Esther 9
1 For in the twelfth month, on the thirteenth day of the month which is Adar, the letters written by the king arrived.
En el duodécimo mes, que es el mes de Adar, el día trece del mismo, cuando había de ejecutarse la orden del rey y su edicto, y cuando los enemigos de los judíos creían obtener el dominio sobre ellos, sucedió todo lo contrario; pues los judíos prevalecieron contra quienes los odiaban.
2 In that day the adversaries of the Jews perished: for no one resisted, through fear of them.
Los judíos se reunieron en sus ciudades, por todas las provincias del rey Asuero, para echar mano de todos aquellos que buscaban perderlos; y ninguno pudo resistirles; pues el temor de ellos había caído sobre todos los pueblos.
3 For the chiefs of the satraps, and the princes and the royal scribes, honored the Jews; for the fear of Mardochaeus lay upon them.
Y todos los jefes de las provincias, los sátrapas y los gobernadores, y todos los dignatarios del rey, favorecían a los judíos; porque los había invadido el temor de Mardoqueo.
4 For the order of the king was in force, that he should be celebrated in all the kingdom.
Pues Mardoqueo era poderoso en la casa del rey, y su fama iba por todas las provincias, de suerte que este hombre, Mardoqueo, crecía cada día más en poder.
Los judíos hirieron a golpe de espada a todos sus enemigos, los mataron y los exterminaron y trataron a su gusto a los que los odiaban.
6 And in the city Susa the Jews killed five hundred men:
En Susa, la capital, los judíos mataron y exterminaron a quinientos hombres.
7 both Pharsannes, and Delphon and Phasga,
Mataron también a Parsandata, Dalfón, Aspata,
8 and Pharadatha, and Barea, and Sarbaca,
Porata, Adalia, Aridata,
9 and Marmasima, and Ruphaeus, and Arsaeus, and Zabuthaeus,
Parmasta, Arisai, Aridai, y Yezata,
10 the ten sons of Aman the son of Amadathes the Bugaean, the enemy of the Jews, and they plundered [their property] on the same day:
los diez hijos de Amán, hijo de Hamedata, adversario de los judíos; pero no alargaron su mano para despojarlos.
11 and the number of them that perished in Susa was rendered to the king.
Aquel mismo día llegó al conocimiento del rey el número de los muertos en Susa, la capital.
12 And the king said to Esther, The Jews have slain five hundred men in the city Susa; and how, think you, have they used them in the rest of the country? What then do you yet ask, that it may be [done] for you?
Y dijo el rey a la reina Ester: “En Susa, la capital, los judíos han matado y exterminado a quinientos hombres y a los diez hijos de Amán. ¿Qué habrán hecho en las demás provincias? ¿Cuál es ahora tu petición?, pues te será concedida. ¿Y qué más deseas?, pues será otorgado.”
13 And Esther said to the king, let it be granted to the Jews so to treat them tomorrow as to hand the ten sons of Aman.
Dijo Ester: “Si al rey le parece bien concédase a los judíos que están en Susa, hacer también mañana, según el decreto de hoy; y que los diez hijos de Amán sean colgados en la horca.”
14 And he permitted it to be so done; and he gave up to the Jews of the city the bodies of the sons of Aman to hang.
Mandó entonces el rey que se hiciera así; se dio un decreto en Susa y los diez hijos de Amán fueron colgados.
15 And the Jews assembled in Susa on the fourteenth [day] of Adar, and killed three hundred men, but plundered no property.
Se reunieron, pues, los judíos de Susa el catorce del mes de Adar y mataron en Susa a trescientos hombres; pero no se dieron al saqueo.
16 And the rest of the Jews who were in the kingdom assembled, and helped one another, and obtained rest from their enemies: for they destroyed fifteen thousand of them on the thirteenth [day] of Adar, but took no spoil.
Los otros judíos que estaban en las provincias del rey, se reunieron del mismo modo para defender su vida, y obtuvieron que sus enemigos los dejasen en paz. Mataron de sus enemigos a setenta y cinco mil: pero no se dieron al saqueo.
17 And they rested on the fourteenth of the same month, and kept it as a day of rest with joy and gladness.
Esto sucedió el día trece del mes de Adar. El día catorce del mismo mes descansaron, haciendo de él un día de banquete y de alegría.
18 And the Jews in the city Susa assembled also on the fourteenth [day] and rested; and they kept also the fifteenth with joy and gladness.
Solo los judíos de Susa se habían reunido el trece y el catorce del mes, y descansaron el quince del mismo, haciendo de él un día de banquete y de alegría.
19 On this account then [it is that] the Jews dispersed in every foreign land keep the fourteenth of Adar [as] a holy day with joy, sending portions each to his neighbor.
Por eso los judíos de la campaña, los que habitan en ciudades sin murallas, hacen del día catorce del mes de Adar día de regocijo y de banquete, día de fiesta en que se mandan regalos los unos a los otros.
20 And Mardochaeus wrote these things in a book, and sent them to the Jews, as many as were in the kingdom of Artaxerxes, both them that were near and them that were afar off,
Mardoqueo escribió estas cosas, y envió cartas a todos los judíos que había en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, cercanas y remotas,
21 to establish these [as] joyful days, and to keep the fourteenth and fifteenth of Adar;
obligándolos a celebrar todos los años el día catorce del mes de Adar, y el día quince del mismo
22 for on these days the Jews obtained rest from their enemies; and [as to] the month, which was Adar, in which a change was made for them, from mourning to joy, and from sorrow to a good day, to spend the whole of it [in] good days of feasting and gladness, sending portions to their friends, and to the poor.
—como días en que los judíos se deshicieron de sus enemigos, y como mes en que la tristeza se les trocó en regocijo, y el luto en día bueno— y hacer de ellos días de banquete y de regocijo, con el fin de mandarse regalos los unos a los otros y repartir dádivas a los pobres.
23 And the Jews consented [to this] accordingly as Mardochaeus wrote to them,
Los judíos adoptaron (como costumbre) lo que habían va comenzado a hacer, y lo que Mardoqueo les había escrito.
24 [showing] how Aman the son of Amadathes the Macedonian fought against them, how he made a decree and cast lots to destroy them utterly;
Porque Amán, hijo de Hamedata agagita, enemigo de todos los judíos, había tramado el proyecto de exterminar a los judíos, echando el “pur”, es decir, la suerte, para destruirlos y exterminarlos.
25 also how he went in to the king, telling [him] to hang Mardochaeus: but all the calamities he tried to bring upon the Jews came upon himself, and he was hanged, and his children.
Mas cuando (Ester) se presentó al rey, mandó este por escrito, que recayese sobre su misma cabeza el proyecto maligno que había tramado contra los judíos, y así le colgaron a él y a sus hijos en la horca.
26 Therefore these days were called Phrurae, because of the lots; (for in their language they are called Phrurae; ) because of the words of this letter, and [because of] all they suffered on this account, and all that happened to them.
Por esto llamaron a aquellos días Purim, del nombre de pur. Y por lo mismo, a raíz de todas las palabras de aquella carta, y por lo que ellos mismos habían visto y que les había acaecido,
27 And [Mardochaeus] established it, and the Jews took upon themselves, and upon their seed, and upon those that were joined to them [to observe it], neither would they on any account behave differently: but these days [were to be] a memorial kept in every generation, and city, and family, and province.
los judíos establecieron como obligación para sí, para sus descendientes y para los que se les agregasen, celebrar irrevocablemente estos dos días, conforme a lo prescrito y en el tiempo señalado, año tras año
28 And these days of the Phrurae, [said they, ]shall be kept for ever, and their memorial shall not fail in any generation.
y que estos días fuesen recordados y celebrados de generación en generación, en cada familia, en cada provincia y en cada ciudad; y que estos días de Purim no cayesen en desuso entre los judíos, ni se borrase su recuerdo entre sus descendientes.
29 And queen Esther, the daughter of Aminadab, and Mardochaeus the Jew, wrote all that they had done, and the confirmation of the letter of Phrurae.
Por esto la reina Ester, hija de Abihael, y Mardoqueo el judío escribieron con toda instancia, por segunda vez, para confirmar la carta sobre Purim.
Mandaron cartas a todos los judíos de las ciento veinte y siete provincias del rey Asuero, con palabras de paz y verdad,
31 And Mardochaeus and Esther the queen appointed [a fast] for themselves privately, even at that time also having formed their plan against their own health.
y recomendaron celebrar estos días de Purim en su tiempo determinado, como Mardoqueo judío y la reina Ester lo habían ordenado y como ellos mismos se habían obligado para sí y para sus descendientes en lo tocante a los ayunos y sus lamentaciones.
32 And Esther established it by a command for ever, and it was written for a memorial.
La orden de Ester confirmó estas observancias de Purim; y se escribió esto en el libro.
