Acts 28
1 And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.
わたしたちが逃れたとき，人々はこの島がマルタと呼ばれていることを知った。
2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.
現地人たちは，わたしたちに並々ならない親切を示してくれた。雨が降り出して寒かったので，たき火をして，わたしたち全員を迎えてくれたのである。
3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid [them] on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
さて，パウロが一束の木切れを集めて火にくべていると，熱気のために一匹のマムシが出て来て，彼の手に絡みついた。
4 And when the barbarians saw the [venomous] beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.
現地人たちは，彼の手からぶら下がっているこの生き物を見ると，互いに言い合った，「きっとこの男は人殺しだ。海からは逃れたが，正義が彼を生かしておかないのだ」。
5 And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.
ところが，彼はその生き物を火の中に振り落として，何の害も受けなかった。
6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.
それでも彼らは，彼がはれ上がるか，急に倒れて死ぬだろうと思っていた。しかし，長いあいだ様子をうかがっても，彼に何も起こらないので，彼らは考えを変え，彼のことを神だと言った。
7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.
この場所の近くに，島の長官でプブリウスという人の所有地があった。彼はわたしたちを迎えて，三日のあいだ手厚くもてなしてくれた。
8 And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.
その時，プブリウスの父が熱病と赤痢で床についていた。パウロは彼のところに入って行って祈り，両手を彼の上に置いていやした。
9 So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:
このことがあってから，その島でほかに疾患のある人たちもやって来て，治してもらった。
10 Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded [us] with such things as were necessary.
彼らはまた，わたしたちに数々の敬意を示し，出航の時には，必要な物をいろいろと積み込んでくれた。
11 And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.
三か月後，わたしたちはこの島で冬を越したアレクサンドリアの船に乗って出航した。この船は「双子の兄弟」を船印としていた。
12 And landing at Syracuse, we tarried [there] three days.
わたしたちはシュラクサに寄港し，そこで三日間滞在した。
13 And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:
そこからずっと回って，レギウムに着いた。一日たつと，南風が起こったので，二日でポテオリにやって来た。
14 Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.
ここで兄弟たちを見つけ，請われるままに七日間滞在した。こうして，わたしたちはローマに着いた。
15 And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.
兄弟たちがわたしたちのことを聞いて，ローマから「アピウスの市場」と「三軒宿」まで迎えに来てくれた。パウロは彼らを見て，神に感謝し，勇気づけられた。
16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.
わたしたちがローマに入った時，百人隊長は囚人たちを守備隊長に引き渡したが，パウロは一人の番兵をつけられ，自分だけで住むことを許された。
17 And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men [and] brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
三日後，パウロはユダヤ人の指導者たちを招いた。彼らが集まった時，彼は彼らに言った，「兄弟たち，わたしは，民に対しても，わたしたちの父祖たちの慣習に対しても，何一つ背くことはしていないのに，エルサレムから囚人としてローマ人たちの手に引き渡されてしまいました。
18 Who, when they had examined me, would have let [me] go, because there was no cause of death in me.
彼らはわたしを取り調べたのち，死刑にする理由が何もなかったので，わたしを釈放しようと思いました。
19 But when the Jews spake against [it], I was constrained to appeal unto Cæsar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.
しかし，ユダヤ人たちが反対したので，わたしはやむを得ずカエサルに上訴したのです。何か自分の民族を訴えようとしたのではありません。
20 For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see [you], and to speak with [you]: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.
このようなわけで，わたしはあなた方に会って話し合いたいとお願いしたのです。わたしは，イスラエルの希望のために，この鎖につながれているからです」。
21 And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judæa concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.
彼らは彼に言った，「わたしたちはあなたについて，ユダヤから何の手紙も受け取っていないし，ここに来た兄弟たちのだれかが，あなたについて悪いことを報告したり話したりしているわけでもない。
22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.
それでも，あなたが考えていることをあなたから聞きたいと思う。この分派については，至る所で反対されていることが，わたしたちに知れているのだから」。
23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into [his] lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and [out of] the prophets, from morning till evening.
彼らは彼と日を取り決めて，大勢で彼の宿舎にやって来た。彼は朝から晩まで彼らに説明を続けて，神の王国について証言し，モーセの律法と預言者たちとの中から，イエスについて彼らを説得した。
24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.
ある者は話された事柄を信じたが，ある者は信じようとしなかった。
25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,
彼らが互いに意見の一致を見ないままに立ち去ろうとした時，パウロは一言こう言った。「聖霊は預言者イザヤを通して，わたしたちの父祖たちに正確に語って
26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:
こう言われました。 『この民のところに行って告げよ，あなた方は聞くには聞くが，決して理解しないだろう。見るには見るが，決して分からないだろう。
27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with [their] eyes, and hear with [their] ears, and understand with [their] heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
この民の心は無感覚になり，耳は聞くことに鈍くなり，目は閉じてしまった。それは，彼らが目で見，耳で聞き，心で理解し，こうして立ち返って，わたしが彼らをいやす，ということのないためだ』。
28 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and [that] they will hear it.
ですから，あなた方は知っておいてください。神のこの救いは異邦人たちに送られたのです。彼らも聞き従うでしょう」。
29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.
彼がこれらの言葉を語ると，ユダヤ人たちは大いに論じ合いながら立ち去った。
30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,
パウロは，自分の借りた家にまる二年間住んで，自分のもとに来る人たちをみな迎え入れ，
31 Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
神の王国を宣教し，あらん限りの大胆さをもって，妨げられることなく，主イエス・キリストに関する事柄を教え続けた。
