Genesis 28
1 And Isaac having called for Jacob, blessed him, and charged him, saying, You shall not take a wife of the daughters of the Chananites.
C’est pourquoi Isaac appela Jacob, le bénit et lui commanda, disant; Ne prends pas une femme de la race de Chanaan:
2 Rise and depart quickly into Mesopotamia, to the house of Bathuel the father of your mother, and take to yourself thence a wife of the daughters of Laban your mother's brother.
Mais va, et pars pour la Mésopotamie de Syrie, dans la maison de Bathuel, père de ta mère, et prends de là une femme d’entre les filles de Laban ton oncle;
3 And may my God bless you, and increase you, and multiply you, and you shall become gatherings of nations.
Et que le Dieu tout-puissant te bénisse, qu’il te fasse croître et qu’il te multiplie, afin que tu sois le père d’un grand nombre de peuples;
4 And may he give you the blessing of my father Abraam, even to you and to your seed after you, to inherit the land of your sojourning, which God gave to Abraam.
Et qu’il te donne les bénédictions d’Abrabam, à toi et à ta postérité après toi, afin que tu possèdes la terre de ton pèlerinage qu’il a promise à ton aïeul.
5 So Isaac sent away Jacob, and he went into Mesopotamia to Laban the son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebecca the mother of Jacob and Esau.
Lorsqu’Isaac eut renvoyé Jacob, celui-ci étant parti, vint en Mésopotamie de Syrie, chez Laban, fils de Bathuel, Syrien, frère de Rébecca sa mère.
6 And Esau saw that Isaac blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Mesopotamia of Syria as he blessed him, to take to himself a wife thence, and [that] he charged him, saying, You shall not take a wife of the daughters of the Chananites;
Mais Esaü, voyant que son père avait béni Jacob, et qu’il l’avait envoyé en Mésopotamie de Syrie, pour en prendre une femme; et qu’après la bénédiction, il lui avait commandé, disant: Tu ne prendras point de femme d’entre les filles de Chanaan;
7 and [that] Jacob listened to his father and his mother, and went to Mesopotamia of Syria.
Et que Jacob, obéissant à ses parents, était allé en Syrie;
8 And Esau also having seen that the daughters of Chanaan were evil before his father Isaac,
Sachant aussi par expérience que son père ne voyait pas avec plaisir les filles de Chanaan,
9 Esau went to Ismael, and took Maeleth the daughter of Ismael, the son of Abraam, the sister of Nabeoth, a wife in addition to his [other] wives.
Il alla vers Ismaël, et prit pour femme, outre celles qu’il avait déjà, Mahéleth, fille d’Ismaël fils d’Abraham, sœur de Nabaïoth.
10 And Jacob went forth from the well of the oath, and departed into Charrhan.
Jacob donc, sorti de Bersabée, poursuivait son chemin vers Haran.
11 And came to a certain place and slept there, for the sun had gone down; and he took [one] of the stones of the place, and put it at his head, and lay down to sleep in that place,
Or, lorsqu’il fut venu en un certain lieu, et qu’il voulait s’y reposer, après le coucher du soleil, il prit une des pierres qui étaient là, et la mettant sous sa tête, il dormit en ce même lieu.
12 and dreamed, and behold a ladder fixed on the earth, whose top reached to heaven, and the angels of God ascended and descended on it.
Alors il vit en songe une échelle posée sur la terre, et dont le sommet touchait au ciel, les anges de Dieu aussi qui la montaient et la descendaient.
13 And the Lord stood upon it, and said, I am the God of your father Abraam, and the God of Isaac; fear not, the land on which you lie, to you will I give it, and to your seed.
Et le Seigneur appuyé sur l’échelle, lui disant: Je suis le Seigneur, le Dieu d’Abraham ton père et le Dieu d’Isaac; la terre sur laquelle tu dors, je te la donnerai, à toi et à ta postérité.
14 And your seed shall be as the sand of the earth; and it shall spread abroad to the sea, and the south, and the north, and to the east; and in you and in your seed shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed.
Et elle sera, ta postérité, comme la poussière de la terre, et tu t’étendras à l’occident et à l’orient, au septentrion et au midi; et seront bénies en toi et en ta postérité toutes les tribus de la terre.
15 And behold I am with you to preserve you continually in all the way wherein you shall go; and I will bring you back to this land; for I will not desert you, until I have done all that I have said to you.
Et je serai ton gardien partout où tu iras, et je te ramènerai dans ce pays, et je ne te quitterai point, que je n’aie accompli tout ce que j’ai dit.
16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and said, The Lord is in this place, and I knew it not.
Quand Jacob fut éveillé de son sommeil, il dit: Vraiment le Seigneur est en ce lieu, et moi je ne le savais pas.
17 And he was afraid, and said, How fearful is this place! this is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
Et, saisi d’effroi: Qu’il est terrible, dit-il, ce lieu-ci! Ce n’est autre chose que la maison de Dieu et la porte du ciel.
18 And Jacob rose up in the morning, and took the stone he [had] laid there by his head, and he set it up [as] a pillar, and poured oil on the top of it.
Se levant donc le matin, Jacob prit la pierre qu’il avait mise sous sa tête, et l’érigea en monument, répandant de l’huile dessus,
19 And he called the name of that place, the House of God; and the name of the city before was Ulam-luz.
Et il appela du nom de Béthel la ville qui auparavant s’appelait Luza.
20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If the Lord God will be with me, and guard me throughout on this journey, on which I am going, and give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
Il voua aussi un vœu, disant: Si le Seigneur Dieu est avec moi, s’il me garde dans le chemin par lequel je marche, et me donne du pain pour me nourrir et des vêtements pour me couvrir,
21 and bring me back in safety to the house of my father, then shall the Lord be for a God to me.
Et que je retourne heureusement à la maison de mon père, le Seigneur sera mon Dieu;
22 And this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be to me a house of God; and of all whatever you shall give me, I will tithe a tenth for you.
Et cette pierre, que j’ai érigée en monument, sera appelée Maison de Dieu; et de tout ce que vous m’aurez donné, Seigneur, je vous offrirai la dîme.
