Ecclesiastes 10
1 Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: [so doth] a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom [and] honour.
Μυίαι αποθνήσκουσαι κάμνουσι το μύρον του μυρεψού να βρωμά, να αναβράζη· και μικρά αφροσύνη ατιμάζει τον εν υπολήψει επί σοφία και τιμή.
2 A wise man’s heart [is] at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.
Η καρδία του σοφού είναι εν τη δεξιά αυτού· η δε καρδία του άφρονος εν τη αριστερά αυτού.
3 Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth [him], and he saith to every one [that] he [is] a fool.
Και έτι όταν ο άφρων περιπατή εν τη οδώ, λείπει σύνεσις αυτού και αναγγέλλει προς πάντας ότι είναι άφρων.
4 If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.
Εάν το πνεύμα του ηγεμόνος εγερθή εναντίον σου, μη αφήσης τον τόπον σου· διότι η γλυκύτης καταπαύει αμαρτίας μεγάλας.
5 There is an evil [which] I have seen under the sun, as an error [which] proceedeth from the ruler:
Είναι κακόν το οποίον είδον υπό τον ήλιον, λάθος, λέγω, προερχόμενον από του εξουσιαστού·
6 Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
ότι ο άφρων βάλλεται εις μεγάλας αξίας, οι δε πλούσιοι κάθηνται εν ταπεινώ τόπω.
7 I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
Είδον δούλους εφ' ίππων και άρχοντας περιπατούντας ως δούλους επί της γης.
8 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
Όστις σκάπτει λάκκον, θέλει πέσει εις αυτόν· και όστις χαλά φραγμόν, όφις θέλει δαγκάσει αυτόν.
9 Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; [and] he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.
Ο μετακινών λίθους θέλει βλαφθή υπ' αυτών· ο σχίζων ξύλα θέλει κινδυνεύσει εν αυτοίς.
10 If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom [is] profitable to direct.
Εάν ο σίδηρος αμβλυνθή και δεν ακονίση τις την κόψιν αυτού, πρέπει να προσθέση δύναμιν· η σοφία δε είναι ωφέλιμος προς διεύθυνσιν.
11 Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
Εάν ο όφις δαγκάνη χωρίς συριγμού, πλην και ο συκοφάντης καλήτερος δεν είναι.
12 The words of a wise man’s mouth [are] gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
Οι λόγοι του στόματος του σοφού είναι χάρις· τα δε χείλη του άφρονος θέλουσι καταπίει αυτόν.
13 The beginning of the words of his mouth [is] foolishness: and the end of his talk [is] mischievous madness.
Η αρχή των λόγων του στόματος αυτού είναι αφροσύνη· και το τέλος της ομιλίας αυτού κακή μωρία.
14 A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
Ο άφρων προσέτι πληθύνει λόγους, ενώ ο άνθρωπος δεν εξεύρει τι μέλλει γενέσθαι· και τις δύναται να απαγγείλη προς αυτόν τι θέλει είσθαι μετ' αυτόν;
15 The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
Ο μόχθος των αφρόνων απαυδίζει αυτούς, επειδή δεν εξεύρουσι να υπάγωσιν εις την πόλιν.
16 Woe to thee, O land, when thy king [is] a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
Ουαί εις σε, γη, της οποίας ο βασιλεύς είναι νέος, και οι άρχοντές σου τρώγουσι το πρωΐ
17 Blessed [art] thou, O land, when thy king [is] the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
Μακαρία συ, γη, της οποίας ο βασιλεύς είναι υιός ευγενών, και οι άρχοντές σου τρώγουσιν εν καιρώ προς ενίσχυσιν και ουχί προς μέθην
18 By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
Διά την πολλήν οκνηρίαν πίπτει η στέγασις· και διά την αργίαν των χειρών σταλάζει η οικία.
19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all [things].
Δι' ευθυμίαν κάμνουσι συμπόσια, και ο οίνος ευφραίνει τους ζώντας· το δε αργύριον αποκρίνεται εις πάντα.
20 Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
Μη καταρασθής τον βασιλέα μηδέ εν τη διανοία σου· και μη καταρασθής τον πλούσιον εν τω ταμείω του κοιτώνός σου· διότι πτηνόν του ουρανού θέλει φέρει την φωνήν, και το έχον τας πτέρυγας θέλει αναγγείλει το πράγμα.
