< Psalms 30 >
1 I will extol thee, O Yhwh; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me.
Yahweh, I praise you because you rescued me. You did not allow [me to die], [with the result that] my enemies could gloat/rejoice.
2 O Yhwh my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.
Yahweh, my God, I called out for you to help [me when I was ill], and you healed me.
3 O Yhwh, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. (Sheol )
You saved/restored me when I was dying [MTY]. I was nearly dead, but you caused me to get well again. (Sheol )
4 Sing unto Yhwh, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.
All you who belong to Yahweh, sing praise to him! Think about what [God], the holy one, has done, and thank him!
5 For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
When he becomes angry, he is angry for only a very short time [HYP], but he is good [to us] all of our life. We may cry during the night, but the next morning we will be joyful.
6 And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.
As for me, when I had no troubles, I said [to myself], “No one will defeat me!”
7 Yhwh, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong: thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.
Yahweh, because you were good to me, at first you caused me to be safe [as though I was inside] [MET] a mountain. But then [I became ill, and I thought that] you had turned away from me, and I became afraid.
8 I cried to thee, O Yhwh; and unto Yhwh I made supplication.
[Then] I called out to you, and I pleaded for you [to help me].
9 What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?
[I said], “Yahweh, (what will you gain if I die?/ you won’t gain anything if I die) [MTY]. (In what way will it benefit you?/it won’t benefit you at all) if I go to the place where the dead people are [RHQ]. Dead people are certainly not able to praise you [RHQ], and they are not able to tell others that you are trustworthy [RHQ]!
10 Hear, O Yhwh, and have mercy upon me: Yhwh, be thou my helper.
Yahweh, listen to me, and be merciful to me! Yahweh, help me!”
11 Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;
But [now you have healed me], and you have caused me to change from being sad to dancing [joyfully]. You have taken away the clothes that showed that I was very sad and you have given me clothes that showed that I was [very] joyful.
12 To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O Yhwh my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.
So I will not be silent; I will sing out [loudly] to praise you. Yahweh, you are my God, and I will thank you forever.
