Matthew 5
1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
Jésus, voyant cette foule, monta sur la montagne, et lorsqu’il se fut assis, ses disciples s’approchèrent de lui.
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
Alors, ouvrant sa bouche, il se mit à les enseigner, en disant:
3 Blessed [are] the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
« Heureux les pauvres en esprit, car le royaume des cieux est à eux!
4 Blessed [are] they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Heureux ceux qui sont doux, car ils posséderont la terre!
5 Blessed [are] the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Heureux ceux qui pleurent, car ils seront consolés!
6 Blessed [are] they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Heureux ceux qui ont faim et soif de la justice, car ils seront rassasiés!
7 Blessed [are] the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Heureux les miséricordieux, car ils obtiendront miséricorde!
8 Blessed [are] the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Heureux ceux qui ont le cœur pur, car ils verront Dieu!
9 Blessed [are] the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Heureux les pacifiques, car ils seront appelés enfants de Dieu!
10 Blessed [are] they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Heureux ceux qui souffrent persécution pour la justice, car le royaume des cieux est à eux!
11 Blessed are ye, when [men] shall revile you, and persecute [you], and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Heureux êtes-vous, lorsqu’on vous insultera, qu’on vous persécutera, et qu’on dira faussement toute sorte de mal contre vous, à cause de moi.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great [is] your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
Réjouissez-vous et soyez dans l’allégresse, car votre récompense est grande dans les cieux: c’est ainsi qu’ils ont persécuté les prophètes qui ont été avant vous.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Vous êtes le sel de la terre. Si le sel s’affadit, avec quoi lui rendra-t-on sa saveur? Il n’est plus bon à rien qu’à être jeté dehors et foulé aux pieds par les hommes.
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Vous êtes la lumière du monde. Une ville située au sommet d’une montagne ne peut être cachée;
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
et on n’allume pas une lampe pour la mettre sous le boisseau, mais sur le chandelier, et elle éclaire tous ceux qui sont dans la maison.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Qu’ainsi votre lumière brille devant les hommes, afin que, voyant vos bonnes œuvres, ils glorifient votre Père qui est dans les cieux.
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Ne pensez pas que je sois venu abolir la Loi ou les Prophètes; je ne suis pas venu les abolir, mais les accomplir.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Car, je vous le dis en vérité, jusqu’à ce que passent le ciel et la terre, un seul iota ou un seul trait de la Loi ne passera pas, que tout ne soit accompli.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them], the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Celui donc qui aura violé un de ces moindres commandements, et appris aux hommes à faire de même, sera le moindre dans le royaume des cieux; mais celui qui les aura pratiqués et enseignés, sera grand dans le royaume des cieux.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Car je vous dis que si votre justice ne surpasse celle des scribes et des Pharisiens, vous n’entrerez pas dans le royaume des cieux.
21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit aux anciens: « Tu ne tueras pas, et celui qui tuera mérite d’être puni par le tribunal. »
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. (Geenna g1067)
Et moi, je vous dis: Quiconque se met en colère contre son frère mérite d’être puni par le tribunal; et celui qui dira à son frère: Raca, mérite d’être puni par le Conseil; et celui qui lui dira: Fou, mérite d’être jeté dans la géhenne du feu. (Geenna g1067)
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
Si donc, lorsque tu présentes ton offrande à l’autel, tu te souviens que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi,
24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
laisse là ton offrande devant l’autel, et va d’abord te réconcilier avec ton frère; puis viens présenter ton offrande.
25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
Accorde-toi au plus tôt avec ton adversaire, pendant que vous allez ensemble au tribunal, de peur qu’il ne te livre au juge, que le juge ne te livre à l’appariteur, et que tu ne sois jeté en prison.
26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
En vérité, je te le dis, tu n’en sortiras pas que tu n’aies payé jusqu’à la dernière obole.
27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit: « Tu ne commettras pas d’adultère. »
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Et moi, je vous dis que quiconque regarde une femme avec convoitise, a déjà commis l’adultère avec elle, dans son cœur.
29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell. (Geenna g1067)
Si ton œil droit est pour toi une occasion de chute, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi; car il vaut mieux pour toi qu’un seul de tes membres périsse, et que ton corps tout entier ne soit pas jeté dans la géhenne. (Geenna g1067)

31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
Il a été dit aussi: « Quiconque renvoie sa femme, qu’il lui donne un acte de divorce. »
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
Et moi, je vous dis: Quiconque renvoie sa femme, hors le cas d’impudicité, la rend adultère; et quiconque épouse la femme renvoyée, commet un adultère.
33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
Vous avez encore appris qu’il a été dit aux anciens: « Tu ne te parjureras pas, mais tu t’acquitteras envers le Seigneur de tes serments. »
34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne:
Et moi, je vous dis de ne faire aucune sorte de serments: ni par le ciel, parce que c’est le trône de Dieu;
35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
ni par la terre, parce que c’est l’escabeau de ses pieds; ni par Jérusalem, parce que c’est la ville du grand Roi.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
Ne jure pas non plus par ta tête, parce que tu ne peux en rendre un seul cheveu blanc ou noir.
37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
Mais que votre langage soit: Cela est, cela n’est pas. Ce qui se dit de plus vient du Malin.
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit: « Œil pour œil et dent pour dent. »
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Et moi, je vous dis de ne pas tenir tête au méchant; mais si quelqu’un te frappe sur la joue droite, présente-lui encore l’autre.
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have [thy] cloke also.
Et à celui qui veut t’appeler en justice pour avoir ta tunique, abandonne encore ton manteau.
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
Et si quelqu’un veut t’obliger à faire mille pas, fais-en avec lui deux mille.
42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
Donne à qui te demande, et ne cherche pas à éviter celui qui veut te faire un emprunt.
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit: « Tu aimeras ton prochain, et tu haïras ton ennemi. »
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Et moi, je vous dis: Aimez vos ennemis, bénissez ceux qui vous maudissent, faites du bien à ceux qui vous haïssent, et priez pour ceux qui vous maltraitent et qui vous persécutent:
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
afin que vous soyez les enfants de votre Père qui est dans les cieux; car il fait lever son soleil sur les méchants et sur les bons, et descendre sa pluie sur les justes et sur les injustes.
46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
Si vous aimez ceux qui vous aiment, quelle récompense méritez-vous? Les publicains n’en font-ils pas autant?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more [than others]? do not even the publicans so?
Et si vous ne saluez que vos frères, que faites-vous d’extraordinaire? Les païens même n’en font-ils pas autant?
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
Vous donc, soyez parfaits comme votre Père céleste est parfait.
