Kings III 8
1 And it came to pass when Solomon had finished building the house of the Lord and his own house after twenty years, then king Solomon assembled all the elders of Israel in Sion, to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of the city of David, this is Sion,
Alors Salomon convoqua les anciens d’Israël, tous les chefs de tribu et chefs de famille des enfants d’Israël, près du roi Salomon à Jérusalem, pour procéder au transfert de l’arche d’alliance de l’Eternel de la cité de David, qui est Sion.
2 in the month of Athanin.
Tous les citoyens d’Israël se réunirent auprès du roi Salomon dans le mois des Ethanim, c’est-à-dire le septième mois, pendant la fête.
3 And the priests took up the ark,
Tous les anciens d’Israël étant arrivés, les prêtres se chargèrent de l’arche.
4 and the tabernacle of testimony, and the holy furniture that was in the tabernacle of testimony.
On transporta l’arche du Seigneur, la tente d’assignation et tous les objets sacrés qui s’y trouvaient; prêtres et lévites les transportèrent ensemble.
5 And the king and all Israel [were occupied] before the ark, sacrificing sheep [and] oxen, without number.
Le roi Salomon et toute la communauté d’Israël rassemblée près de lui, se plaçant ensemble devant l’arche, firent des sacrifices de menu et de gros bétail, si nombreux qu’on n’aurait pu les compter.
6 And the priests bring in the ark into its place, into the oracle of the house, even into the holy of holies, under the wings of the cherubs.
Alors les prêtres installèrent l’arche d’alliance de l’Eternel à la place qui lui était destinée, dans le debir ou Saint des saints, sous les ailes des chérubins.
7 For the cherubs spread out their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubs covered the ark and its holy things above.
Car les chérubins déployaient leurs ailes dans la direction de l’arche, de sorte qu’ils couvraient, en les dominant, et l’arche et ses barres.
8 And the holy staves projected, and the ends of the holy staves appeared out of the holy places in front of the oracle, and were not seen without.
On avait prolongé ces barres, de façon que leurs extrémités s’apercevaient de l’enceinte sacrée, à l’entrée du debir, mais n’étaient pas apparentes extérieurement; elles y sont restées jusqu’à ce jour.
9 There was nothing in the ark except the two tables of stone, the tables of the covenant which Moses put [there] in Choreb, which [tables] the Lord made [as a covenant] with the children of Israel in their going forth from the land of Egypt.
Il n’y avait dans l’arche que les deux tables de pierre que Moïse y déposa près de l’Horeb, alors que l’Eternel conclut un pacte avec les Israélites, après leur sortie du pays d’Egypte.
10 And it came to pass when the priests departed out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house.
Or, lorsque les prêtres sortirent du lieu saint, une nuée s’étendit dans la maison du Seigneur,
11 And the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, because the glory of the Lord filled the house.
et les prêtres ne purent, par suite, s’y tenir pour faire leur service, parce que la majesté divine remplissait la maison du Seigneur.
Alors Salomon dit: "L’Eternel a promis de résider dans cette brume;
c’est donc bien pour toi, Eternel, que j’ai bâti cette demeure; elle sera à jamais le siège de ta résidence!"
14 And the king turned his face, and the king blessed all Israel, (and the whole assembly of Israel stood: )
Puis le roi tourna sa face et bénit toute l’assemblée d’Israël, celle-ci restant debout;
15 and he said, Blessed [be] the Lord God of Israel today, who spoke by his mouth concerning David my father, and has fulfilled it with his hands, saying,
et il dit: "Loué soit l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, qui a dit de sa propre bouche à David, mon père, et réalisé de sa propre main cette parole:
16 From the day that I brought out my people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city in [any] one tribe of Israel to build a house, so that my name should be there: but I chose Jerusalem that my name should be there, and I chose David to be over my people Israel.
"Depuis le jour où j’ai fait sortir mon peuple Israël de l’Egypte, je n’avais choisi aucune ville entre les tribus d’Israël, pour l’édification du temple où devait régner mon nom. Et maintenant j’ai adopté David comme chef de mon peuple Israël."
17 And it was in the heart of my father to build a house to the name of the Lord God of Israel.
Or, David, mon père, eut la pensée d’édifier un temple en l’honneur de l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël.
18 And the Lord said to David my father, Forasmuch as it came into your heart to build a house to my name, you did well that it came upon your heart.
Mais l’Eternel dit à David, mon père: "La pensée que tu as conçue d’édifier un temple en mon honneur est une bonne pensée.
19 Nevertheless you shall not build the house, but your son that has proceeded out of your bowels, he shall build the house to my name.
Toutefois, ce n’est pas toi qui bâtiras ce temple; c’est ton fils, celui qui doit naître de toi, qui bâtira ce temple en mon honneur."
20 And the Lord has confirmed the word that he spoke, and I am risen up in the place of my father David, and I have sat down on the throne of Israel, as the Lord spoke, and I have built the house to the name of the Lord God of Israel.
L’Eternel a réalisé sa parole; j’ai remplacé David, mon père, sur le trône d’Israël, selon la parole du Seigneur; j’ai construit ce temple sous l’invocation de l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël,
21 And I have set there a place for the ark, in which is the covenant of the Lord, which the Lord made with our fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.
et j’y ai assigné une place à l’arche où repose l’alliance de l’Eternel, celle qu’il fit avec nos pères lorsqu’il les eut tirés du pays d’Egypte."
22 And Solomon stood up in front of the altar before all the congregation of Israel; and he spread out his hands toward heaven:
Puis Salomon alla se placer devant l’autel du Seigneur, en présence de toute l’assemblée d’Israël, étendit les mains vers le ciel,
23 and he said, Lord God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above and on the earth beneath, keeping covenant and mercy with your servant who walks before you with all his heart;
et dit: "Eternel, Dieu d’Israël! Nulle puissance ne t’égale, ni là-haut dans le ciel, ni sur la terre ici-bas, toi qui maintiens ton pacte de bienveillance à tes serviteurs, lorsqu’ils marchent de tout leur cœur dans ta voie;
24 which you have kept toward your servant David my father: for you have spoken by your mouth and you have fulfilled it with your hands, as [at] this day.
toi qui as observé à l’égard de ton serviteur David, mon père, ce que tu lui avais promis… Ta bouche l’avait proclamé, ta main l’a accompli en ce jour.
25 And now, O Lord God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father, [the promises] which you have spoken to him, saying, There shall not be taken from you a man sitting before me on the throne of Israel, provided only your children shall take heed to their ways, to walk before me as you have walked before me.
Et maintenant, Seigneur, Dieu d’Israël, garde à ton serviteur David la promesse que tu lui as faite en ces termes: "Aucun des tiens ne sera exclu par moi du trône d’Israël, pourvu que tes fils persévèrent dans leur voie, marchant devant moi comme tu as marché toi-même."
26 And now, O Lord God of Israel, let, I pray you, your word to David my father be confirmed.
Maintenant donc, Dieu d’Israël, daigne réaliser la promesse que tu as faite à ton serviteur, à David, mon père.
27 But will God indeed dwell with men upon the earth? if the heaven and heaven of heavens will not suffice you, how much less even this house which I have built to your name?
Mais est-ce qu’en vérité Dieu résiderait sur la terre? Alors que le ciel et tous les cieux ne sauraient te contenir, combien moins cette maison que je viens d’édifier!
28 Yet, O Lord God of Israel, you shall look upon my petition, to hear the prayer which your servant prays to you in your presence this day,
Tu accueilleras cependant, Eternel, mon Dieu, la prière et les supplications de ton serviteur, tu exauceras la prière fervente qu’il t’adresse en ce jour:
29 that your eyes may be open toward this house day and night, even toward the place which you said, My name shall be there, to hear the prayer which your servant prays at this place day and night.
que tes yeux soient ouverts nuit et jour sur cette maison, sur ce lieu dont tu as dit: "Mon nom y règnera", et que tu entendes les prières que ton serviteur t’y adressera.
30 And you shall listen to the prayer of your servant, and of your people Israel, which they shall pray toward this place; and you shall hear in your dwelling-place in heaven, and you shall do and be gracious.
Oui, tu entendras les supplications de ton serviteur et de ton peuple Israël, proférées en ce lieu; du haut du ciel où tu résides, tu les écouteras et tu pardonneras.
31 Whatsoever trespasses any [one] shall commit against his neighbor, —and if he shall take upon him an oath so that he should swear, and he shall come and make confession before your altar in this house,
Si un homme pèche envers son prochain, et qu’on lui défère le serment, et qu’il vienne le prononcer ici, devant ton autel,
32 then shall you hear from heaven, and do, and you shall judge your people Israel, that the wicked should be condemned, to recompense his way upon his head; and to justify the righteous, to give to him according to his righteousness.
toi, tu l’entendras dans le ciel, tu agiras, tu feras justice à tes serviteurs, punissant le coupable et faisant retomber son méfait sur sa tête, favorisant l’innocent en raison de sa droiture.
33 When your people Israel falls before enemies, because they shall sin against you, and they shall return and confess to your name, and they shall pray and supplicate in this house,
Si ton peuple Israël est battu par un ennemi pour t’avoir offensé, mais qu’ensuite ils reviennent à toi, rendent hommage à ton nom, te prient et t’implorent dans cette maison,
34 then shall you hear from heaven, and be gracious to the sins of your people Israel, and you shall restore them to the land which you gave to their fathers.
toi, tu les entendras dans le ciel, tu pardonneras l’offense de ton peuple Israël, et tu le ramèneras dans le pays que tu as donné à ses pères.
35 When the heaven is restrained, and there is no rain, because they shall sin against you, and the shall pray toward this place, and they shall make confession to your name, and shall turn from their sins when you shall have humbled them,
Si le ciel se ferme et refuse la pluie, parce qu’ils auront péché devant toi, mais qu’ils prient dans ce lieu, rendent hommage à ton nom et reviennent de leur péché parce que tu les auras châtiés,
36 then you shall hear from heaven, and be merciful to the sins of your servant and of your people Israel; for you shall show them the good way to walk in it, and you shall give rain upon the earth which you have given to your people for an inheritance.
toi, tu les entendras dans le ciel, tu pardonneras le péché de tes serviteurs, de ton peuple Israël, en leur montrant le bon chemin où ils doivent marcher, et tu enverras la pluie à ce pays que tu as donné en possession à ton peuple.
37 If there should be famine, if there should be death, because there should be blasting, locust, or if there be mildew, and if their enemy oppress them in [any] one of their cities, [with regard to] every calamity, every trouble,
Si une famine survient dans le pays, s’il y sévit une épidémie, une maladie des blés, une invasion de sauterelles, le siège de ses villes par l’ennemi, une calamité ou un fléau quelconques;
38 every prayer, every supplication whatever shall be made by any man, as they shall know each the plague of his heart, and shall spread abroad his hands to this house,
si quelque membre de ton peuple Israël te supplie et t’implore, chacun connaissant la plaie de son cœur et étendant les mains vers cette maison,
39 then shall you listen from heaven, out of your established dwelling-place, and shall be merciful, and shall do, and recompense to [every] man according to his ways, as you shall know his heart, for you alone know the heart of all the children of men:
toi, tu l’entendras du ciel, ton auguste résidence, et tu agiras avec clémence, traitant chacun selon sa conduite, selon que tu connais son cœur, car seul tu connais le cœur de tous les humains.
40 that they may fear you all the days that they live upon the land, which you have given to our fathers.
De la sorte, ils te révéreront tout le temps qu’ils vivront sur cette terre que tu as donnée à nos aïeux.
41 And for the stranger who is not of your people,
Je t’implore aussi pour l’étranger qui ne fait pas partie de ton peuple Israël et qui viendrait de loin pour honorer ton nom.
42 when they shall come and pray toward this place,
Car ils entendront parler de ton grand nom, de ta main puissante et de ton bras étendu, et ils viendront prier dans cette maison;
43 then shall you hear [them] from heaven, out of your established dwelling-place, and you shall do according to all that the stranger shall call upon you for, that all the nations may know your name, and fear you, as [do] your people Israel, and may know that your name has been called on this house which I have builded.
toi, tu l’entendras du ciel, ton auguste résidence, et tu exauceras les vœux que t’adressera l’étranger, afin que tous les peuples du monde connaissent ton nom, qu’ils te révèrent comme ton peuple Israël, et qu’ils sachent qu’elle est sous l’invocation da ton nom, cette maison que j’ai bâtie.
44 [If it be] that your people shall go forth to war against their enemies in the way by which you shall turn them, and pray in the name of the Lord toward the city which you have chosen, and the house which I have built to your name,
Quand ton peuple ira en guerre contre l’ennemi, là où tu l’enverras, et qu’ils t’adresseront leur prière, Seigneur, tournés vers la ville que tu as élue et vers la maison que j’ai bâtie en ton honneur,
45 then shall you hear from heaven their supplication and their prayer, and shall execute judgment for them.
tu entendras du ciel leur voix suppliante, et tu leur feras justice.
46 [If it be] that they shall sin against you, (for there is not a man who will not sin, ) and you shall bring them and deliver them up before their enemies, and they that take [them] captive shall carry [them] to a land far or near,
Que s’ils pèchent envers toi car il n’est point d’homme qui ne pèche et qu’irrité contre eux tu les abandonnes à l’ennemi, pour qu’il les conduise captifs dans son pays, éloigné ou voisin,
47 and they shall turn their hearts in the land whither they have been carried captives, and turn in the land of their sojourning, and supplicate you, saying, We have sinned, we have done unjustly, we have transgressed,
et que, venant à résipiscence dans le pays de leur exil, ils s’amendent et t’implorent en disant: "Nous avons péché, nous avons mal agi, nous sommes coupables";
48 and they shall turn to you with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies whither you have carried them captives, and shall pray to you toward their land which you have given to their fathers, and the city which you have chosen, and the house which I have built to your name:
s’ils reviennent à toi de tout leur cœur et de toute leur âme dans le pays où leurs ennemis les détiennent, et qu’ils t’adressent leur prière dans la direction de leur pays que tu as donné à leurs pères, de la ville que tu as élue et de la maison que j’ai bâtie en ton honneur,
49 then shall you hear from heaven your established dwelling-place,
du haut du ciel, ton auguste demeure, tu entendras, tu écouteras leur prière suppliante, et tu leur feras justice.
50 and you shall be merciful to their unrighteousness wherein they have trespassed against you, and according to all their transgressions wherewith they have transgressed against you, and you shall cause them to be pitied before them that carried them captives, and they shall have compassion on them:
Tu pardonneras à ton peuple ses péchés, ses offenses à ton égard, et tu inspireras compassion pour lui à ses vainqueurs, afin qu’ils aient pitié de lui.
51 for [they are] your people and your inheritance, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, out of the midst of the furnace of iron.
Car il est ton peuple et ton héritage, que tu as fait sortir de l’Egypte, du milieu de ce creuset de fer.
52 And let your eyes and your ears be opened to the supplication of your servant, and to the supplication of your people Israel, to listen to them in all things for which they shall call upon you.
Que tes yeux restent ouverts aux supplications de ton serviteur et à celles de ton peuple Israël, pour les exaucer toutes les fois qu’ils t’invoqueront.
53 Because you have set them apart for an inheritance to yourself out of all the nations of the earth, as you spoke by the hand of your servant Moses, when you brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt, O Lord God.
Car toi-même tu te les es réservés comme ton héritage entre tous les peuples de la terre, comme tu l’as déclaré par l’organe de Moïse, ton serviteur, alors que tu fis sortir nos pères de l’Egypte, ô Seigneur—Elohim!"
54 And it came to pass when Solomon had finished praying to the Lord all this prayer and supplication, that he rose up from before the altar of the Lord, [after] having knelt upon his knees, and his hands [were] spread out towards heaven.
Salomon, ayant achevé d’adresser à l’Eternel toute cette prière et cette supplication, se releva de devant l’autel où il s’était mis à genoux, les mains étendues vers le ciel.
55 And he stood, and blessed all the congregation of Israel with a loud voice, saying,
Ainsi debout, il bénit toute l’assemblée d’Israël à haute voix, en ces termes:
56 Blessed [be] the Lord this day, who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he said: there has not failed one word among all his good words which he spoke by the hand of his servant Moses.
"Gloire au Seigneur, qui a donné le repos à son peuple Israël, accomplissant de tout point sa promesse! Pas une n’a fait défaut de toutes les bonnes paroles qu’il avait dites par l’organe de Moïse, son serviteur.
57 May the Lord our God be with us, as he was with our fathers; let him not desert us nor turn from us,
Veuille l’Eternel, notre Dieu, être avec nous comme il a été avec nos pères, ne nous abandonner ni s’éloigner de nous!
58 that he may turn our hearts toward him to walk in all his ways, and to keep all his commandments, and his ordinances which he commanded our fathers.
Qu’il incline nos cœurs à son obéissance, afin que nous suivions toutes ses voies, que nous gardions ses préceptes, ses lois et ses statuts, qu’il prescrivit à nos pères!
59 And let these words, which I have prayed before the Lord our God, [be] near to the Lord our God day and night, to maintain the cause of your servant, and the cause of your people Israel for ever.
Et puissent ces paroles suppliantes que j’ai adressées à l’Eternel, notre Dieu, être présentes à sa pensée jour et nuit, afin qu’il fasse droit à son serviteur et à son peuple Israël, jour par jour,
60 that all the nations of the earth may know that the Lord God, he [is] God, and there is none beside.
et que tous les peuples de la terre reconnaissent que c’est l’Eternel qui est le vrai Dieu, qu’il n’en est point d’autre!
61 And let our hearts be perfect toward the Lord our God, to walk also holily in his ordinances, and to keep his commandments, as at this day.
Puisse aussi votre cœur être attaché sans réserve à l’Eternel, notre Dieu, pour que vous suiviez ses lois et que vous gardiez ses préceptes comme en ce jour!"
62 And the king and all the children of Israel offered sacrifice before the Lord.
Le roi, et tout Israël avec lui, offrirent des sacrifices devant le Seigneur.
63 And king Solomon offered for the sacrifices of peace-offering which he sacrificed to the Lord, two and twenty thousand oxen, and hundred and twenty thousand sheep: and the king and all the children of Israel dedicated the house of the Lord.
Quant aux sacrifices de Salomon, les victimes rémunératoires qu’il immola au Seigneur consistaient en vingt-deux mille taureaux et cent vingt mille brebis. Ainsi fut inaugurée la maison du Seigneur par le roi et tous les enfants d’Israël.
64 In that day the king consecrated the middle of the court in the front of the house of the Lord; for there he offered the whole burnt offering, and the sacrifices, and the fat of the peace-offerings, because the brazen altar which was before the Lord [was too] little to bear the whole burnt offering and the sacrifices of peace-offerings.
Ce jour-là, le roi consacra l’intérieur du parvis, qui s’étend devant la maison du Seigneur, pour qu’il pût y offrir les holocaustes, les oblations et les parties grasses des rémunératoires; car l’autel d’airain placé devant le Seigneur était trop petit pour contenir à la fois holocaustes, oblations et parties grasses des rémunératoires.
65 And Solomon kept the feast in that day, and all Israel with him, even a great assembly from the entering in of Hemath to the river of Egypt, before the Lord our God in the house which he built, eating and drinking, and rejoicing before the Lord our God seven days.
En ce temps-là, Salomon célébra la fête, et avec lui tout Israël, foule considérable accourue depuis la région d’Hémath jusqu’au torrent d’Egypte, en présence de l’Eternel, notre Dieu, sept jours et encore sept jours, ensemble quatorze jours.
66 And on the eighth day he sent away the people: and they blessed the king, and each departed to his tabernacle rejoicing, and [their] heart [was] glad because of the good things which the Lord had done to his servant David, and to Israel his people.
Le huitième jour, il congédia le peuple, qui bénit le roi; et ils rentrèrent dans leurs foyers, heureux et le cœur réjoui de toutes les grâces dont Dieu avait comblé David, son serviteur, et Israël, son peuple.
