James 4
1 From whence [come] wars and fightings among you? [come they] not hence, [even] of your lusts that war in your members?
D'où viennent les guerres et les combats parmi vous? Ne viennent-elles pas de vos plaisirs qui se disputent dans vos membres?
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
Vous convoitez, et vous n'avez pas. Vous tuez et convoitez, et vous ne pouvez pas obtenir. Vous vous battez et vous faites la guerre. Vous n'avez pas, parce que vous ne demandez pas.
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume [it] upon your lusts.
Vous demandez, et vous ne recevez pas, parce que vous demandez avec de mauvais motifs, afin de le dépenser pour vos plaisirs.
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
Vous, adultères et adultères, ne savez-vous pas que l'amitié avec le monde est une hostilité envers Dieu? Celui donc qui veut être l'ami du monde se rend ennemi de Dieu.
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
Ou bien pensez-vous que l'Écriture dit en vain: « L'Esprit qui vit en nous soupire jalousement »?
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
Mais il donne plus de grâce. C'est pourquoi il est dit: « Dieu résiste aux orgueilleux, mais il fait grâce aux humbles. »
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Soyez donc soumis à Dieu. Résistez au diable, et il fuira loin de vous.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse [your] hands, [ye] sinners; and purify [your] hearts, [ye] double minded.
Approchez-vous de Dieu, et il s'approchera de vous. Purifiez vos mains, pécheurs. Purifiez vos cœurs, vous qui êtes doubles d'esprit.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and [your] joy to heaviness.
Plaignez-vous, soyez dans le deuil et pleurez. Que vos rires se transforment en deuil et votre joie en tristesse.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
Humiliez-vous devant le Seigneur, et il vous élèvera.
11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of [his] brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
Ne parlez pas les uns contre les autres, frères. Celui qui parle contre un frère et qui juge son frère, parle contre la loi et juge la loi. Mais si tu juges la loi, tu n'es pas un pratiquant de la loi, mais un juge.
12 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
Un seul est le législateur, qui a le pouvoir de sauver et de détruire. Mais qui es-tu pour juger autrui?
13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
Viens maintenant, toi qui dis: « Aujourd'hui ou demain, allons dans cette ville, passons-y une année, faisons du commerce et faisons du profit. »
14 Whereas ye know not what [shall be] on the morrow. For what [is] your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
Pourtant, vous ne savez pas ce que sera votre vie demain. Car qu'est-ce que votre vie? Car vous êtes une vapeur qui paraît pour un peu de temps et qui s'évanouit ensuite.
15 For that ye [ought] to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
Car vous devriez dire: « Si le Seigneur le veut, nous vivrons tous deux, et nous ferons ceci ou cela. »
16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
Mais maintenant, vous vous glorifiez dans votre orgueil. Or, toute vantardise de ce genre est mauvaise.
17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth [it] not, to him it is sin.
Ainsi, celui qui sait qu'il faut faire le bien et qui ne le fait pas, celui-là commet un péché.
