< Proverbs 23 >
1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what [is] before thee:
Ka ibedo mondo ichiem gi ruoth, non maber gima ni e nyimi,
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou [be] a man given to appetite.

3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they [are] deceitful meat.
Kik igomb chiembe mamit, nimar chiemono en mar wuondruok.
4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
Kik iwe tich bari ndasi ni mondo ibed ja-mwandu, bed gi rieko mondo iritri.
5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for [riches] certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
Ngʼi mwandu mana matin nono, to bangʼe gidhi, nimar adiera gibiro bedo gi bwombe, kendo gifu gidhi e kor polo ka ongo.
6 Eat thou not the bread of [him that hath] an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
Kik icham chiemb jagwondo, kik igomb chiembe mamit,
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so [is] he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart [is] not with thee.
nimar en ngʼat mosiko paro nengo mochul. Owachoni niya, “Chiem kendo methi,” to chunye ok ni kodi.
8 The morsel [which] thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
Ibiro ngʼogo mano matin mane ichamo kendo ibiro bedo ni iketho kindeni kuom pwoch mipuoyego.
9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
Kik iwuo ne ngʼat mofuwo, nikech obiro chayo rieko mag wechegi.
10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
Kik igol kidi mar kiewo machon, kata ima nyithindo maonge wuone puothegi;
11 For their redeemer [is] mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.
nimar Jal moritogi en ratego; obiro chwakogi e kindi kodgi.
12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
Ket chunyi ne puonj to iti ne weche mag ngʼeyo.
13 Withhold not correction from the child: for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
Kik itamri kumo nyathi; nimar chwat ok nyal nege.
14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell. (Sheol )
Kikumo nyathi kod kede to obiro reso chunye aa e tho. (Sheol )
15 My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
Wuoda, ka chunyi riek, eka chunya biro bedo mamor,
16 Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
chunya ma iye nobed mamor ka lewi wacho gima nikare.
17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but [be thou] in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
Kik ibed gi nyiego e chunyi nikech joricho; to kinde duto bedi gi dwaro mar luoro Jehova Nyasaye moloyo.
18 For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
Adier, ka itimo kamano to inibed gi geno e ndalo mabiro, kendo genoni ok nongʼad oko.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
Wuoda, winja, eka inibed mariek, kendo ket chunyi e yo moriere tir.
20 Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
Kik iriwri gi jogo ma madho kongʼo mangʼeny kata jowuoro mohero ringʼo,
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe [a man] with rags.
nimar jomer kod jowuoro bedo jochan, kendo nongʼno rwakogi gi lewni moti.
22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Winj wuonu, nikech en ema nonywoli, kendo kik icha minu ka oti.
23 Buy the truth, and sell [it] not; [also] wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
Adiera gi rieko gi puonjruok kod ngʼeyo tiend wach ema nyaka iyudi, kata dabed ni ingʼiewogi gi nengo matek.
24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise [child] shall have joy of him.
Wuon ngʼat makare nigi mor maduongʼ; ngʼatno man-gi wuowi mariek obedo mamor kode.
25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.
Mad wuonu gi minu bed mamor; mad minu mane onywoli bed gi ilo.
26 My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
Wuoda, miya chunyi, kendo ket wengegi orit yorena,
27 For a whore [is] a deep ditch; and a strange woman [is] a narrow pit.
nimar dhako ma jachode en bur matut, to dhako mabayo en soko madiny.
28 She also lieth in wait as [for] a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.
Ka jamecho obuto korito, to omedo keto ji ma ok jo-adiera mangʼeny e kind ji.
29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
En ngʼa man-gi masira? En ngʼa man-gi lit? En ngʼa man-gi lweny? En ngʼa man-gi ngʼur? En ngʼa man-gi adhonde ma ok owinjore? En ngʼa man-gi wangʼ makwar motimo remo?
30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
Jogo madeko oko ka kongʼo, madhi mondo gibil kongʼo mokik mayoreyore.
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, [when] it moveth itself aright.
Kik ingʼi kongʼo kochiek mowalo, ka obabni e kikombe, ka omadhore mos kolor piny!
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
Bangʼe to okecho ka thuol kendo oketo kwiri kaka fu.
33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
Wengeni biro neno gik mayoreyore to pachi paro gik morundore.
34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
Ibiro chalo ngʼat ma nindo e nam mar apaka matek, ka inindo ewi apaka.
35 They have stricken me, [shalt thou say, and] I was not sick; they have beaten me, [and] I felt [it] not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
Ibiro wacho niya, “Gigoya, to ok ahinyra! Gigoya, to ok awinji! Karangʼo ma abiro chiewoe mondo adog ameth kendo?”
