Galatians 3
1 O foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, that all of you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ has been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
Ô Galates insensés! qui est-ce donc qui vous a ensorcelés, vous sous les yeux desquels on a fait passer l'image de Jésus-Christ crucifié!
2 This only would I learn of you, Received all of you the Spirit (pneuma) by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Je ne vous poserai qu'une question: Est-ce pour avoir observé la Loi que vous avez reçu l'Esprit, ou est-ce pour avoir entendu prêcher la foi?
3 Are all of you so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, (pneuma) are all of you now made perfect by the flesh?
Que vous êtes donc fous! Vous avez commencé par l'Esprit, et puis vous finissez par la chair!
4 Have all of you suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.
Tant d'expériences pour rien! Et encore si c'était pour rien!
5 He therefore that ministers to you the Spirit, (pneuma) and works miracles among you, does he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Celui qui vous confère l'Esprit et qui fait des miracles parmi vous, agit-il ainsi parce que vous observez la Loi ou parce que vous avez entendu prêcher la foi?
6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
Souvenez-vous qu'Abraham «eut foi en Dieu et cela lui fut compté pour justice».
7 Know all of you therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.
Sachez donc que ceux qui ont la foi pour principe sont fils d'Abraham.
8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In you shall all nations be blessed.
L'Écriture a prévu que Dieu justifierait les païens par la foi, et elle a d'avance annoncé cette bonne nouvelle à Abraham:
9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
«Toutes les nations seront bénies en toi.» Ainsi ceux qui ont la foi sont bénis avec Abraham le croyant.
10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continues not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
Ceux qui en restent aux oeuvres de la Loi sont sous le poids d'une malédiction, car il est écrit: «Maudit est quiconque n'observe pas tout ce qui est écrit dans le Livre de la Loi de manière à le pratiquer.»
11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
De plus, il est bien évident que personne n'est justifié devant Dieu par la Loi, puisque: «Le juste vivra par la foi.»
12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that does them shall live in them.
Or la Loi ne se base pas sur la foi, mais: «Celui qui pratiquera ces commandements aura la vie par eux.»
13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangs on a tree:
Christ nous a rachetés de la malédiction de la Loi, en devenant malédiction pour nous, (puisqu'il est écrit: «Maudit est quiconque est pendu au bois»),
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit (pneuma) through faith.
afin que la bénédiction accordée à Abraham passât aux païens par Jésus-Christ, et que nous obtenions par la foi l'Esprit promis.
15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man nullifies, or adds thereto.
Mes frères, quand un contrat est passé en bonne forme (je parle des usages du monde), personne ne peut l'annuler ou le modifier par addition.
16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He says not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to your seed, which is Christ.
Or, c'est à Abraham que les promesses ont été faites et à sa postérité. Il n'est pas dit: «et à ses postérités», comme s'il s'agissait de plusieurs personnes, mais, comme pour parler d'une seule: «et à ta postérité.» Il s'agit de Christ.
17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot nullify, that it should make the promise of no effect.
Eh bien, je dis ceci: Dieu ayant passé un contrat en bonne forme, la Loi venue quatre cent trente ans plus tard, ne peut le casser; elle ne peut annuler la promesse.
18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
Si on obtient l'héritage par une Loi, il ne vient plus d'une promesse. Or ce qu'Abraham a reçu de Dieu, il l'a reçu par une promesse.
19 Wherefore then serves the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
Alors, pourquoi la Loi? elle a été ajoutée à la promesse à cause des transgressions, jusqu'à la venue de «la postérité» au sujet de laquelle les promesses avaient été faites. Elle a été promulguée par des anges et par le ministère d'un médiateur.
20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.
Or, un médiateur ne dépend pas d'un seul parti. Dieu au contraire est un!
21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.
Y aurait-il alors une contradiction entre la Loi et les promesses? Pas le moins du monde. Ah! sans doute, s'il avait été donné une Loi capable de produire la vie,
22 But the scripture has concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
alors la justice viendrait de la Loi. L'Écriture a au contraire tout enfermé sous le péché, afin que la promesse soit réalisée, pour les croyants, par la foi en Jésus-Christ.
23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
Avant la venue de la foi, la Loi nous tenait prisonniers et nous gardait;
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
nous attendions la foi qui devait être révélée. La Loi a été pour nous ce qu'est un pédagogue; elle nous a conduits au Christ, pour que nous fussions justifiés par la foi.
25 But after that faith has come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
Maintenant que la foi est venue, nous ne sommes plus soumis au pédagogue.
26 For all of you are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Car vous êtes tous fils de Dieu par la foi en Jésus-Christ.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Oui, vous qui avez tous été baptisés pour être à Christ, vous êtes revêtus de Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for all of you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Il n'y a plus là ni Juif, ni païen; ni esclave, ni libre; ni homme, ni femme; vous êtes tous un en Jésus-Christ.
29 And if all of you be Christ's, then are all of you Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Et si vous êtes à Christ, vous êtes par conséquent de la famille d'Abraham, vous héritez en vertu de la promesse.
