Proverbs 20
1 Wine [is] a mocker, strong drink [is] raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
मय मसख़रा और शराब हंगामा करने वाली है, और जो कोई इनसे फ़रेब खाता है, 'अक़्लमन्द नहीं।
2 The fear of a king [is] as the roaring of a lion: [whoso] provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own soul.
बादशाह का रो'ब शेर की गरज की तरह है: जो कोई उसे गु़स्सा दिलाता है, अपनी जान से बदी करता है।
3 [It is] an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
झगड़े से अलग रहने में आदमी की 'इज्ज़त है, लेकिन हर एक बेवक़ूफ़ झगड़ता रहता है,
4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; [therefore] shall he beg in harvest, and [have] nothing.
काहिल आदमी जाड़े की वजह हल नहीं चलाता; इसलिए फ़सल काटने के वक़्त वह भीक माँगेगा, और कुछ न पाएगा।
5 Counsel in the heart of man [is like] deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
आदमी के दिल की बात गहरे पानी की तरह है, लेकिन समझदार आदमी उसे खींच निकालेगा।
6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
अक्सर लोग अपना अपना एहसान जताते हैं, लेकिन वफ़ादार आदमी किसको मिलेगा?
7 The just [man] walketh in his integrity: his children [are] blessed after him.
रास्तरौ सादिक़ के बा'द, उसके बेटे मुबारक होते हैं।
8 A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
बादशाह जो तख़्त — ए — 'अदालत पर बैठता है, खुद देखकर हर तरह की बदी को फटकता है।
9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
कौन कह सकता है कि मैंने अपने दिल को साफ़ कर लिया है; और मैं अपने गुनाह से पाक हो गया हूँ?
10 Divers weights, [and] divers measures, both of them [are] alike abomination to the LORD.
दो तरह के तौल बाट और दो तरह के पैमाने, इन दोनों से ख़ुदा को नफ़रत है।
11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work [be] pure, and whether [it be] right.
बच्चा भी अपनी हरकतों से पहचाना जाता है, कि उसके काम नेक — ओ — रास्त हैं कि नहीं।
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.
सुनने वाले कान और देखने वाली आँख दोनों को ख़ुदावन्द ने बनाया है।
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
ख़्वाब दोस्त न हो, कहीं ऐसा तू कंगाल हो जाए; अपनी आँखें खोल कि तू रोटी से सेर होगा।
14 [It is] naught, [it is] naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
ख़रीदार कहता है, रद्दी है, रद्दी, लेकिन जब चल पड़ता है तो फ़ख़्र करता है।
15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge [are] a precious jewel.
ज़र — ओ — मरजान की तो कसरत है, लेकिन बेशबहा सरमाया 'इल्म वाले होंट हैं।
16 Take his garment that is surety [for] a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
जो बेगाने का ज़ामिन हो, उसके कपड़े छीन ले, और जो अजनबी का ज़ामिन हो, उससे कुछ गिरवी रख ले।
17 Bread of deceit [is] sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
दग़ा की रोटी आदमी को मीठी लगती है, लेकिन आख़िर को उसका मुँह कंकरों से भरा जाता है।
18 [Every] purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
हर एक काम मश्वरत से ठीक होता है, और तू नेक सलाह लेकर जंग कर।
19 He that goeth about [as] a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
जो कोई लुतरापन करता फिरता है, राज़ खोलता है; इसलिए तू मुँहफट से कुछ वास्ता न रख
20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
जो अपने बाप या अपनी माँ पर ला'नत करता है, उसका चिराग़ गहरी तारीकी में बुझाया जाएगा।
21 An inheritance [may be] gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
अगरचे 'इब्तिदा में मीरास यकलख़्त हासिल हो, तो भी उसका अन्जाम मुबारक न होगा।
22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; [but] wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
तू यह न कहना, कि मैं बदी का बदला लूँगा। ख़ुदावन्द की आस रख और वह तुझे बचाएगा।
23 Divers weights [are] an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance [is] not good.
दो तरह के तौल बाट से ख़ुदावन्द को नफ़रत है, और दग़ा के तराजू ठीक नहीं।
24 Man’s goings [are] of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?
आदमी की रफ़्तार ख़ुदावन्द की तरफ़ से है, लेकिन इंसान अपनी राह को क्यूँकर जान सकता है?
25 [It is] a snare to the man [who] devoureth [that which is] holy, and after vows to make enquiry.
जल्द बाज़ी से किसी चीज़ को मुक़द्दस ठहराना, और मिन्नत मानने के बाद दरियाफ़्त करना, आदमी के लिए फंदा है।
26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
'अक़्लमन्द बादशाह शरीरों को फटकता है, और उन पर दावने का पहिया फिरवाता है।
27 The spirit of man [is] the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
आदमी का ज़मीर ख़ुदावन्द का चिराग़ है: जो उसके तमाम अन्दरूनी हाल को दरियाफ़्त करता है।
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.
शफ़क़त और सच्चाई बादशाह की निगहबान हैं, बल्कि शफ़क़त ही से उसका तख़्त क़ाईम रहता है।
29 The glory of young men [is] their strength: and the beauty of old men [is] the gray head.
जवानों का ज़ोर उनकी शौकत है, और बूढ़ों के सफ़ेद बाल उनकी ज़ीनत हैं।
30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so [do] stripes the inward parts of the belly.
कोड़ों के ज़ख़्म से बदी दूर होती है, और मार खाने से दिल साफ़ होता।
