Job 35

1 Elihu spake moreover, and said,

Ainsi Eliu dit encore ceci:

2 Thinkest thou this to be right, [that] thou saidst, My righteousness [is] more than God’s?

Est-ce qu’il te semble que ta pensée était équitable, quand tu as dit: Je suis plus juste que Dieu?

3 For thou saidst, What advantage will it be unto thee? [and], What profit shall I have, [if I be cleansed] from my sin?

Car tu as dit: Ce qui est juste ne vous plaît pas: ou quel avantage retirez-vous, si je pèche?

4 I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee.

C’est pourquoi je répondrai à tes discours et à tes amis avec toi.

5 Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds [which] are higher than thou.

Regarde en haut le ciel, et vois: et contemple combien la région de l’air est plus haute que toi.

6 If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or [if] thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him?

Si tu pèches, en quoi lui nuiras-tu? et si tes iniquités se multiplient, que feras-tu en cela contre lui?

7 If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand?

Mais si tu as agi justement, que lui donneras-tu, ou que recevra-t-il de ta main?

8 Thy wickedness [may hurt] a man as thou [art; ] and thy righteousness [may profit] the son of man.

C’est à un homme semblable à toi que nuira ton impiété, et c’est au fils d’un homme que ta justice servira.

9 By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make [the oppressed] to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.

À cause de la multitude des calomniateurs, ils crieront; et ils se lamenteront à cause de la violence du bras des tyrans.

10 But none saith, Where [is] God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;

Et aucun d’eux n’a dit: Où est Dieu, qui m’a fait, qui inspire des cantiques pendant la nuit,

11 Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?

Qui nous donne plus d’instruction qu’aux bêtes de la terre, et plus d’intelligence qu’aux oiseaux du ciel?

12 There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.

Alors ils crieront, et il ne les exaucera pas, à cause de l’orgueil des méchants.

13 Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.

Ce n’est donc pas en vain que Dieu écoulera leurs cris; et le Tout-Puissant considérera avec attention la cause de chacun.

14 Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, [yet] judgment [is] before him; therefore trust thou in him.

Même lorsque tu as dit: Il ne considère point; juge-toi toi-même en sa présence, et attends-le.

15 But now, because [it is] not [so], he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth [it] not in great extremity:

Car ce n’est pas maintenant qu’il exerce sa fureur, et qu’il lire une grande vengeance du crime.

16 Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge.

C’est donc en vain que Job ouvre sa bouche, et que, sans science, il multiplie des paroles.
