Ezra 5

1 Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that [were] in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, [even] unto them.

Or Aggée, le prophète, et Zacharie, fils d’Addo, prophétisèrent, prophétisant aux Juifs qui étaient en Judée et à Jérusalem, au nom du Dieu d’Israël.

2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which [is] at Jerusalem: and with them [were] the prophets of God helping them.

Alors se levèrent Zorobabel, fils de Salathiel, et Josué, fils de Josédec, et ils commencèrent à bâtir le temple de Dieu à Jérusalem, et avec eux les prophètes de Dieu qui les aidaient.

3 At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?

Or, en ce temps-là, vinrent vers eux Thathanaï, qui était chef au-delà du fleuve, et Stharbuzanaï, et leurs conseillers, et c’est ainsi qu’ils leur dirent: Qui vous a donné le conseil de bâtir cette maison et de restaurer ses murs?

4 Then said we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building?

À quoi nous répondîmes en leur disant quels étaient les noms des hommes auteurs de cette construction.

5 But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this [matter].

Or l’œil de leur Dieu fut sur les anciens des Juifs, et ils ne purent les empêcher. Et il leur plut que l’affaire fût renvoyée à Darius, et qu’alors ils répondraient à cette accusation.

6 The copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and his companions the Apharsachites, which [were] on this side the river, sent unto Darius the king:

Copie de la lettre que Thathanaï, chef de la contrée au-delà du fleuve, et Stharbuzanaï et ses conseillers Arphasachéens, qui étaient au-delà du fleuve, envoyèrent à Darius, le roi.

7 They sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace.

La parole qu’ils lui avaient envoyée était écrite ainsi: À Darius, le roi, toute paix.

8 Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands.

Qu’il soit connu du roi que nous sommes allés dans la province de Judée, dans la maison du grand Dieu que l’on bâtit de pierres non polies et dont on pose les bois sur les murailles. Or cet ouvrage s’élève avec diligence et s’accroît entre leurs mains.

9 Then asked we those elders, [and] said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls?

Nous avons donc interrogé les vieillards, et c’est ainsi que nous leur avons dit: Qui vous a donné le pouvoir de bâtir cette maison et de rétablir ces murs?

10 We asked their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that [were] the chief of them.

Mais nous leur avons aussi demandé leurs noms, afin de vous les indiquer, et nous avons écrit les noms des hommes qui sont les princes parmi eux.

11 And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up.

Or ils nous ont répondu ces paroles, disant: Nous sommes serviteurs du Dieu du ciel et de la terre; nous bâtissons le temple qui était construit beaucoup d’années avant celles-ci, et que le grand roi d’Israël avait bâti et construit.

12 But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.

Mais après que nos pères eurent provoqué au courroux le Dieu au ciel, il les livra entre les mains de Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, Chaldéen; et il détruisit même cette maison, et transporta son peuple à Babylone.

13 But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon [the same] king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God.

Or, à la première année de Cyrus, roi de Babylone, le roi Cyrus publia un édit afin que cette maison de Dieu fût bâtie.

14 And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that [was] in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto [one], whose name [was] Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;

Et même les vases d’or et d’argent du temple de Dieu, que Nabuchodonosor avait enlevés du temple qui était à Jérusalem, et qu’il avait apportés dans le temple de Babylone, le roi Cyrus les tira du temple de Babylone, et ils furent donnés à un nommé Sassabasar, qu’il établit même prince.

15 And said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that [is] in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in his place.

Et il lui dit: Prends ces vases, et va, et mets-les dans le temple qui est à Jérusalem, et que la maison de Dieu soit bâtie en son lieu.

16 Then came the same Sheshbazzar, [and] laid the foundation of the house of God which [is] in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and [yet] it is not finished.

Alors donc ce Sassabasar vint, et posa les fondements du temple de Dieu à Jérusalem, et, depuis ce temps-là jusqu’à présent, on le bâtit, et il n’est pas encore achevé.

17 Now therefore, if [it seem] good to the king, let there be search made in the king’s treasure house, which [is] there at Babylon, whether it be [so], that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.

Maintenant donc, s’il semble bon au roi, qu’il recherche dans la bibliothèque du roi, qui est à Babylone, s’il a été ordonné par le roi Cyrus que la maison de Dieu serait rebâtie à Jérusalem, et qu’il nous envoie la volonté du roi sur cela.
