Chronicles I 10
1 Now the Philistines warred against Israel; and they fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gelbue.
Filistrene stred mot Israel, og Israels menn flyktet for filistrene, og det lå mange falne på Gilboa-fjellet.
2 And the Philistines pursued after Saul, and after his sons; and the Philistines struck Jonathan, and Aminadab, and Melchisue, sons of Saul.
Og filistrene var like i hælene på Saul og hans sønner, og de drepte Jonatan og Abinadab og Malkisua, Sauls sønner.
3 And the battle prevailed against Saul, and the archers hit him with bows and arrows, and they were wounded of the bows.
Og striden blev hård der hvor Saul stod; og bueskytterne kom over ham, og han blev grepet av redsel for skytterne.
4 And Saul said to his armor-bearer, Draw your sword, and pierce me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and mock me. But his armor-bearer would not, for he was greatly afraid: so Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.
Da sa Saul til sin våbensvenn: Dra ditt sverd og gjennembor mig med det, så ikke disse uomskårne skal komme og fare ille med mig! Men våbensvennen vilde ikke; han var for redd. Da tok Saul sitt sverd og styrtet sig i det.
5 And his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, and he also fell upon his sword.
Og da våbensvennen så at Saul var død, styrtet også han sig i sitt sverd og døde.
6 So Saul died, and his three sons on that day, and all his family died at the same time.
Således døde Saul og hans tre sønner og hele hans hus; de døde alle sammen.
7 And all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, and they left their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came and lived in them.
Og da alle israelittene i dalen så at de var flyktet, og at Saul og hans sønner var døde, forlot de sine byer og flyktet; og filistrene kom og bosatte sig i dem.
8 And it came to pass on the next [day] that the Philistines came to strip the slain, and they found Saul and his sons fallen on mount Gelbue.
Dagen efter kom filistrene for å plyndre de falne; da fant de Saul og hans sønner liggende på Gilboa-fjellet.
9 And they stripped him, and took his head, and his armor, and sent them into the land of the Philistines round about, to proclaim the glad tidings to their idols, and to the people.
De plyndret ham og tok hans hode og hans våben og sendte bud rundt omkring i filistrenes land for å forkynne det glade budskap for sine avguder og for folket.
10 And they put their armor in the house of their god, and they put his head in the house of Dagon.
Og hans våben la de i sin guds hus, og hans hjerneskall hengte de op i Dagons hus.
11 And all the dwellers in Galaad heard of all that the Philistines had done to Saul and to Israel.
Da hele Jabes i Gilead fikk høre alt det filistrene hadde gjort med Saul,
12 And all the mighty men rose up from Galaad, and they took the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabis, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabis, and fasted seven days.
drog alle våbenføre menn avsted og tok Sauls og hans sønners kropper og førte dem til Jabes; og de begravde deres ben under terebinten i Jabes og holdt faste i syv dager.
13 So Saul died for his transgressions, wherein he transgressed against God, against the word of the Lord, forasmuch as he kept [it] not, because Saul enquired of a wizard to seek [counsel], and Samuel the prophet answered him:
Således døde Saul for den troløshets skyld som han hadde vist mot Herren, fordi han ikke hadde holdt sig efter Herrens ord, og likeledes fordi han hadde søkt til dødningemanere for å spørre dem til råds.
14 and he sought not the Lord: so he killed him, and turned the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.
Men han spurte ikke Herren; derfor lot han ham dø og førte kongedømmet over til David, Isais sønn.
