James 5
1 Go to now, [ye] rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon [you].
Vy, boháči, už teď plačte a naříkejte nad tím, co vás čeká.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
Nahromadili jste tolik potravin, že vám hnijí, vaše šatstvo žerou moli a vaše peníze ztrácejí na ceně. Chtěli jste si nashromáždit poklady, a zatím jste si navršili hranici, která při posledním soudu shoří i s vámi.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.
4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.
Mzda, o kterou jste ošidili dělníky najaté ke sklizni vašich polí, svědčí proti vám a nářek ženců dolehl k Božímu sluchu.
5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.
Váš život strávený v radovánkách a hýření se podobá vykrmování zvířat na porážku.
6 Ye have condemned [and] killed the just; [and] he doth not resist you.
Odsoudili jste a zabili nevinného, který se nebránil.
7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.
Bratři, čekejte trpělivě až přijde Pán. Vezměte si příklad z rolníka, který vytrvale čeká na vytouženou sklizeň, až uzraje po podzimních a jarních deštích.
8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.
Nedejte se zviklat a mějte jistotu v srdci, vždyť příchod Páně se blíží.
9 Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.
Bratři, nestěžujte si jeden na druhého, vždyť sami nejste lepší než ti, které odsuzujete. Nezapomeňte, že velký Soudce je již přede dveřmi a bude soudit i vás.
10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.
Za příklad trpělivosti si vezměte proroky, kteří trpěli proto, že vyřizovali Boží poselství.
11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.
Vážíme si těch, kteří vydrželi. Slyšeli jste o Jobově trpělivosti a vzpomeňte si, jak Bůh nakonec jeho utrpení obrátil k dobrému. Vidíte, jak je Pán plný soucitu a slitování.
12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and [your] nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.
Nehřešte tím, že si berete Boha za svědka svých řečí. Buďte tak pravdomluvní, aby každý mohl věřit vašemu prostému ano nebo ne.
13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
Prožívá někdo z vás těžkosti? Ať se modlí! Daří se někomu z vás dobře? Ať zpěvem chválí Boha!
14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
Sužuje-li někoho nemoc, ať pozve starší sboru, aby se za něho modlili a potírali ho olejem ve jménu Páně.
15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
Modlitba spojená s opravdovou vírou uzdraví nemocného, Pán ho povzbudí, a tíží-li ho svědomí, odpustí mu hříchy.
16 Confess [your] faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Vyznávejte si vzájemně své hříchy a modlete se jedni za druhé, abyste mohli být uzdraveni. Opravdová modlitba upřímně věřícího má velkou moc.
17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
Vzpomínáte si na Elijáše? Byl to člověk stejně křehký jako my, ale když se opravdově modlil, aby nepršelo, jeho modlitba byla vyslyšena – nesprchlo tři a půl roku.
18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
Potom se modlil znovu a tentokrát prosil za déšť. Také tato modlitba byla vyslyšena a země se po dešti opět zazelenala a dala úrodu.
19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;
Moji bratři, jestliže někdo zabloudí od pravdy a druhý ho přivede zpět,
20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.
zachrání jeho duši před zahynutím a pomůže mu získat plné odpuštění.
