Daniel 6
1 And it pleased Darius, and he set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, to be in all his kingdom;
Il parut bon à Darius de préposer au royaume cent vingt préfets, pour gouverner tout le royaume.
2 and over them three governors, of whom one was, Daniel; for the satraps to give account to them, that the king should not be troubled.
Au-dessus d’eux il y avait trois ministres, dont était Daniel; c’est à eux que ces préfets devaient rendre des comptes, en sorte que le roi ne subît aucun dommage.
3 And Daniel was over them, for [there was] an excellent spirit in him; and the king set him over all his kingdom.
Bientôt ce Daniel prit le dessus sur les ministres et les préfets, étant doué d’un esprit supérieur, et le roi projetait de le mettre à la tête de tout le royaume.
4 Then the governors and satraps sought to find occasion against Daniel; but they found against him no occasion, nor trespass, nor error, because he was faithful.
Alors les ministres et les préfets s’appliquèrent à trouver un grief contre Daniel, du chef de son gouvernement, mais ils ne purent découvrir ni grief, ni méfait, parce qu’il était loyal, de sorte que ni erreur ni faute ne purent être surprises chez lui.
5 And the governors said, We shall not find occasion against Daniel, except in the ordinances of his God.
Aussi ces hommes-là dirent: "Nous ne trouverons aucun grief contre ce Daniel, à moins que nous ne le prenions en défaut dans les choses de sa religion."
6 Then the governors and satraps stood by the king, and said to him, King Darius, live for ever.
Aussitôt les ministres et les préfets se précipitèrent chez le roi et lui parlèrent ainsi: "Vive à jamais le roi Darius!
7 All who preside over your kingdom, captains and satraps, chiefs and local governors, have taken counsel together, to establish by a royal statue and to confirm a decree, that whoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, save of you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions.
Tous les ministres du royaume, les préfets, les satrapes, les conseillers et les gouverneurs se sont concertés pour faire établir une ordonnance royale et promulguer une défense déclarant que quiconque, durant trente jours, adresserait une prière à tout autre Dieu ou homme qu’à toi-même, ô roi, serait jeté dans la fosse aux lions.
8 Now then, O king, establish the decree, and publish a writ, that the decree of the Persians and Medes be not changed.
Donc, ô roi, établis la défense et rédige l’édit qui ne puisse être modifié, conformément à la loi immuable de Médie et de Perse."
9 Then king Darius commanded the decree to be written.
En conséquence, le roi Darius rédigea l’édit et la défense.
10 And when Daniel knew that the decree was ordered, he went into his house; and his windows were opened in his chambers toward Jerusalem, and three times in the day he knelt upon his knees, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he used to do before.
Or, Daniel, dès qu’il apprit que l’édit avait été rédigé, rentra chez lui. II avait, dans sa chambre supérieure, des fenêtres ouvertes dans la direction de Jérusalem, et trois fois par jour il se mettait à genoux, priant et louant Dieu tout comme il avait fait auparavant.
11 Then these men watched, and found Daniel praying and supplicating to his God.
Cependant, ces mêmes hommes se précipitèrent et surprirent Daniel priant et implorant son Dieu.
12 And they came and said to the king, O king, has you not made a decree, that whatever man shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, but of you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? And the king said, The word is true, and the decree of the Medes and Persians shall not pass.
Aussitôt ils se présentèrent devant le roi et l’entretinrent de la défense royale: "N’As-tu pas dirent-ils édicté une défense en vertu de laquelle tout homme qui, durant trente jours, adresserait une prière à tout autre Dieu ou homme que toi-même, ô roi, serait jeté dans la fosse aux lions?" Le roi répondit: "La chose est constante, conformément à la loi immuable de Médie et de Perse."
13 Then they answered and said before the king, Daniel of the children of the captivity of Judea, has not submitted to your decree; and three times in the day he makes his requests of his God.
Et eux de répliquer sur-le-champ au roi: "Daniel, qui fait partie des exilés de Judée, n’a tenu aucun compte de toi, ô roi, ni de la défense que tu as rédigée: trois fois par jour, il fait sa prière."
14 Then the king, when he heard the saying, was much grieved for Daniel and he greatly exerted himself for Daniel to deliver him: and he exerted himself till evening to deliver him.
Dès que le roi entendit ces paroles, il en fut très peiné, et il prit à cœur de tirer Daniel d’affaire: jusqu’au coucher du soleil il avisa aux moyens de le sauver.
15 Then those men said to the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is that we must not change any decree of statue which the king shall make.
Mais alors ces gens firent irruption chez le roi et lui dirent: "Sache, ô roi, qu’une loi exige chez les Mèdes et les Perses que toute défense et tout édit établis par le roi soient immuables."
16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. But the king said to Daniel, Your God whom you serve continually, he will deliver you.
Là-dessus, le roi donna un ordre, on amena Daniel et on le jeta dans la fosse aux lions: "Puisse, lui dit le roi, ton Dieu que tu sers constamment te sauver!"
17 And they brought a stone, and put it on the mouth of the den; and the king sealed [it] with his ring, and with the ring of his nobles; that the case might not be altered with regard to Daniel.
On apporta une pierre et on la posa sur l’orifice de la fosse; le roi la scella de son anneau et des anneaux de ses grands, pour qu’il n’y eût aucun revirement à l’égard de Daniel.
18 And the king departed to his house, and lay down fasting, and they brought him no food; and his sleep departed from him. But God shut the mouths of the lions, and they not molest Daniel.
Ensuite, le roi rentra dans son palais et passa la nuit en jeûnant; il ne fit pas dresser la table devant lui, et le sommeil s’obstina à le fuir.
19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and came in have to the den of lions.
Dès l’aube, quand le jour vint à poindre, le roi se leva et se rendit en toute hâte à la fosse aux lions.
20 And when he drew near to the den, he cried with a loud voice, Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lion's mouth?
Arrivé près de la fosse, il appela Daniel d’une voix attristée: "Daniel, serviteur du Dieu vivant, s’écria le roi en s’adressant à Daniel, ton Dieu que tu sers constamment a-t-il pu te préserver des lions?"
21 And Daniel said to the king, O king, live for ever.
Aussitôt Daniel parla au roi: "Vive, dit-il, le roi à jamais!
22 My God has sent his angel, and stopped the lions' mouths, and they have not hurt me: for uprightness was found in me before him; and moreover before you, O king, I have committed no trespass.
Mon Dieu a envoyé son ange et fermé la gueule des lions, en sorte qu’ils ne m’ont fait aucun mal, parce que mon innocence a été reconnue par lui, de même qu’envers toi je n’ai commis aucun méfait."
23 Then the king was very glad for him, and he commanded to bring Daniel out of the den. So Daniel was brought out of the den, and there was found no hurt upon him, because he believed in his God.
Alors le roi fut extrêmement content, et il ordonna de remonter Daniel de la fosse aux lions. Quand Daniel eut été remonté de la fosse, il ne portait aucune blessure, parce qu’il avait eu confiance en son Dieu.
24 And the king commanded, and they brought the men that had accused Daniel, and they were cast into the den of lions, they, and their children, and their wives: and they reached not the bottom of the den before the lions had the mastery of them, and utterly broke to pieces all their bones.
Puis, sur l’ordre du roi, on amena les hommes qui avaient dénoncé Daniel, et on les jeta dans la fosse aux lions, eux, leurs enfants et leurs femmes. Ils n’étaient pas encore arrivés au fond de la fosse, que les lions se jetèrent sur eux et leur broyèrent tous les membres.
25 Then king Darius wrote to all nations, tribes, [and] languages, who dwell in all the earth, [saying], Peace be multiplied to you.
Alors le roi Darius manda à l’ensemble des nations, peuples et langues qui sont répandus sur toute la terre: "Que votre prospérité soit grande!
26 This decree has been set forth by me in every dominion of my kingdom, that [men] tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living and eternal God, and his kingdom shall not be destroyed, and his dominion is for ever.
L’Ordre est donné par moi que dans toute l’étendue de mon royaume on manifeste crainte et vénération pour le Dieu de Daniel car il est le Dieu vivant, et il subsiste éternellement; sa royauté est indestructible et sa dénomination sans fin.
27 He helps and delivers, and works signs and wonders in the heaven and on the earth, who has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.
Il préserve et il sauve, il accomplit des miracles et des prodiges au ciel et sur la terre, lui qui a sauvé Daniel de la griffe des lions."
28 And Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
Et ce même Daniel prospéra sous le règne de Darius et sous le règne de Cyrus le Perse.
