Nehemiah 2
1 And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been in time past sad in his presence.
Et, au mois de nisan, en la vingtième année du règne d'Arthasastha, le vin était devant moi, et je pris le vin et le versai au roi, et il n'y avait là en sa présence nul autre que moi.
2 Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is your countenance sad, seeing you are not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,
Et le roi me dit: D'où vient que ton visage est mauvais, et que tu ne te contiens pas? Cela ne serait point si le mal n'était en ton cœur. Et j'eus grande crainte.
3 And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchers, lies waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
Et je dis au roi: Que le roi vive toujours; comment mon visage ne serait-il pas mauvais, puisque la ville qui est la maison des sépulcres de mes pères est déserte, et que ses portes ont été brûlées par le feu?
4 Then the king said unto me, For what do you make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.
Et le roi me dit: À quel sujet me demandes-tu cela? Et je priai le Dieu du ciel;
5 And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if your servant have found favour in your sight, that you would send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchers, that I may build it.
Et je répondis au roi: S'il semble bon au roi, si son serviteur trouve grâce devant lui, je demande qu'il envoie son serviteur en Juda, à la ville des sépulcres de mes pères, et je la réédifierai.
6 And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him, ) For how long shall your journey be? and when will you return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
Et le roi et sa concubine qui siégeait auprès de lui, me dirent: Jusqu'à quand durera ton voyage? quand reviendras-tu? Et le roi le trouva bon, et il me laissa partir, et je lui donnai un terme.
7 Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;
Et je dis au roi: Si le roi le trouve bon, qu'il me donne des lettres pour les gouverneurs au delà de l'Euphrate, afin qu'ils ne mettent point d'obstacle à mon arrivée en Juda,
8 And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
Et une lettre adressée à Asaph, le garde du jardin qui appartient au roi, afin qu'il me fournisse du bois pour réparer les portes et les murs de la ville, et la maison où je me logerai. Et, comme la bonne main du Seigneur était avec moi, le roi me donna les lettres.
9 Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.
Et j'arrivai chez les gouverneurs au delà de l'Euphrate, et je leur remis les lettres du roi. Or, le roi m'avait fait accompagner par des chefs de l'armée et par de la cavalerie.
10 When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.
Et Sanaballat l'Aronite, et Tobias, le serviteur ammonite, l'ouïrent; et il était mauvais pour eux qu'un homme fût venu faire du bien aux fils d'Israël.
11 So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.
Et j'entrai à Jérusalem, et j'y restai trois jours.
12 And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.
Et je me levai de nuit, moi et quelque petit nombre de gens, et je ne dis à personne ce que Dieu m'avait mis dans le cœur de faire pour Israël; et je n'avais point de bête avec moi, sinon la bête sur laquelle j'étais monté.
13 And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.
Et je sortis par la porte de la Vallée, passant devant la fontaine des Figuiers, et allant à la porte du Fumier; et je marchais le cœur brisé, à cause des remparts de Jérusalem qu'ils avaient abattus, et des portes qu'ils avaient brûlées par le feu.
14 Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.
Et je passai devant la porte de la Fontaine, puis, devant la piscine du Roi; et il n'y avait point de place par où la bête que j'avais sous moi pût passer.
15 Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.
Alors, je m'en allai montant, de nuit, le long du torrent, et j'avais le cœur brisé, à cause du mur, et je revins à la porte de la Vallée, et je rentrai.
16 And the rulers knew not where I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.
Et les sentinelles ne surent ni où j'étais allé ni ce que je voulais faire; et, jusque-là, je n'en avais rien dit aux Juifs, ni aux prêtres, ni aux premiers du peuple, ni aux chefs, ni au reste de ceux qui faisaient les travaux.
17 Then said I unto them, All of you see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
Et je leur dis: Vous voyez l'affliction où nous sommes: Jérusalem est déserte, et ses portes ont été brûlées par le feu. Allons, relevons les remparts de la ville, et nous ne serons plus outragés.
18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.
Et je leur dis que la bonne main de Dieu était avec moi, à en juger par les paroles que le roi m'avait dites, et j'ajoutai: Levons-nous, édifions. Et leurs mains furent fortifiées en cette bonne œuvre.
19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that all of you do? will all of you rebel against the king?
Et Sanaballat l'Aronite, et Tobias le serviteur ammonite, et l'Arabe Gésam, le surent, et ils nous raillèrent, et ils vinrent à nous, et ils dirent: Qu'est-ce que vous faites? Vous révoltez-vous contre le roi?
20 Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but all of you have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.
Et je leur répliquai, et je leur dis: Le Dieu du ciel lui-même mènera notre œuvre à bien; et nous, ses serviteurs, nous sommes purs, et nous édifierons. Quant à vous, vous n'avez ni part, ni droit, ni mémorial en Jérusalem.
