< Galatians 4 >
1 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differs nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;
ahaṁ vadāmi sampadadhikārī yāvad bālastiṣṭhati tāvat sarvvasvasyādhipatiḥ sannapi sa dāsāt kenāpi viṣayeṇa na viśiṣyate
2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.
kintu pitrā nirūpitaṁ samayaṁ yāvat pālakānāṁ dhanādhyakṣāṇāñca nighnastiṣṭhati|
3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:
tadvad vayamapi bālyakāle dāsā iva saṁsārasyākṣaramālāyā adhīnā āsmahe|
4 But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
anantaraṁ samaye sampūrṇatāṁ gatavati vyavasthādhīnānāṁ mocanārtham
5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
asmākaṁ putratvaprāptyarthañceśvaraḥ striyā jātaṁ vyavasthāyā adhinībhūtañca svaputraṁ preṣitavān|
6 And because all of you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit (pneuma) of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
yūyaṁ santānā abhavata tatkāraṇād īśvaraḥ svaputrasyātmānāṁ yuṣmākam antaḥkaraṇāni prahitavān sa cātmā pitaḥ pitarityāhvānaṁ kārayati|
7 Wherefore you are no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
ata idānīṁ yūyaṁ na dāsāḥ kintuḥ santānā eva tasmāt santānatvācca khrīṣṭeneśvarīyasampadadhikāriṇo'pyādhve|
8 Nevertheless then, when all of you knew not God, all of you did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
aparañca pūrvvaṁ yūyam īśvaraṁ na jñātvā ye svabhāvato'nīśvarāsteṣāṁ dāsatve'tiṣṭhata|
9 But now, after that all of you have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn all of you again to the weak and beggarly elements, unto which all of you desire again to be in bondage?
idānīm īśvaraṁ jñātvā yadi veśvareṇa jñātā yūyaṁ kathaṁ punastāni viphalāni tucchāni cākṣarāṇi prati parāvarttituṁ śaknutha? yūyaṁ kiṁ punasteṣāṁ dāsā bhavitumicchatha?
10 All of you observe days, and months, and times, and years.
yūyaṁ divasān māsān tithīn saṁvatsarāṁśca sammanyadhve|
11 I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.
yuṣmadarthaṁ mayā yaḥ pariśramo'kāri sa viphalo jāta iti yuṣmānadhyahaṁ bibhemi|
12 Brethren, I plead to you, be as I am; for I am as all of you are: all of you have not injured me at all.
he bhrātaraḥ, ahaṁ yādṛśo'smi yūyamapi tādṛśā bhavateti prārthaye yato'hamapi yuṣmattulyo'bhavaṁ yuṣmābhi rmama kimapi nāparāddhaṁ|
13 All of you know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.
pūrvvamahaṁ kalevarasya daurbbalyena yuṣmān susaṁvādam ajñāpayamiti yūyaṁ jānītha|
14 And my temptation which was in my flesh all of you despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
tadānīṁ mama parīkṣakaṁ śārīrakleśaṁ dṛṣṭvā yūyaṁ mām avajñāya ṛtīyitavantastannahi kintvīśvarasya dūtamiva sākṣāt khrīṣṭa yīśumiva vā māṁ gṛhītavantaḥ|
15 Where is then the blessedness all of you spoke of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, all of you would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.
atastadānīṁ yuṣmākaṁ yā dhanyatābhavat sā kka gatā? tadānīṁ yūyaṁ yadi sveṣāṁ nayanānyutpāṭya mahyaṁ dātum aśakṣyata tarhi tadapyakariṣyateti pramāṇam ahaṁ dadāmi|
16 Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?
sāmpratamahaṁ satyavāditvāt kiṁ yuṣmākaṁ ripu rjāto'smi?
17 They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that all of you might affect them.
te yuṣmatkṛte sparddhante kintu sā sparddhā kutsitā yato yūyaṁ tānadhi yat sparddhadhvaṁ tadarthaṁ te yuṣmān pṛthak karttum icchanti|
18 But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.
kevalaṁ yuṣmatsamīpe mamopasthitisamaye tannahi, kintu sarvvadaiva bhadramadhi sparddhanaṁ bhadraṁ|
19 My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,
he mama bālakāḥ, yuṣmadanta ryāvat khrīṣṭo mūrtimān na bhavati tāvad yuṣmatkāraṇāt punaḥ prasavavedaneva mama vedanā jāyate|
20 I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
ahamidānīṁ yuṣmākaṁ sannidhiṁ gatvā svarāntareṇa yuṣmān sambhāṣituṁ kāmaye yato yuṣmānadhi vyākulo'smi|
21 Tell me, all of you that desire to be under the law, do all of you not hear the law?
he vyavasthādhīnatākāṅkṣiṇaḥ yūyaṁ kiṁ vyavasthāyā vacanaṁ na gṛhlītha?
22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
tanmāṁ vadata| likhitamāste, ibrāhīmo dvau putrāvāsāte tayoreko dāsyāṁ dvitīyaśca patnyāṁ jātaḥ|
23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.
tayo ryo dāsyāṁ jātaḥ sa śārīrikaniyamena jajñe yaśca patnyāṁ jātaḥ sa pratijñayā jajñe|
24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which genders to bondage, which is Agar.
idamākhyānaṁ dṛṣṭantasvarūpaṁ| te dve yoṣitāvīśvarīyasandhī tayorekā sīnayaparvvatād utpannā dāsajanayitrī ca sā tu hājirā|
25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answers to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
yasmād hājirāśabdenāravadeśasthasīnayaparvvato bodhyate, sā ca varttamānāyā yirūśālampuryyāḥ sadṛśī| yataḥ svabālaiḥ sahitā sā dāsatva āste|
26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
kintu svargīyā yirūśālampurī patnī sarvveṣām asmākaṁ mātā cāste|
27 For it is written, Rejoice, you barren that bear not; break forth and cry, you that travail not: for the desolate has many more children than she which has an husband.
yādṛśaṁ likhitam āste, "vandhye santānahīne tvaṁ svaraṁ jayajayaṁ kuru| aprasūte tvayollāso jayāśabdaśca gīyatāṁ| yata eva sanāthāyā yoṣitaḥ santate rgaṇāt| anāthā yā bhavennārī tadapatyāni bhūriśaḥ||"
28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
he bhrātṛgaṇa, imhāk iva vayaṁ pratijñayā jātāḥ santānāḥ|
29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, (pneuma) even so it is now.
kintu tadānīṁ śārīrikaniyamena jātaḥ putro yadvad ātmikaniyamena jātaṁ putram upādravat tathādhunāpi|
30 Nevertheless what says the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
kintu śāstre kiṁ likhitaṁ? "tvam imāṁ dāsīṁ tasyāḥ putrañcāpasāraya yata eṣa dāsīputraḥ patnīputreṇa samaṁ nottarādhikārī bhaviyyatīti|"
31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
ataeva he bhrātaraḥ, vayaṁ dāsyāḥ santānā na bhūtvā pātnyāḥ santānā bhavāmaḥ|
