< Hebrews 12 >

1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Therefore, we also having so great a cloud of witnesses set around us, having put off every weight, and the closely besetting sin, may we run the contest that is set before us through endurance,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
looking to the Author and Perfecter of the faith—Jesus, who, for the joy set before Him, endured a cross, having despised shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God;
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest all of you be wearied and faint in your minds.
for again consider Him who endured such contradiction from the sinners to Himself, that you may not be wearied in your souls—being faint.
4 All of you have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
You did not yet resist to blood—striving with sin;
5 And all of you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks unto you as unto children, My son, despise not you the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are rebuked of him:
and you have forgotten the exhortation that speaks fully to you as to sons, “My son, do not despise [the] discipline of [the] LORD, nor be faint, being reproved by Him,
6 For whom the Lord loves he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives.
for whom the LORD loves He disciplines, and He scourges every son whom He receives”;
7 If all of you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chastens not?
if you endure discipline, God bears Himself to you as to sons, for who is a son whom a father does not discipline?
8 But if all of you be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are all of you bastards, and not sons.
And if you are apart from discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are bastards, and not sons.
9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, (pneuma) and live?
Then, indeed, we have had fathers of our flesh, correctors, and we respected [them]; will we not much rather be subject to the Father of the spirits, and live?
10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
For they, indeed, for a few days, according to what seemed good to them, were disciplining, but He for profit, to be partakers of His separation;
11 Now no chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
and all discipline for the present, indeed, does not seem to be of joy, but of sorrow, yet afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those exercised through it.
12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;
For this reason, lift up the hanging-down hands and the loosened knees;
13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.
and make straight paths for your feet, so that which is lame may not be turned aside, but rather be healed;
14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
pursue peace with all, and the separation, apart from which no one will see the LORD,
15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
observing lest anyone be failing of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up may give trouble, and through this many may be defiled;
16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.
lest anyone be a fornicator, or a profane person, as Esau, who in exchange for one morsel of food sold his birthright,
17 For all of you know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
for you know that also afterward, wishing to inherit the blessing, he was disapproved of, for he did not find a place of conversion, though having sought it with tears.
18 For all of you are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
For you did not come near to the mountain touched and scorched with fire, and to blackness, and darkness, and storm,
19 And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; (rhema) which voice they that heard implored that the word (logos) should not be spoken to them any more:
and a sound of a trumpet, and a voice of sayings, which those having heard begged that a word might not be added to them,
20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
for they were not bearing that which is commanded, “And if a beast may touch the mountain, it will be stoned, or shot through with an arrow,”
21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake: )
and (so terrible was the sight), Moses said, “I am exceedingly fearful, and trembling.”
22 But all of you are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
But you came to Mount Zion, and to [the] city of the living God, to the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of messengers,
23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits (pneuma) of just men made perfect,
to the assembly-place and Assembly of the Firstborn registered in Heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to spirits of righteous men made perfect,
24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaks better things that that of Abel.
and to a mediator of a new covenant—Jesus, and to blood of sprinkling, speaking better things than that of Abel!
25 See that all of you refuse not him that speaks. For if they escaped not who refused him that spoke on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaks from heaven:
Watch out lest you refuse Him who is speaking, for if those did not escape who refused him who was divinely speaking on earth—much less we who turn away from Him who [speaks] from Heaven,
26 Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he has promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
whose voice shook the earth then, and now He has promised, saying, “Yet once [more]—I shake not only the earth, but also Heaven”;
27 And this word, Yet once more, signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
and this, “Yet once [more],” makes evident the removal of the things shaken, as of things having been made, that the things not shaken may remain;
28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
for this reason, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, may we have grace, through which we may serve God well-pleasingly, with reverence and fear,
29 For our God is a consuming fire.
for our God [is] also a consuming fire.
