Exodus 23
1 Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.
"N’Accueille point un rapport mensonger. Ne sois pas complice d’un méchant, en servant de témoin à l’iniquité.
2 Thou shalt not follow a multitude to [do] evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest [judgment: ]
Ne suis point la multitude pour mal faire; et n’opine point, sur un litige, dans le sens de la majorité, pour faire fléchir le droit.
3 Neither shalt thou countenance a poor man in his cause.
Ne sois point partial pour le pauvre, dans son procès.
4 If thou meet thine enemy’s ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again.
"Si tu trouves le bœuf ou l’âne de ton ennemi, égaré, aie soin de le lui ramener.
5 If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him.
"Si tu vois l’âne de ton ennemi succomber sous sa charge, garde toi de l’abandonner; aide-lui au contraire à le décharger.
6 Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause.
"Ne fais pas fléchir le droit de ton prochain indigent, s’il a un procès.
7 Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.
Fuis la parole de mensonge et ne frappe point de mort celui qui est innocent et juste, car je n’absoudrais point le prévaricateur.
8 And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.
N’Accepte point de présents corrupteurs; car la corruption trouble la vue des clairvoyants et fausse la parole des justes.
9 Also thou shalt not oppress a stranger: for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
Tu ne vexeras point l’étranger. Vous connaissez, vous, le cœur de l’étranger, vous qui avez été étrangers dans le pays d’Égypte!
10 And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the fruits thereof:
Six années tu ensemenceras ta terre et en recueilleras le produit;
11 But the seventh [year] thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, [and] with thy oliveyard.
mais la septième, tu lui donneras du repos et en abandonneras les fruits, pour que les indigents de ton peuple en jouissent, le surplus pourra être consommé par les animaux des champs. Ainsi en useras-tu pour ta vigne et pour ton plant d’oliviers.
12 Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.
Six jours durant tu t’occuperas de tes travaux, mais au septième jour tu chômeras; afin que ton bœuf et ton âne se reposent, que puissent respirer le fils de ton esclave et l’étranger.
13 And in all [things] that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.
Attachez-vous scrupuleusement à tout ce que je vous ai prescrit. Ne mentionnez jamais le nom de divinités étrangères, qu’on ne l’entende point dans ta bouche!
14 Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year.
Trois fois l’an, tu célébreras des fêtes en mon honneur.
15 Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty: )
Et d’abord, tu observeras la fête des Azymes: durant sept jours tu mangeras des pains azymes, ainsi que je te l’ai ordonné, à l’époque du mois de la germination, car c’est alors que tu es sorti de l’Égypte et l’on ne paraîtra point devant ma face les mains vides.
16 And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, [which is] in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field.
Puis, la fête de la Moisson, fête des prémices de tes biens, que tu auras semés dans la terre; et la fête de l’Automne, au déclin de l’année, lorsque tu rentreras ta récolte des champs.
17 Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord GOD.
Trois fois par an, tous tes mâles paraîtront par-devant le Souverain, l’Éternel.
18 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning.
Tu ne verseras point, en présence du pain levé, le sang de mon sacrifice; et la graisse de mes victimes ne séjournera pas jusqu’au matin sans être offerte.
19 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother’s milk.
Les prémices nouvelles de ton sol, tu les apporteras dans la maison de l’Éternel ton Dieu. Tu ne feras point cuire un chevreau dans le lait de sa mère.
20 Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.
"Or, j’enverrai devant toi un mandataire, chargé de veiller sur ta marche et de te conduire au lieu que je t’ai destiné.
21 Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name [is] in him.
Sois circonspect à son égard et docile à sa voix; ne lui résiste point! Il ne pardonnerait pas votre rébellion, car ma divinité est en lui.
22 But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries.
Que si tu es toujours docile à sa voix, si tu accomplis toutes mes paroles, je serai l’ennemi de tes ennemis et je persécuterai tes persécuteurs.
23 For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off.
Lorsque mon mandataire, guidant tes pas, t’aura introduit chez l’Amorréen, le Héthéen, le Phérézéen, le Cananéen, le Hévéen, le Jébuséen et que je les aurai exterminés,
24 Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images.
ne te prosterne point devant leurs dieux, ne les sers point et n’imite point leurs rites; au contraire, tu dois les, renverser, tu dois briser leurs monuments.
25 And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.
Vous servirez uniquement l’Éternel votre Dieu; et il bénira ta nourriture et ta boisson et j’écarterai tout fléau du milieu de toi.
26 There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil.
"Nulle femme n’avortera, nulle ne sera stérile dans ton pays; je comblerai la mesure de tes jours.
27 I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee.
J’Enverrai ma terreur devant toi et je jetterai le trouble en toute population chez qui tu pénétreras et je mettrai tous tes ennemis en fuite devant toi.
28 And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.
Je te ferai précéder par le frelon, qui chassera le Hévéen, le Cananéen et le Héthéen de devant toi.
29 I will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee.
Je ne l’expulserai pas de devant toi en une seule année, car le pays deviendrait un désert et les bêtes sauvages se multiplieraient à tes dépens:
30 By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land.
je L’Expulserai de devant toi successivement, jusqu’à ce que, devenu nombreux, tu puisses occuper tout le pays.
31 And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee.
Je fixerai tes limites depuis la mer des Joncs jusqu’à la mer des Philistins et depuis le Désert jusqu’au Fleuve; car je livrerai en ta main les habitants de cette contrée et tu les chasseras de devant toi.
32 Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods.
Tu ne feras de pacte avec eux ni avec leurs divinités.
33 They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.
Qu’ils ne subsistent point sur ton territoire! Ils te feraient prévariquer contre moi; car tu adorerais leurs divinités et ce serait pour toi un écueil."
