Proverbs 18
1 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh [and] intermeddleth with all wisdom.
Un homme qui s'isole poursuit l'égoïsme, et défie tout jugement sain.
2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.
L'insensé ne prend pas plaisir à comprendre, mais seulement en révélant sa propre opinion.
3 When the wicked cometh, [then] cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.
Quand vient la méchanceté, vient aussi le mépris, et avec la honte vient le déshonneur.
4 The words of a man’s mouth [are as] deep waters, [and] the wellspring of wisdom [as] a flowing brook.
Les paroles de la bouche d'un homme sont comme des eaux profondes. La fontaine de la sagesse est comme un ruisseau qui coule.
5 [It is] not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.
Il n'est pas bon d'être partial à l'égard du visage des méchants, ni de priver l'innocent de justice.
6 A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.
Les lèvres de l'insensé se disputent, et sa bouche invite aux coups.
7 A fool’s mouth [is] his destruction, and his lips [are] the snare of his soul.
La bouche de l'insensé est sa perte, et ses lèvres sont un piège pour son âme.
8 The words of a talebearer [are] as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
Les paroles d'une commère sont comme des friandises: ils descendent dans les parties les plus intimes d'une personne.
9 He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.
Celui qui se relâche dans son travail est un frère pour celui qui est un maître de la destruction.
10 The name of the LORD [is] a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
Le nom de Yahvé est une tour forte: les justes courent vers lui, et sont en sécurité.
11 The rich man’s wealth [is] his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.
La richesse du riche est sa ville forte, comme un mur infranchissable dans sa propre imagination.
12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour [is] humility.
Avant la destruction, le cœur de l'homme est orgueilleux, mais avant l'honneur, il y a l'humilité.
13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth [it], it [is] folly and shame unto him.
Celui qui répond avant d'avoir entendu, c'est de la folie et de la honte pour lui.
14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?
L'esprit d'un homme le soutient dans la maladie, mais un esprit écrasé, qui peut le supporter?
15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
Le cœur de celui qui sait discerner obtient la connaissance. L'oreille du sage cherche la connaissance.
16 A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.
Le don d'un homme fait de la place pour lui, et l'amène devant de grands hommes.
17 [He that is] first in his own cause [seemeth] just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.
Celui qui plaide le premier sa cause semble avoir raison- jusqu'à ce qu'un autre vienne l'interroger.
18 The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty.
Le lot règle les litiges, et sépare les plus forts.
19 A brother offended [is harder to be won] than a strong city: and [their] contentions [are] like the bars of a castle.
Un frère offensé est plus difficile qu'une ville fortifiée. Les litiges sont comme les barreaux d'une forteresse.
20 A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; [and] with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.
L'estomac d'un homme est rempli du fruit de sa bouche. Il est satisfait de la récolte de ses lèvres.
21 Death and life [are] in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
La mort et la vie sont au pouvoir de la langue; ceux qui l'aiment mangeront son fruit.
22 [Whoso] findeth a wife findeth a good [thing], and obtaineth favour of the LORD.
Celui qui trouve une femme trouve une bonne chose, et obtient la faveur de Yahvé.
23 The poor useth intreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.
Les pauvres implorent la pitié, mais les riches répondent durement.
24 A man [that hath] friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend [that] sticketh closer than a brother.
Un homme qui a beaucoup de compagnons peut être ruiné, mais il y a un ami qui est plus proche qu'un frère.
