Genesis 43
1 And the famine [was] sore in the land.
Cependant la famine pesai! violemment sur toute la terre.
2 And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.
Et les vivres qu’ils avaient apportés de l’Égypte, étant consommés, Jacob dit à ses fils: Retournez, et achetez-nous quelques provisions.
3 And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother [be] with you.
Juda répondit: Cet homme nous a fait une déclaration sous le sceau du serment, disant: Vous ne verrez point ma face si vous n’amenez votre frère le plus jeune avec vous.
4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food:
Si donc vous voulez l’envoyer avec nous, nous irons ensemble, et nous achèterons ce qui vous est nécessaire.
5 But if thou wilt not send [him], we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother [be] with you.
Mais si vous ne voulez pas, nous n’irons pas; car cet homme, comme souvent nous l’avons dit, nous a fait une déclaration, disant: Vous ne verrez point ma face, sans votre frère le plus jeune.
6 And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye [so] ill with me, [as] to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?
Israël leur dit: Pour mon malheur vous avez fait de manière que vous lui avez indiqué que vous aviez encore un frère.
7 And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, [Is] your father yet alive? have ye [another] brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?
Mais eux répondirent: Cet homme nous a interrogés par ordre sur notre famille: si notre père vivait, si nous avions un autre frère; et nous lui avons répondu conséquemment, selon ce qu’il avait demandé; est-ce que nous pouvions savoir qu’il dirait: Amenez votre frère avec vous?
8 And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, [and] also our little ones.
Juda aussi dit à son père: Envoyez l’enfant avec moi, afin que nous partions et que nous puissions vivre, et que nous ne mourions pas, nous et nos petits enfants.
9 I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:
C’est moi qui me charge de l’enfant; c’est à ma main que vous le redemanderez; si je ne le ramène, et si je ne vous le rends, je serai coupable envers vous à jamais.
10 For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time.
S’il n’était pas intervenu de délai, nous serions déjà revenus une seconde fois.
11 And their father Israel said unto them, If [it must be] so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:
Ainsi Israël leur père leur dit: S’il le faut ainsi, faites ce que vous voudrez; prenez des meilleurs fruits de ce pays-ci dans vos vases, et portez à cet homme en présent un peu de résine, de miel, de storax, de stacté, de térébinthe et d’amandes.
12 And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry [it] again in your hand; peradventure it [was] an oversight:
Portez aussi avec vous le double d’argent; et celui que vous avez trouvé dans vos sacs, reportez-le, de peur que cela n’ait été fait par méprise.
13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man:
Mais prenez aussi votre frère et allez vers cet homme.
14 And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved [of my children], I am bereaved.
Que mon Dieu tout-puissant vous le rende favorable, afin qu’il renvoie avec vous votre frère qu’il retient, et ce Benjamin; et moi, je serai comme privé d’enfants.
15 And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.
Ceux-ci prirent donc avec eux les présents, le double d’argent et Benjamin, et ils descendirent en Égypte et se présentèrent devant Joseph.
16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring [these] men home, and slay, and make ready; for [these] men shall dine with me at noon.
Lorsque Joseph les vit et Benjamin avec eux, il commanda à l’intendant de sa maison, disant: Fais entrer ces hommes dans la maison; tue des victimes, et apprête un festin; parce que c’est avec moi qu’ils doivent manger à midi.
17 And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph’s house.
Celui-ci fit ce qui lui avait été commandé, et il introduisit ces hommes dans la maison.
18 And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph’s house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.
Et là, épouvantés, ils se dirent mutuellement: C’est à cause de l’argent que nous avons rapporté précédemment dans nos sacs qu’il nous a fait entrer ici, pour déverser sur nous une fausse accusation, et nous réduire violemment en servitude, nous et nos ânes.
19 And they came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they communed with him at the door of the house,
C’est pourquoi, à la porte même, s’approchant de l’intendant de la maison,
20 And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food:
Ils dirent: Nous vous prions, seigneur, de nous écouter. Nous sommes déjà venus ici pour acheter des vivres;
21 And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, [every] man’s money [was] in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand.
Lesquels achetés, quand nous fûmes arrivés à l’hôtellerie, nous ouvrîmes nos sacs, et nous trouvâmes l’argent à l’entrée des sacs: nous l’avons rapporté maintenant dans tout son poids.
22 And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.
Mais nous avons rapporté aussi d’autre argent pour acheter ce qui nous est nécessaire. Nous ne savons pas qui a mis cet argent dans nos bourses.
23 And he said, Peace [be] to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.
Mais lui répondit: Paix avec vous! ne craignez point: votre Dieu et le Dieu de votre père vous a mis des trésors dans vos sacs, car l’argent que vous m’avez donné, c’est moi qui l’ai en bonne monnaie. Et il leur amena Siméon.
24 And the man brought the men into Joseph’s house, and gave [them] water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender.
Et les ayant introduits dans la maison, il leur apporta de l’eau, et ils lavèrent leurs pieds, et il donna à manger à leurs ânes.
25 And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there.
Or eux préparaient leurs présents, attendant que Joseph entrât sur le midi; car ils avaient appris que c’était là qu’ils devaient manger du pain.
26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which [was] in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.
Joseph donc entra dans sa maison, et ils lui offrirent les présents qu’ils tenaient en leurs mains, et ils se prosternèrent, inclinés vers la terre.
27 And he asked them of [their] welfare, and said, [Is] your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? [Is] he yet alive?
Mais Joseph, leur ayant rendu leur salut avec bonté, les interrogea, disant: Se porte-t-il bien, votre vieux père dont vous m’aviez parlé? vit-il encore?
28 And they answered, Thy servant our father [is] in good health, he [is] yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance.
Ceux-ci répondirent: Il se porte bien, votre serviteur notre père, il vit encore. Et s’étant profondément inclinés, ils se prosternèrent devant lui.
29 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, [Is] this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.
Or Joseph, levant les yeux, vit Benjamin son frère utérin, et dit: Celui-ci est votre jeune frère dont vous m’aviez parlé? Et de nouveau: Dieu, dit-il, te soit miséricordieux, mon fils!
30 And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought [where] to weep; and he entered into [his] chamber, and wept there.
Et il se retira précipitamment, car ses entrailles s’étaient émues sur son frère, et des larmes s’échappaient de ses yeux: entrant donc dans sa chambre il pleura.
31 And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread.
Puis, sortant de nouveau, le visage lavé, il se contint et dit: Servez des pains.
32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that [is] an abomination unto the Egyptians.
Les pains servis à part pour Joseph, à part pour ses frères, et à part pour les Égyptiens qui mangeaient ensemble (car il n’est pas permis aux Égyptiens démanger avec les Hébreux, et ils regardent comme profane un semblable repas),
33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another.
Ils s’assirent devant lui, le premier-né, selon son droit d’aînesse, et le plus jeune, selon son âge. Or ils étaient extrêmement surpris,
34 And he took [and sent] messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin’s mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.
En prenant les parts qu’ils avaient reçues de lui; car une part d’autant plus grande vint à Benjamin, qu’elle surpassait cinq autres parts. Ils burent donc et firent grande chère avec lui.
