Jeremiah 21
1 The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying,
La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de l'Éternel, quand le roi Sédécias envoya vers lui Paschur, fils de Malchija, et Sophonie, fils de Mahaséïa, le sacrificateur, pour lui dire:
2 Enquire, I pray thee, of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that the LORD will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.
Consulte donc pour nous l'Éternel; car Nébucadnézar, roi de Babel, nous livre la guerre: peut-être l'Éternel fera-t-Il en notre faveur un miracle, tel que sont tous ses miracles, et l'éloignera-t-Il de nous.
3 Then said Jeremiah unto them, Thus shall ye say to Zedekiah:
Alors Jérémie leur dit: Ainsi parlez à Sédécias:
4 Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that [are] in your hands, wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon, and [against] the Chaldeans, which besiege you without the walls, and I will assemble them into the midst of this city.
Ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël: Voici, je ramènerai par une conversion les armes de guerre qui sont dans vos mains, et avec lesquelles vous combattez en dehors de vos murs le roi de Babel et les Chaldéens qui vous assiègent, et je les concentrerai dans l'enceinte de cette ville;
5 And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath.
et je vous combattrai de ma main étendue et d'un bras puissant, avec colère, et avec courroux, et avec une grande fureur;
6 And I will smite the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast: they shall die of a great pestilence.
et je frapperai les habitants de cette ville, et les hommes et les bêtes; une grande peste les fera mourir.
7 And afterward, saith the LORD, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that seek their life: and he shall smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy.
Et après cela, dit l'Éternel, je livrerai Sédécias, roi de Juda, et ses serviteurs, et le peuple et ceux qui survivront dans celte ville à la peste, à l'épée et à la famine, entre les mains de Nébucadnézar, roi de Babel, et entre les mains de leurs ennemis, et entre les mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, pour qu'il les frappe avec le tranchant de l'épée, et n'ait d'eux ni pitié, ni compassion, ni miséricorde.
8 And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.
Puis tu diras à ce peuple: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Voici, je vous propose le chemin de la vie, et le chemin de la mort;
9 He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.
quiconque restera dans cette ville, mourra par l'épée, la famine et la peste; mais quiconque sortira pour se rendre aux Chaldéens qui vous assiègent, vivra et aura son âme pour butin.
10 For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith the LORD: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.
Car je fixe mes regards sur cette ville pour faire du mal, et non pas du bien, dit l'Éternel; elle va être livrée entre les mains du roi de Babel, pour qu'il la brûle par le feu.
11 And touching the house of the king of Judah, [say], Hear ye the word of the LORD;
Et à la maison du roi de Juda: Écoutez la parole de l'Éternel,
12 O house of David, thus saith the LORD; Execute judgment in the morning, and deliver [him that is] spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my fury go out like fire, and burn that none can quench [it], because of the evil of your doings.
Maison de David! Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Rendez la justice dès le matin, et sauvez l'homme dépouillé des mains de l'oppresseur, de peur que ma colère n'éclate comme un feu et qu'elle ne brûle inextinguible, à cause de la méchanceté de vos actions.
13 Behold, I [am] against thee, O inhabitant of the valley, [and] rock of the plain, saith the LORD; which say, Who shall come down against us? or who shall enter into our habitations?
Voici, c'est à vous que j'en veux, habitants de la vallée, du rocher de la plaine, dit l'Éternel, à vous qui dites: Qui descendrait jusqu'à nous et qui pénétrerait dans nos maisons?
14 But I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith the LORD: and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall devour all things round about it.
Mais je vous châtierai conformément au fruit de vos œuvres, dit l'Éternel, et j'allumerai un feu dans votre forêt, pour qu'il dévore tous vos alentours.
