Acts 25
1 Now when Festus was come into the province, after three days he ascended from Caesarea to Jerusalem.
Trois jours après son arrivée dans sa province, Festus monta de Césarée à Jérusalem.
2 Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,
Là, le haut sacerdoce et les autorités juives portèrent plainte contre Paul; ils lui demandèrent avec instance et comme une faveur (mais dans un but hostile) de le faire revenir à Jérusalem;
3 And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.
ils auraient dressé une embuscade pour le tuer dans le trajet.
4 But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Caesarea, and that he himself would depart shortly thither.
Festus répondit que Paul resterait prisonnier à Césarée et que lui-même y retournerait bientôt.
5 Let them therefore, said he, which among you are able, go down with me, and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness in him.
«Que les plus notables d'entre vous, ajouta-t-il, qui voudraient charger cet homme descendent avec moi et formulent leur accusation.»
6 And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Caesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought.
Il ne resta avec eux que peu de jours, huit ou dix, puis retourna à Césarée. Dès le lendemain, il siégea sur son tribunal et fit comparaître Paul.
7 And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove.
A son entrée, les Juifs, descendus de Jérusalem, l'entourèrent, en formulant de nombreuses et graves accusations qu'ils ne pouvaient prouver;
8 While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all.
tandis que Paul se défendait, en déclarant qu'il n'avait commis aucune faute ni contre la Loi juive, ni contre le Temple, ni contre l'Empereur.
9 But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Will you go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?
Là-dessus, Festus, qui voulait faire plaisir aux Juifs, dit à Paul: «Veux-tu monter à Jérusalem et y être jugé sur tout cela en ma présence?»
10 Then said Paul, I stand at Caesar's judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as you very well know.
Paul lui répondit: «C'est devant le tribunal de l'Empereur que je comparais; c'est là que je dois être jugé; je n'ai fait aucun tort aux Juifs, et tu le sais fort bien.
11 For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar.
Si je suis coupable, si j'ai mérité la mort, je ne demande pas de grâce; si, au contraire, je n'ai rien fait de ce dont ils m'accusent, personne n'a le droit de me livrer à eux par complaisance. J'en appelle à l'Empereur!»
12 Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Have you appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shall you go.
Festus, alors, s'entretint un moment avec ses assesseurs et répondit: «Tu en as appelé à l'Empereur, tu iras à l'Empereur.»
13 And after certain days king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Caesarea to salute Festus.
Quelques jours plus tard, le roi Agrippa et Bérénice vinrent à Césarée saluer Festus.
14 And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul's cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix:
Ils y restèrent plusieurs jours et Festus exposa au roi l'affaire de Paul. Il y a ici un homme, lui dit-il, que Félix a laissé prisonnier;
15 About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, desiring to have judgment against him.
pendant mon séjour à Jérusalem, le haut sacerdoce et les autorités juives ont porté plainte contre lui et m'ont demandé sa condamnation.
16 To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.
Je leur ai répondu que la coutume romaine ne permet pas de livrer un homme par complaisance, sans que l'accusé ait été confronté avec ses accusateurs et ait eu toute facilité de se justifier de l'accusation.
17 Therefore, when they were come here, without any delay on the next day I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth.
Ils sont alors venus ici et, sans perdre un moment, dès le lendemain, je siégeai sur mon tribunal et je fis comparaître cet homme.
18 Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed:
Les accusateurs qui se sont présentés n'ont relevé contre lui aucun des crimes que je m'attendais à voir établir;
19 But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.
il ne s'est agi entre eux que de subtilités relatives à leurs croyances particulières et d'un certain Jésus qui est mort et que Paul dit être vivant.
20 And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.
Ne sachant quel parti prendre dans une discussion de ce genre, j'ai demandé à Paul s'il voulait aller à Jérusalem et y être jugé sur tout cela.
21 But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Caesar.
Mais il en a appelé pour que sa cause fût réservée au jugement de Sa Majesté; j'ai alors ordonné de le garder en prison jusqu'à ce que je l'envoie à l'Empereur.»
22 Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. Tomorrow, said he, you shall hear him.
Agrippa dit à Festus: «Je voulais justement entendre cet homme.» — «Tu l'entendras demain», répondit Festus.
23 And on the next day, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus' commandment Paul was brought forth.
Le lendemain, en effet, Agrippa et Bérénice vinrent avec une suite brillante et se rendirent à la salle d'audience, accompagnés des officiers de l'armée et des principaux personnages de la ville. Sur l'ordre de Festus, Paul fut introduit.
24 And Festus said, King Agrippa, and all men which are here present with us, all of you see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.
Festus prit la parole: «Roi Agrippa, et vous tous ici présents, «Vous voyez cet homme à propos duquel tous les Juifs, en masse, et à Jérusalem et ici, sont venus m'importuner; ils me crient que je ne dois pas lui laisser la vie.
25 But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself has appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.
Moi j'ai compris qu'il n'avait rien fait qui méritât la mort; lui-même, d'ailleurs, en a appelé à l'Empereur et j'ai décidé de le lui envoyer.
26 Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before you, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have somewhat to write.
Mais je n'ai rien de bien positif à écrire à son sujet au Maître; voilà pourquoi je l'ai fait paraître devant vous, et surtout devant toi, Roi Agrippa, et, après cet interrogatoire, j'aurai quelque chose à écrire.
27 For it seems to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not likewise to signify the crimes laid against him.
En effet, je trouve absurde d'envoyer un prisonnier sans indiquer les charges qui pèsent sur lui.»
