< Chronicles I 10 >

1 Now the Philistines warred against Israel; and they fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gelbue.
The Philistines attacked Israel and all the Israelites soldiers ran away from them. Many Israelites were cut down on Mount Gilboa.
2 And the Philistines pursued after Saul, and after his sons; and the Philistines struck Jonathan, and Aminadab, and Melchisue, sons of Saul.
The Philistines chased down Saul and his sons. The killed Saul's sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua.
3 And the battle prevailed against Saul, and the archers hit him with bows and arrows, and they were wounded of the bows.
The battle raged intensely around Saul. The enemy archers saw where he was, and they wounded him.
4 And Saul said to his armor-bearer, Draw your sword, and pierce me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and mock me. But his armor-bearer would not, for he was greatly afraid: so Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.
Saul told his armor bearer, “Take out your sword and kill me before these heathen come and torment me.” But his armor bearer refused—he was too afraid to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
5 And his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, and he also fell upon his sword.
When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died.
6 So Saul died, and his three sons on that day, and all his family died at the same time.
So Saul and three of his sons died there, along with his royal line.
7 And all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, and they left their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came and lived in them.
When all the Israelites in the valley saw that their army had run away, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their towns and they also ran away. The Philistines came and occupied them.
8 And it came to pass on the next [day] that the Philistines came to strip the slain, and they found Saul and his sons fallen on mount Gelbue.
The following day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they discovered the bodies of Saul and his sons on Mount Gilboa.
9 And they stripped him, and took his head, and his armor, and sent them into the land of the Philistines round about, to proclaim the glad tidings to their idols, and to the people.
They stripped him, cut off his head, and took his armor. Then they sent the news throughout the land of Philistia, to their idols and their people.
10 And they put their armor in the house of their god, and they put his head in the house of Dagon.
They put Saul's armor in the temple of their idols and fixed his head to the temple of Dagon.
11 And all the dwellers in Galaad heard of all that the Philistines had done to Saul and to Israel.
However, when everyone in Jabesh-gilead heard everything the Philistines had done to Saul,
12 And all the mighty men rose up from Galaad, and they took the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabis, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabis, and fasted seven days.
all their fighting men went and recovered the bodies of Saul and his sons. They brought them back and buried them under the large tree in Jabesh. Then they fasted for seven days.
13 So Saul died for his transgressions, wherein he transgressed against God, against the word of the Lord, forasmuch as he kept [it] not, because Saul enquired of a wizard to seek [counsel], and Samuel the prophet answered him:
Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord. He did not keep the Lord's commands, and he also went to consult a medium.
14 and he sought not the Lord: so he killed him, and turned the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.
He did not consult the Lord, so the Lord put him to death and he handed over the kingship to David, son of Jesse.
