< Genesis 11 >

1 And all the earth was one lip, and there was one language to all.
Now the earth was of one language and of the same speech.
2 And it came to pass as they moved from the east, they found a plain in the land of Senaar, and they lived there.
And when they were advancing from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt in it.
3 And a man said to his neighbor, Come, let us make bricks and bake them with fire. And the brick was to them for stone, and their mortar was bitumen.
And each one said to his neighbor, “Come, let us make bricks, and bake them with fire.” And they had bricks instead of stones, and pitch instead of mortar.
4 And they said, Come, let us build to ourselves a city and tower, whose top shall be to heaven, and let us make to ourselves a name, before we are scattered abroad upon the face of all the earth.
And they said: “Come, let us make a city and a tower, so that its height may reach to heaven. And let us make our name famous before we are divided into all the lands.”
5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of men built.
Then the Lord descended to see the city and the tower, which the sons of Adam were building.
6 And the Lord said, Behold, [there is] one race, and one lip of all, and they have begun to do this, and now nothing shall fail from them of all that they may have undertaken to do.
And he said: “Behold, the people are united, and all have one tongue. And since they have begun to do this, they will not desist from their plans, until they have completed their work.
7 Come, and having gone down let us there confound their tongue, that they may not understand each the voice of his neighbor.
Therefore, come, let us descend, and in that place confound their tongue, so that they may not listen, each one to the voice of his neighbor.”
8 And the Lord scattered them thence over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city and the tower.
And so the Lord divided them from that place into all the lands, and they ceased to build the city.
9 On this account its name was called Confusion, because there the Lord confounded the languages of all the earth, and thence the Lord scattered them upon the face of all the earth.
And for this reason, its name was called ‘Babel,’ because in that place the language of the whole earth became confused. And from then on, the Lord scattered them across the face of every region.
10 And these [are] the generations of Sem: and Sem was a hundred years old when he begot Arphaxad, the second year after the flood.
These are the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old when he conceived Arphaxad, two years after the great flood.
11 And Sem lived, after he had begotten Arphaxad, five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters, and died.
And after he conceived Arphaxad, Shem lived for five hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
12 And Arphaxad lived a hundred and thirty-five years, and begot Cainan.
Next, Arphaxad lived for thirty-five years, and then he conceived Shelah.
13 And Arphaxad lived after he had begotten Cainan, four hundred years, and begot sons and daughters, and died. And Cainan lived a hundred and thirty years and begot Sala; and Canaan lived after he had begotten Sala, three hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters, and died.
And after he conceived Shelah, Arphaxad lived for three hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
14 And Sala lived an hundred and thirty years, and begot Heber.
Likewise, Shelah lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Eber.
15 And Sala lived after he had begotten Heber, three hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters, and died.
And after he conceived Eber, Shelah lived for four hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
16 And Heber lived an hundred and thirty-four years, and begot Phaleg.
Then Eber lived for thirty-four years, and he conceived Peleg.
17 And Heber lived after he had begotten Phaleg two hundred and seventy years, and begot sons and daughters, and died.
And after he conceived Peleg, Eber lived for four hundred and thirty years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
18 And Phaleg lived and hundred and thirty years, and begot Ragau.
Likewise, Peleg lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Reu.
19 And Phaleg lived after he had begotten Ragau, two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters, and died.
And after he conceived Reu, Peleg lived for two hundred and nine years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
20 And Ragau lived and hundred thirty and two years, and begot Seruch.
Then Reu lived for thirty-two years, and then he conceived Serug.
21 And Raau lived after he had begotten Seruch, two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters, and died.
Likewise, after he conceived Serug, Reu lived for two hundred and seven years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
22 And Seruch lived a hundred and thirty years, and begot Nachor.
In truth, Serug lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Nahor.
23 And Seruch lived after he had begotten Nachor, two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters, and died.
And after he conceived Nahor, Serug lived for two hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
24 And Nachor lived a hundred and seventy-nine years, and begot Tharrha.
And so Nahor lived for twenty-nine years, and then he conceived Terah.
25 And Nachor lived after he had begotten Tharrha, an hundred and twenty-five years, and begot sons and daughters, and he died.
And after he conceived Terah, Nahor lived for one hundred and nineteen years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
26 And Tharrha lived seventy years, and begot Abram, and Nachor, and Arrhan.
And Terah lived for seventy years, and then he conceived Abram, and Nahor, and Haran.
27 And these [are] the generations of Tharrha. Tharrha begot Abram and Nachor, and Arrhan; and Arrhan begot Lot.
And these are the generations of Terah. Terah conceived Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Next Haran conceived Lot.
28 And Arrhan died in the presence of Tharrha his father, in the land in which he was born, in the country of the Chaldees.
And Haran died before his father Terah, in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
29 And Abram and Nachor took to themselves wives, the name of the wife of Abram was Sara, and the name of the wife of Nachor, Malcha, daughter of Arrhan, and he was the father of Malcha, the father of Jescha.
Then Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai. And the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.
30 And Sara was barren, and did not bear children.
But Sarai was barren and had no children.
31 And Tharrha took Abram his son, and Lot the son Arrhan, the son of his son, and Sara his daughter-in-law, the wife of Abram his son, and led them forth out of the land of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Chanaan, and they came as far as Charrhan, and he lived there.
And so Terah took his son Abram, and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and he led them away from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan. And they approached as far as Haran, and they dwelt there.
32 And all the days of Tharrha in the land of Charrhan were two hundred and five years, and Tharrha died in Charrhan.
And the days of Terah that passed were two hundred and five years, and then he died in Haran.
