Kings II 18
1 And David numbered the people with him, and set over them captains of thousands and captains of hundreds.
Or Davide fece la rivista della gente che avea seco, e costituì dei capitani di migliaia e de’ capitani di centinaia per comandarla.
2 And David sent away the people, the third part under the hand of Joab, and the third part under the hand of Abessa the son of Saruia, the brother of Joab, and the third part under the hand of Ethi the Gittite. And David said to the people, I also will surely go out with you.
E fece marciare un terzo della sua gente sotto il comando di Joab, un terzo sotto il comando di Abishai, figliuolo di Tseruia, fratello di Joab, e un terzo sotto il comando di Ittai di Gath. Poi il re disse al popolo: “Voglio andare anch’io con voi!”
3 And they said, You shall not go out: for if we should indeed flee, they will not care for us; and if half of us should die, they will not mind us; for you [are] as ten thousand of us: and now [it is] well that you shall be to us an aid to help us in the city.
Ma il popolo rispose: “Tu non devi venire; perché, se noi fossimo messi in fuga, non si farebbe alcun caso di noi; quand’anche perisse la metà di noi, non se ne farebbe alcun caso; ma tu conti per diecimila di noi; or dunque è meglio che tu ti tenga pronto a darci aiuto dalla città”.
4 And the king said to them, Whatsoever shall seem good in your eyes I will do. And the king stood by the side of the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.
Il re rispose loro: “Farò quello che vi par bene”. E il re si fermò presso la porta, mentre tutto l’esercito usciva a schiere di cento e di mille uomini.
5 And the king commanded Joab and Abessa and Ethi, saying, Spare for my sake the young man Abessalom. And all the people heard the king charging all the commanders concerning Abessalom.
E il re diede quest’ordine a Joab, ad Abishai e ad Ittai: “Per amor mio, trattate con riguardo il giovine Absalom!” E tutto il popolo udì quando il re diede a tutti i capitani quest’ordine relativamente ad Absalom.
6 And all the people went out into the wood against Israel; and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim.
L’esercito si mise dunque in campagna contro Israele, e la battaglia ebbe luogo nella foresta di Efraim.
7 And the people of Israel fell down there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter in that day, [even] twenty thousand men.
E il popolo d’Israele fu quivi sconfitto dalla gente di Davide; e la strage ivi fu grande in quel giorno, caddero ventimila uomini.
8 And the battle there was scattered over the face of all the land: and the wood consumed more of the people than the sword consumed among the people in that day.
La battaglia si estese su tutta la contrada; e la foresta divorò in quel giorno assai più gente di quella che non avesse divorato la spada.
9 And Abessalom went to meet the servants of David: and Abessalom was mounted on his mule, and the mule came under the thick boughs of a great oak; and his head was entangled in the oak, and he was suspended between heaven and earth; and the mule passed on from under him.
E Absalom s’imbatté nella gente di Davide. Absalom cavalcava il suo mulo; il mulo entrò sotto i rami intrecciati di un gran terebinto, e il capo di Absalom s’impigliò nel terebinto, talché egli rimase sospeso fra cielo e terra; mentre il mulo, ch’era sotto di lui, passava oltre.
10 And a man saw it, and reported to Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Abessalom hanging in an oak.
Un uomo vide questo, e lo venne a riferire a Joab, dicendo: “Ho veduto Absalom appeso a un terebinto”.
11 And Joab said to the man who reported it to him, And, behold, you did see him: why did you not strike him there to the ground? and I would have given you ten [pieces] of silver, and a girdle.
Joab rispose all’uomo che gli recava la nuova: “Come! tu l’hai visto? E perché non l’hai tu, sul posto, steso morto al suolo? Io non avrei mancato di darti dieci sicli d’argento e una cintura”.
12 And the man said to Joab, Were I even to receive a thousand shekels of silver, I would not lift my hand against the king's son; for in our ears the king charged you and Abessa and Ethi, saying, Take care of the young man Abessalom for me,
Ma quell’uomo disse a Joab: “Quand’anche mi fossero messi in mano mille sicli d’argento, io non metterei la mano addosso al figliuolo del re; poiché noi abbiamo udito l’ordine che il re ha dato a te, ad Abishai e ad Ittai dicendo: Badate che nessuno tocchi il giovine Absalom!
13 so as to do no harm to his life: and nothing of the matter will be concealed from the king, and you will set yourself against me.
E se io avessi perfidamente attentato alla sua vita, siccome nulla rimane occulto al re, tu stesso saresti sorto contro di me!”
14 And Joab said, I will begin this; I will not thus remain with you. And Joab took three darts in his hand, and thrust them into the heart of Abessalom, while he was yet alive in the heart of the oak.
Allora Joab disse: “Io non voglio perder così il tempo con te”. E, presi in mano tre dardi, li immerse nel cuore di Absalom, che era ancora vivo in mezzo al terebinto.
15 And ten young men that bore Joab's armor compassed Abessalom, and struck him and killed him.
Poi dieci giovani scudieri di Joab circondarono Absalom, e coi loro colpi lo finirono.
16 And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing Israel, for Joab spared the people.
Allora Joab fe’ sonare la tromba, e il popolo fece ritorno cessando d’inseguire Israele, perché Joab glielo impedì.
17 And he took Abessalom, and cast him into a great cavern in the wood, into a deep pit, and set up over him a very great heap of stones: and all Israel fled every man to his tent.
Poi presero Absalom, lo gettarono in una gran fossa nella foresta, ed elevarono sopra di lui un mucchio grandissimo di pietre; e tutto Israele fuggì, ciascuno nella sua tenda.
18 Now Abessalom while yet alive had taken and set up for himself the pillar near which he was taken, and set it up so as to have the pillar in the king's dale; for he said he had no son to keep his name in remembrance: and he called the pillar, Abessalom's hand, until this day.
Or Absalom, mentr’era in vita, si era eretto il monumento ch’è nella Valle del re; perché diceva: “Io non ho un figliuolo che conservi il ricordo del mio nome”; e diede il suo nome a quel monumento, che anche oggi si chiama “monumento di Absalom”.
19 And Achimaas the son of Sadoc said, Let me run now and carry glad tidings to the king, for the Lord has delivered him from the hand of his enemies.
Ed Ahimaats, figliuolo di Tsadok, disse a Joab: “Lasciami correre a portare al re la notizia che l’Eterno gli ha fatto giustizia contro i suoi nemici”.
20 And Joab said to him, You [shall] not [be] a messenger of glad tidings this day; you shall bear them another day; but on this day you shall bear no tidings, because the king's son is dead.
Joab gli rispose: “Non sarai tu che porterai oggi la notizia; la porterai un altro giorno; non porterai oggi la notizia, perché il figliuolo del re è morto”.
21 And Joab said to Chusi, Go, report to the king all that you have seen. And Chusi did obeisance to Joab, and went out.
Poi Joab disse all’Etiopo: “Va’, e riferisci al re quello che hai veduto”. L’Etiopo s’inchinò a Joab, e corse via.
22 And Achimaas the son of Sadoc said again to Joab, Nay, let me also run after Chusi. And Joab said, Why would you thus run, my son? attend, you have no tidings for profit if you go.
Ahimaats, figliuolo di Tsadok, disse di nuovo a Joab: “Qualunque cosa avvenga, ti prego, lasciami correr dietro all’Etiopo!” Joab gli disse: “Ma perché, figliuol mio, vuoi tu correre? La notizia non ti recherà nulla di buono”.
23 And he said, Why should I not run? and Joab said to him, Run. And Achimaas ran along the way of Kechar, and outran Chusi.
E l’altro: “Qualunque cosa avvenga, voglio correre”. E Joab gli disse: “Corri!” Allora Ahimaats prese la corsa per la via della pianura, e oltrepassò l’Etiopo.
24 And David was sitting between the two gates: and the watchman went up on the top of the gate of the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone before him.
Or Davide stava sedendo fra le due porte; la sentinella salì sul tetto della porta dal lato del muro; alzò gli occhi, guardò, ed ecco un uomo che correva tutto solo.
25 And the watchman cried out, and reported to the king. And the king said, If he be alone, [there are] good tidings in his mouth. And the man came and drew near.
La sentinella gridò e avvertì il re. Il re disse: “Se è solo, porta notizie”. E quello s’andava avvicinando sempre più.
26 And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman cried at the gate, and said, And look, another man running alone. And the king said, He also brings glad tidings.
Poi la sentinella vide un altr’uomo che correva, e gridò al guardiano: “Ecco un altr’uomo che corre tutto solo!” E il re: “Anche questo porta notizie”.
27 And the watchman said, I see the running of the first as the running of Achimaas the son of Sadoc. And the king said, He [is] a good man, and will come to [report] glad tidings.
La sentinella disse: “Il modo di correre del primo mi par quello di Ahimaats, figliuolo di Tsadok”. E il re disse: “E’ un uomo dabbene, e viene a portare buone notizie”.
28 And Achimaas cried out and said to the king, Peace. And he did obeisance to the king with his face to the ground, and said, Blessed [be] the Lord your God, who has delivered up the men that lifted up their hands against my lord the king.
E Ahimaats gridò al re: “Pace!” E, prostratosi dinanzi al re con la faccia a terra, disse: “Benedetto sia l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, che ha dato in tuo potere gli uomini che aveano alzate le mani contro il re, mio signore!”
29 And the king said, [Is] the young man Abessalom safe? and Achimaas said, I saw a great multitude [at the time] of Joab's sending the king's servant and your servant, and I knew not what was there.
Il re disse: “Il giovine Absalom sta egli bene?” Ahimaats rispose: “Quando Joab mandava il servo del re e me tuo servo io vidi un gran tumulto, ma non so di che si trattasse”.
30 And the king said, Turn aside, stand still here. And he turned aside, and stood.
Il re gli disse: “Mettiti là da parte”. E quegli si mise da parte, e aspettò.
31 And, behold, Chusi came up, and said to the king, Let my lord the king hear glad tidings, for the Lord has avenged you this day upon all them that rose up against you.
Quand’ecco arrivare l’Etiopo, che disse: “Buone notizie per il re signore! L’Eterno t’ha reso oggi giustizia, liberandoti dalle mani di tutti quelli ch’erano insorti contro di te”.
32 And the king said to Chusi, Is it well with the young man Abessalom? and Chusi said, Let the enemies of my lord the king, and all whoever have risen up against him for evil, be as that young man.
Il re disse all’Etiopo: “Il giovine Absalom sta egli bene?” L’Etiopo rispose: “Possano i nemici del re mio signore, e tutti quelli che insorgono contro di te per farti del male, subir la sorte di quel giovane!”
33 And the king was troubled, and went to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and thus he said as he went, My son Abessalom, my son, my son Abessalom; would God I had died for you, [even] I [had died] for you, Abessalom, my son, my son!
Allora il re, vivamente commosso, salì nella camera che era sopra la porta, e pianse; e, nell’andare, diceva: “Absalom figliuolo mio! Figliuolo mio, Absalom figliuol mio! Oh foss’io pur morto in vece tua, o Absalom figliuolo mio, figliuolo mio!”
