Judges 1
1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
Sau khi Giô-suê qua đời, người Ít-ra-ên cầu hỏi Chúa Hằng Hữu: “Xin chỉ dạy chúng con, ai sẽ đi đánh người Ca-na-an trước nhất?”
2 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
Chúa Hằng Hữu đáp: “Giu-đa, Ta đã giao đất Ca-na-an vào tay họ.”
3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.
Người Giu-đa nói với anh em mình từ đại tộc Si-mê-ôn: “Xin hãy giúp chúng tôi đánh người Ca-na-an trong phần đất chúng tôi, rồi chúng tôi sẽ giúp anh em đánh chiếm phần đất của anh em.” Người Si-mê-ôn liền theo người Giu-đa.
4 And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
Người Giu-đa xuất trận, Chúa Hằng Hữu cho họ chiến thắng người Ca-na-an và người Phê-rết, giết 10.000 người ở Bê-xéc.
5 And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
Cũng tại Bê-xéc, họ đánh A-đô-ni Bê-xéc, người Ca-na-an, và người Phê-rết.
6 But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
Vua A-đô-ni Bê-xéc chạy trốn, bị quân Giu-đa đuổi theo bắt được, chặt đứt ngón tay cái và ngón chân cái của vua.
7 And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered [their meat] under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
A-đô-ni Bê-xéc nói: “Ta từng chặt ngón cái tay chân của bảy mươi vua, cho họ ăn thức ăn rơi rớt dưới bàn ta, ngày nay ta bị Đức Chúa Trời báo ứng.” Người ta giải vua lên Giê-ru-sa-lem, và vua chết tại đó.
8 Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
Người Giu-đa đánh chiếm Giê-ru-sa-lem, tàn sát dân rồi đốt thành.
9 And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
Sau đó, họ quay xuống phía nam, đánh người Ca-na-an sống trên rừng núi và trong đồng bằng.
10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before [was] Kirjath-arba: ) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
Giu-đa lại đánh người Ca-na-an ở Hếp-rôn (tên cũ là Ki-ri-át A-ra-ba), hạ các thành Sê-sai, A-hi-man, và Thanh-mai.
11 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before [was] Kirjath-sepher:
Từ đó, họ tiến đánh Đê-bia (tên cũ là Ki-ri-át Sê-phe).
12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
Ca-lép nói: “Tôi sẽ gả con gái tôi là Ạc-sa cho người nào có công đánh chiếm Ki-ri-át Sê-phe.”
13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
Ốt-ni-ên, con của Kê-na, em Ca-lép, lập công đầu, chiếm thành, và được Ca-lép gả con gái là Ạc-sa cho người làm vợ.
14 And it came to pass, when she came [to him], that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off [her] ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?
Khi Ạc-sa đã lấy Ốt-ni-ên, nàng có giục chồng xin cha mình một sở ruộng. Lúc sắp lên đường theo chồng, nàng xuống lừa. Thấy thế, Ca-lép hỏi: “Con muốn gì?”
15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.
Nàng thưa: “Xin cho con một ân huệ. Vì cha đã cho con vùng đất Nê-ghép khô cằn, xin cha cho con thêm mấy suối nước nữa.” Ca-lép cho nàng các suối nước thượng và hạ.
16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which [lieth] in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
Con cháu của ông gia Môi-se, là người Kê-nít, từ thành Cây Chà Là dời đến sống chung với người Giu-đa trong miền đồng hoang Giu-đa, phía nam A-rát.
17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
Người Giu-đa đi cùng với người Si-mê-ôn, đánh và tận diệt người Ca-na-an ở Xê-phát. Vì thế thành này được gọi là Họt-ma.
18 Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.
Người Giu-đa còn chiếm Ga-xa, Ách-ca-lôn, Éc-rôn, và các thôn ấp phụ cận của thành ấy.
19 And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out [the inhabitants of] the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
Chúa Hằng Hữu giúp người Giu-đa đánh chiếm toàn miền núi rừng. Tuy nhiên, họ không đuổi được dân ở đồng bằng vì dân này có xe sắt.
20 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.
Theo lệnh Môi-se đã truyền, Hếp-rôn được giao cho Ca-lép. Ông đánh đuổi ba con trai của A-nác đi.
21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
Người Bên-gia-min không đuổi người Giê-bu ở Giê-ru-sa-lem; nên đến nay, dân này vẫn còn ở đó, sống chung với người Bên-gia-min.
22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el: and the LORD [was] with them.
Nhà Giô-sép cũng tiến đánh Bê-tên và được Chúa Hằng Hữu phù hộ.
23 And the house of Joseph sent to descry Beth-el. (Now the name of the city before [was] Luz.)
Trước khi đánh Bê-tên (tên cũ là Lu-xơ), họ sai người do thám.
24 And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.
Các thám tử gặp một người ở trong thành đi ra, liền điều đình với người này: “Nếu anh chỉ cho chúng tôi lối vào thành, chúng tôi sẽ thương xót cho anh.”
25 And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
Người này chỉ cho họ lối vào thành. Giô-sép tiêu diệt dân trong thành, nhưng tha cho cả nhà người kia sống.
26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which [is] the name thereof unto this day.
Người ấy đem gia đình chạy qua đất của người Hê-tít, xây lên một thành để ở, đặt tên là Lu-xơ, và cho đến nay, tên thành vẫn không đổi.
27 Neither did Manasseh drive out [the inhabitants of] Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
Đại tộc Ma-na-se không đuổi người trong các thành Bết-sê-an, Tha-a-nác, Đô-rơ, Íp-lê-am, Mê-ghi-đô, và trong các thôn ấp phụ cận của các thành ấy đi, vì người Ca-na-an trong những nơi này quyết ở lại.
28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
Về sau, khi người Ít-ra-ên hùng mạnh hơn, liền bắt người Ca-na-an làm nô dịch, chứ không đuổi họ đi.
29 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
Người Ép-ra-im cũng không đuổi người Ca-na-an ở Ghê-xe đi, nên họ ở lại đó, sống chung với người Ép-ra-im.
30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.
Đại tộc Sa-bu-luân không đuổi dân thành Kít-rôn và Na-ha-lô đi, nên người Ca-na-an ở lại làm việc nô dịch.
31 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:
Đại tộc A-se không đuổi dân thành A-cô, Si-đôn, Ách-láp, Ách-xíp, Hên-ba, A-phéc, và Rê-hốp đi;
32 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.
vậy, người A-se sống chung với người Ca-na-an, thổ dân của các thành ấy.
33 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries unto them.
Người Nép-ta-li không đuổi dân thành Bết-sê-mết và Bết-a-nát đi, nhưng sống chung với dân Ca-na-an là dân bản địa. Tuy nhiên, dân Bết Sê-mết và dân Bết A-nát phải phục dịch bộ tộc Nép-ta-li.
34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:
Người Đan không chinh phục được miền đồng bằng, phải dừng lại ở miền núi rừng, vì người A-mô-rít kháng cự.
35 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.
Người A-mô-rít cố thủ các thành Ha-hê-rết, A-gia-lôn, và Sa-an-bim, nhưng họ bị nhà Giô-sép chế ngự, bắt làm nô lệ.
36 And the coast of the Amorites [was] from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
Biên giới đất A-mô-rít chạy từ dốc Ạc-ráp-bim, từ Sê-la trở lên.
