2 Chronicles 14
1 So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his position. In his days the land was quiet ten years.
Abija se coucha avec ses pères, et on l'enterra dans la ville de David; et Asa, son fils, régna à sa place. De son vivant, le pays fut tranquille pendant dix ans.
2 And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God:
Asa fit ce qui est bon et droit aux yeux de l'Éternel, son Dieu.
3 For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:
Il fit disparaître les autels étrangers et les hauts lieux, brisa les colonnes, abattit les mâts d'ashère,
4 And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.
et ordonna à Juda de chercher l'Éternel, le Dieu de ses pères, et d'obéir à sa loi et à ses ordres.
5 Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.
Il fit disparaître de toutes les villes de Juda les hauts lieux et les images du soleil, et le royaume fut tranquille devant lui.
6 And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.
Il bâtit des villes fortes en Juda; car le pays était tranquille, et il n'y eut pas de guerre en ces années-là, parce que Yahvé lui avait donné du repos.
7 Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he has given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.
Car il dit à Juda: « Bâtissons ces villes et faisons des murs autour d'elles, avec des tours, des portes et des barres. Le pays est encore devant nous, car nous avons cherché Yahvé notre Dieu. Nous l'avons cherché, et il nous a donné du repos de tous côtés. » Ils construisirent donc et prospérèrent.
8 And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour.
Asa avait une armée de trois cent mille hommes de Juda, portant des boucliers et des lances, et de deux cent quatre-vingt mille hommes de Benjamin, portant des boucliers et tirant de l'arc. Tous ces hommes étaient de vaillants guerriers.
9 And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah.
Zérah, l'Éthiopien, sortit contre eux avec une armée d'un million de soldats et trois cents chars, et il arriva à Maréscha.
10 Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.
Asa sortit à sa rencontre, et ils se rangèrent en bataille dans la vallée de Zephatha, à Maréscha.
11 And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with you to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on you, and in your name we go against this multitude. O LORD, you are our God; let no man prevail against you.
Asa cria à Yahvé, son Dieu, et dit: « Yahvé, il n'y a personne d'autre que toi pour nous aider, entre le puissant et le faible. Secours-nous, Yahvé notre Dieu, car nous comptons sur toi, et c'est en ton nom que nous sommes venus contre cette multitude. Yahvé, tu es notre Dieu. Ne laisse pas l'homme l'emporter sur toi ».
12 So the LORD stroke the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.
Et Yahvé frappa les Éthiopiens devant Asa et devant Juda, et les Éthiopiens s'enfuirent.
13 And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the LORD, and before his host; and they carried away very much spoil.
Asa et le peuple qui était avec lui les poursuivirent jusqu'à Gerar. Les Éthiopiens tombèrent en si grand nombre qu'ils ne purent se relever, car ils furent détruits devant Yahvé et devant son armée. L'armée de Juda emporta un très gros butin.
14 And they stroke all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the LORD came upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much spoil in them.
Ils frappèrent toutes les villes des environs de Gerar, car la crainte de l'Éternel les saisit. Ils pillèrent toutes les villes, car il y avait là beaucoup de butin.
15 They stroke also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
Ils frappèrent aussi les tentes de ceux qui avaient du bétail et emportèrent en abondance des moutons et des chameaux, puis ils retournèrent à Jérusalem.
