Deuteronomy 1
1 These [are] the words which Moses spoke to all Israel on this side Jordan in the desert towards the west near the Red Sea, between Pharan Tophol, and Lobon, and Aulon, and the gold works.
Queste sono le parole che Mosè rivolse a tutto Israele oltre il Giordano, nel deserto, nella valle dell'Araba, di fronte a Suf, tra Paran, Tofel, Laban, Cazerot e Di-Zaab.
2 [It is] a journey of eleven days from Choreb to mount Seir as far as Cades Barne.
Vi sono undici giornate dall'Oreb, per la via del monte Seir, fino a Kades-Barnea.
3 And it came to pass in the forties year, in the eleventh month, on the first [day] of the month, Moses spoke to all the children of Israel, according to all things which the Lord commanded him for them:
Nel quarantesimo anno, l'undicesimo mese, il primo giorno del mese, Mosè parlò agli Israeliti, secondo quanto il Signore gli aveva ordinato di dir loro.
4 after he had struck Seon king of the Amorites who lived in Esebon, and Og the king of Basan who lived in Astaroth and in Edrain;
Dopo aver sconfitto Sicon, re degli Amorrei, che abitava in Chesbon, e Og, re di Basan, che abitava in Astarot e in Edrei,
5 beyond Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses began to declare this law, saying,
oltre il Giordano, nel paese di Moab, Mosè cominciò a spiegare questa legge:
6 The Lord your God spoke to us in Choreb, saying, Let it suffice you to have lived [so long] in this mountain.
«Il Signore nostro Dio ci ha parlato sull'Oreb e ci ha detto: Avete dimorato abbastanza su questa montagna;
7 Turn you and depart and enter into the mountain of the Amorites, and [go] to all that dwell near about Araba, to the mountain and the plain and to the south, and the land of the Chananites near the sea, and Antilibanus, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.
voltatevi, levate l'accampamento e andate verso le montagne degli Amorrei e in tutte le regioni vicine: la valle dell'Araba, le montagne, la Sefela, il Negheb, la costa del mare, nel paese dei Cananei e nel Libano, fino al grande fiume, il fiume Eufrate.
8 Behold, [God] has delivered the land before you; go in and inherit the land, which I sware to your fathers, Abraam, and Isaac, and Jacob, to give it to them and to their seed after them.
Ecco, io vi ho posto il paese dinanzi; entrate, prendete in possesso il paese che il Signore ha giurato di dare ai vostri padri, Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe, e alla loro stirpe dopo di essi.
9 And I spoke to you at that time, saying, I shall not be able by myself to bear you.
In quel tempo io vi ho parlato e vi ho detto: Io non posso da solo sostenere il carico del popolo.
10 The Lord your God has multiplied you, and, behold, you are today as the stars of heaven for multitude.
Il Signore vostro Dio vi ha moltiplicati ed ecco oggi siete numerosi come le stelle del cielo.
11 The Lord God of your fathers add to you a thousand-fold more than you are, and bless you as he has spoken to you.
Il Signore, Dio dei vostri padri, vi aumenti anche mille volte di più e vi benedica come vi ha promesso di fare.
12 How shall I alone be able to bear your labor, and your burden, and your gainsayings?
Ma come posso io da solo portare il vostro peso, il vostro carico e le vostre liti?
13 Take to yourselves wise and understanding and prudent men for your tribes, and I will set your leaders over you.
Sceglietevi nelle vostre tribù uomini saggi, intelligenti e stimati, e io li costituirò vostri capi.
14 And you answered me and said, The thing which you have told us [is] good to do.
Voi mi rispondeste: Va bene ciò che proponi di fare.
15 So I took of you wise and understanding and prudent men, and I set them to rule over you as rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, and rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens, and officers to your judges.
Allora presi i capi delle vostre tribù, uomini saggi e stimati, e li stabilii sopra di voi come capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine, capi di decine, e come scribi nelle vostre tribù.
16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear [causes] between your brethren, and judge rightly between a man and [his] brother, and the stranger that is with him.
In quel tempo diedi quest'ordine ai vostri giudici: Ascoltate le cause dei vostri fratelli e giudicate con giustizia le questioni che uno può avere con il fratello o con lo straniero che sta presso di lui.
17 You shall not have respect to persons in judgment, you shall judge small and great equally; you shall not shrink from before the person of a man, for the judgment is God's; and whatever matter shall be too hard for you, you shall bring it to me, and I will hear it.
Nei vostri giudizi non avrete riguardi personali, darete ascolto al piccolo come al grande; non temerete alcun uomo, poiché il giudizio appartiene a Dio; le cause troppo difficili per voi le presenterete a me e io le ascolterò.
18 And I charged upon you at that time all the commands which you shall perform.
In quel tempo io vi ordinai tutte le cose che dovevate fare.
19 And we departed from Choreb, and went through all that great wilderness and terrible, which you saw, by the way of the mountain of the Amorite, as the Lord our God charged us, and we came as far as Cades Barne.
Poi partimmo dall'Oreb e attraversammo tutto quel deserto grande e spaventoso che avete visto, dirigendoci verso le montagne degli Amorrei, come il Signore nostro Dio ci aveva ordinato di fare, e giungemmo a Kades-Barnea.
20 And I said to you, You have come as far as the mountain of the Amorite, which the Lord our God gives to you:
Allora vi dissi: Siete arrivati presso la montagna degli Amorrei, che il Signore nostro Dio sta per darci.
21 behold, the Lord your God has delivered to us the land before you: go up and inherit it as the Lord God of your fathers said to you; fear not, neither be afraid.
Ecco il Signore tuo Dio ti ha posto il paese dinanzi; entra, prendine possesso, come il Signore Dio dei tuoi padri ti ha detto; non temere e non ti scoraggiare!
22 And you all came to me, and said, Let us send men before us, and let them go up to the land for us; and let them bring back to us a report of the way by which we shall go up, and of the cities into which we shall enter.
Voi vi accostaste a me tutti e diceste: Mandiamo uomini innanzi a noi, che esplorino il paese e ci riferiscano sul cammino per il quale noi dovremo salire e sulle città nelle quali dovremo entrare.
23 And the saying pleased me: and I took of you twelve men, one man of a tribe.
La proposta mi piacque e scelsi dodici uomini tra di voi, uno per tribù.
24 And they turned and went up to the mountain, and they came as far as the valley of the cluster, and surveyed it.
Quelli si incamminarono, salirono verso i monti, giunsero alla valle di Escol ed esplorarono il paese.
25 And they took in their hands of the fruit of the land, and brought it to you, and said, The land is good which the Lord our God gives us.
Presero con le mani i frutti del paese, ce li portarono e ci fecero questa relazione: E' buono il paese che il Signore nostro Dio sta per darci.
26 Yet you would not go up, but rebelled against the words of the Lord our God.
Ma voi non voleste entrarvi e vi ribellaste all'ordine del Signore vostro Dio;
27 And you murmured in your tents, and said, Because the Lord hated us, he has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us.
mormoraste nelle vostre tende e diceste: Il Signore ci odia, per questo ci ha fatti uscire dal paese d'Egitto per darci in mano agli Amorrei e per distruggerci.
28 Whither do we go up? and your brethren drew away your heart, saying, [It is a] great nation and populous, and mightier than we; and [there are] cities great and walled up to heaven: moreover we saw there the sons of the giants.
Dove possiamo andare noi? I nostri fratelli ci hanno scoraggiati dicendo: Quella gente è più grande e più alta di noi; le città sono grandi e fortificate fino al cielo; abbiamo visto là perfino dei figli degli Anakiti.
29 And I said to you, Fear not, neither be you afraid of them;
Allora dissi a voi: Non spaventatevi e non abbiate paura di loro.
30 the Lord your God who goes before your face, he shall fight against them together with you effectually, according to all that he wrought for you in the land of Egypt;
Il Signore stesso vostro Dio, che vi precede, combatterà per voi, come ha fatto tante volte sotto gli occhi vostri in Egitto
31 and in this wilderness which you saw, by the way of the mountain of the Amorite; how the Lord your God will bear you as a nursling, as if any man should nurse his child, through all the way which you have gone until you came to this place.
e come ha fatto nel deserto, dove hai visto come il Signore tuo Dio ti ha portato, come un uomo porta il proprio figlio, per tutto il cammino che avete fatto, finché siete arrivati qui.
32 And in this matter you believed not the Lord our God,
Nonostante questo, non aveste fiducia nel Signore vostro Dio
33 who goes before you in the way to choose you a place, guiding you in fire by night, showing you the way by which you go, and a cloud by day.
che andava innanzi a voi nel cammino per cercarvi un luogo dove porre l'accampamento: di notte nel fuoco, per mostrarvi la via dove andare, e di giorno nella nube.
34 And the Lord heard the voice of your words, and being greatly provoked he sware, saying,
Il Signore udì le vostre parole, si adirò e giurò:
35 Not one of these men shall see this good land, which I sware to their fathers,
Nessuno degli uomini di questa malvagia generazione vedrà il buon paese che ho giurato di dare ai vostri padri,
36 except Chaleb the son of Jephonne, he shall see it; and to him I will give the land on which he went up, and to his sons, because he attended to the things of the Lord.
se non Caleb, figlio di Iefunne. Egli lo vedrà e a lui e ai suoi figli darò la terra che ha calcato, perché ha pienamente seguito il Signore.
37 And the Lord was angry with me for your sake, saying, Neither shall you by any means enter therein.
Anche contro di me si adirò il Signore, per causa vostra, e disse: Neanche tu vi entrerai,
38 Joshua the son of Naue, who stands by you, he shall enter in there; do you strengthen him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.
ma vi entrerà Giosuè, figlio di Nun, che sta al tuo servizio; incoraggialo, perché egli metterà Israele in possesso di questo paese.
39 And every young child who this day knows not good or evil, —they shall enter therein, and to them I will give it, and they shall inherit it.
E i vostri bambini, dei quali avete detto: Diventeranno oggetto di preda! e i vostri figli, che oggi non conoscono né il bene né il male, essi vi entreranno; a loro lo darò ed essi lo possiederanno.
40 And you turned and marched into the wilderness, in the way by the Red Sea.
Ma voi volgetevi indietro e incamminatevi verso il deserto, in direzione del Mare Rosso.
41 And you answered and said, We have sinned before the Lord our God; we will go up and fight according to all that the Lord our God has commanded us: and having taken every one his weapons of war, and being gathered together, you went up to the mountain.
Allora voi mi rispondeste: Abbiamo peccato contro il Signore! Entreremo e combatteremo in tutto come il Signore nostro Dio ci ha ordinato. Ognuno di voi cinse le armi e presumeste di salire verso la montagna.
42 And the Lord said to me, Tell them, You shall not go up, neither shall you fight, for I am not with you; thus shall you not be destroyed before your enemies.
Il Signore mi disse: Ordina loro: Non salite e non combattete, perché io non sono in mezzo a voi; voi sarete sconfitti davanti ai vostri nemici.
43 And I spoke to you, and you did not listen to me; and you transgressed the commandment of the Lord; and you forced your way and went up into the mountain.
Io ve lo dissi, ma voi non mi ascoltaste; anzi vi ribellaste all'ordine del Signore, foste presuntuosi e osaste salire verso i monti.
44 And the Amorite who lived in that mountain came out to meet you, and pursued you as bees do, and wounded you from Seir to Herma.
Allora gli Amorrei, che abitano quella montagna, uscirono contro di voi, vi inseguirono come fanno le api e vi batterono in Seir fino a Corma.
45 And you sat down and wept before the Lord our God, and the Lord listened not to your voice, neither did he take heed to you.
Voi tornaste e piangeste davanti al Signore; ma il Signore non diede ascolto alla vostra voce e non vi porse l'orecchio.
46 And you lived in Cades many days, as many days as you lived [there].
Così rimaneste in Kades molti giorni, per tutto il tempo in cui vi siete rimasti.
