël. Mets et remets la main comme le vendangeur à sa corbeille!
10 To whom shall I speak, and testify, that he may listen? behold, your ears are uncircumcised, and they shall not be able to hear: behold, the word of the Lord is become to them a reproach, they will not at all desire it.
A qui parlerai-je, et qui sommerai-je pour qu'on écoute? Voici, leur oreille est incirconcise, et ils ne sauraient entendre. Voici, la parole de l'Éternel a été pour eux une dérision, ils n'ont aucun goût pour elle.
11 And I allowed my wrath to come to full, yet I kept [it] in, and did not utterly destroy them: I will pour it out on the children without, and on the assembly of young men together: for man and woman shall be taken together, the old man with him that is full of days.
Mais la colère de l'Éternel me pénètre, je suis las de la contenir. Verse-la sur l'enfant dans la rue et sur le cercle des jeunes gens à la fois; car et l'homme et la femme seront pris, le vieillard et l'homme comblé de jours.
12 And their houses shall be turned to others, [with] their fields and their wives together: for I will stretch out my hand upon the inhabitants of this land, says the Lord.
Leurs maisons seront dévolues à d'autres, et leurs champs et leurs femmes aussi;
13 For from the least of them even to the greatest they have all committed iniquity; from the priest even to the false prophet they have all wrought falsely.
car j'étendrai ma main sur les habitants du pays, dit l'Éternel; car du petit au grand tous sont avides de gain; et du prophète au sacrificateur tous usent de fraudes;
14 And they healed the breach of my people [imperfectly], making light [of it], and saying, Peace, peace, and where is peace?
et ils traitent la plaie de mon peuple comme chose légère, disant: « Salut! salut! » tandis qu'il n'y a point de salut.
15 They were ashamed because they failed; yet they were not ashamed as those who are [truly] ashamed, and they knew not their own disgrace: therefore shall they [utterly] fall when they do fall, and in the time of visitation shall they perish, said the Lord.
Ils seront dans l'opprobre, car ils commettent l'abomination; mais ils ne rougissent pas, et ne connaissent pas la honte. Aussi tomberont-ils avec ceux qui tombent, et au jour de mes châtiments ils seront renversés, dit l'Éternel.
16 Thus says the Lord, Stand you in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths of the Lord; and see what is the good way, and walk in it, and you shall find purification for your souls. But they said, We will not walk [in them].
Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Tenez-vous sur les routes, et regardez, et demandez quels sont les chemins d'autrefois, quelle est la bonne voie, et marchez-y, et vous trouverez du repos pour votre âme!
17 I have set watchmen over you, [saying], Hear you the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hear [it].
Mais ils disent: « Nous n'y marcherons point. » Et j'ai mis près de vous des sentinelles [pour vous dire]: Soyez attentifs au son de la trompette! Mais ils disent: « Nous n'y serons point attentifs. »
18 Therefore have the nations heard, and they that feed their flocks.
Aussi, écoutez, nations, apprenez, assemblée des peuples, ce qui en est d'eux.
19 Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evils upon this people, [even] the fruit of their rebellions; for they have not heeded my words, and they have rejected my law.
Terre, entends-le! voici, je ferai arriver sur ce peuple les maux, fruits de ses pensées, car ils ne sont point attentifs à mes paroles, et ils méprisent ma loi.
20 Therefore do you bring me frankincense from Saba, and cinnamon from a land afar off? your whole burnt offerings are not acceptable, and your sacrifices have not been pleasant to me.
Que me fait cet encens venu de Séba, et ce roseau odorant apporté d'un pays lointain? Vos holocaustes ne me plaisent point, et vos sacrifices ne me sont point agréables.
21 Therefore thus says the Lord, Behold, I [will] bring weakness upon this people, and the fathers and sons shall be weak together; the neighbor and his friend shall perish.
Aussi, ainsi parle l'Éternel: Voici, je mettrai devant ce peuple des achoppements qui feront tomber à la fois les pères et les fils, le voisin et son ami, et ils périront.
22 Thus says the Lord, Behold, a people comes from the north, and nations shall be stirred up from the end of the earth.
Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Voici venir un peuple de la région du Nord, et une grande nation se lève de l'extrémité de la terre;
23 They shall lay hold on bow and spear; [the people] is fierce, and will have no mercy; their voice is as the roaring sea; they shall array themselves for war against you as fire on horses and chariots, O daughter of Sion.
ils manient l'arc et le javelot; ils sont cruels et sans pitié; leur voix, comme la mer, gronde, et sur des chevaux ils sont montés, rangés comme un seul homme en bataille contre toi, fille de Sion.
24 We have heard the report of them: our hands are weakened: anguish has seized us, the pangs as of a woman in travail.
Nous en entendons la rumeur, nos mains défaillent, l'anxiété nous saisit, l'angoisse de l'enfantement.
25 Go not forth into the field, and walk not in the ways; for the sword of the enemy lingers round about.
Ne sors point dans les champs, et ne va pas sur les chemins, car l'épée de l'ennemi, la terreur est partout!
26 O daughter of my people, gird yourself with sackcloth: sprinkle [yourself] with ashes; make for yourself pitiable lamentation, [as] the mourning for a beloved [son]: for misery will come suddenly upon you.
Fille de mon peuple, ceins le cilice, et roule-toi dans la poussière, prends le deuil comme pour un fils unique, gémis amèrement! car soudain sur nous viendra la destruction.
27 I have caused you to be tried among tried nations, and you shall know me when I have tried their way.
Je t'avais établi sentinelle de mon peuple dans une vedette, pour voir et examiner leurs voies.
28 [They are] all disobedient, walking perversely: [they are] brass and iron; they are all corrupted.
Tous ils sont rebelles et réfractaires, calomniateurs, de l'airain et du fer; tous ils sont dépravés.
29 The bellows have failed from the fire, the lead has failed: the silversmith works at his trade in vain; their wickedness is not consumed.
Le soufflet est brûlant, par le feu le plomb est consumé, vainement on épure, on épure, les méchants ne sont point séparés:
30 Call you them reprobate silver, because the Lord has rejected them.
on les appelle argent réprouvé, car l'Éternel les a réprouvés.
