Joshua 23
1 And it came to pass a long time after that Yhwh had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and stricken in age.
Et bien des jours s'étaient écoulés après que le Seigneur avait donné le repos à Israël; les ennemis qui l'entouraient étaient désarmés. Josué était vieux, et avait vécu bien des jours.
2 And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and stricken in age:
Et Josué convoqua tous les fils d'Israël, leurs anciens, leurs chefs, leurs juges, leurs scribes, et il leur dit: Je suis vieux, j'ai vécu bien des jours,
3 And ye have seen all that Yhwh your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for Yhwh your God is he that hath fought for you.
Et vous avez vu comment le Seigneur notre Dieu a traité toutes ces nations devant vous, parce que le Seigneur lui-même a combattu pour vous.
4 Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.
Vous voyez que je vous ai soumis ce qui reste de toutes ces nations parmi vous, sur les territoires de vos tribus; je les ai exterminées entre le Jourdain et la grande mer qui sera votre limite à l'occident.
5 And Yhwh your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as Yhwh your God hath promised unto you.
Le Seigneur votre Dieu lui-même continuera de les exterminer devant vous, jusqu'à ce qu'elles soient toutes détruites; il enverra contre elles des bêtes farouches, tant qu'il ne les aura pas exterminées devant vous, elles et leurs rois; vous hériterez de leurs terres, comme l'a dit le Seigneur notre Dieu.
6 Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;
Efforcez-vous donc avec zèle de garder et de pratiquer tout ce qui est écrit au livre de la loi de Moïse, afin de ne vous en écarter ni à droite ni à gauche;
7 That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:
Afin de ne vous point mêler à ces nations qui existent encore. Que le nom de leurs dieux ne soit jamais prononcé parmi vous; gardez-vous de les servir ou de les adorer.
8 But cleave unto Yhwh your God, as ye have done unto this day.
Mais restez fortement attachés au Seigneur notre Dieu, comme vous l'avez été jusqu'à ce jour.
9 For Yhwh hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.
Et le Seigneur exterminera, devant votre face, ces nations grandes et puissantes; nulle, jusqu'à ce jour, n'a tenu devant vous.
10 One man of you shall chase a thousand: for Yhwh your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.
Un seul de vous a mis en fuite mille hommes, parce que le Seigneur notre Dieu lui-même a combattu pour vous, comme il vous l'a dit.
11 Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love Yhwh your God.
Et vous veillerez diligemment à aimer le Seigneur votre Dieu.
12 Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:
Car, si vous vous détournez de lui, si vous vous joignez aux nations qui sont restées parmi vous, si vous contractez chez elles des mariages, si vous vous mêlez à elles et elles à vous,
13 Know for a certainty that Yhwh your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which Yhwh your God hath given you.
Vous reconnaîtrez que le Seigneur ne continuera plus d'exterminer ces nations devant votre face. Et pour vous, elles seront des filets, des pièges, des clous sous vos pieds, et des flèches dans vos yeux, jusqu'à ce que vous soyez effacés de cette terre fortunée que vous a donnée le Seigneur notre Dieu.
14 And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which Yhwh your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.
Pour moi, je m'en vais à grands pas sur le chemin de la vie, comme font ceux qui sont sur la terre. Et vous, vous reconnaîtrez, en vos cœurs et en vos âmes, que nulle parole n'est tombée à terre de toutes celles qu'a prononcées le Seigneur notre Dieu sur tout ce qui vous concernait, et qu'il n'en a laissé aucune en arrière.
15 Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which Yhwh your God promised you; so shall Yhwh bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which Yhwh your God hath given you.
Or, de même que toutes les bonnes paroles du Seigneur se sont accomplies pour vous, de même le Seigneur sera fidèle à toutes ses menaces, jusqu'à ce qu'il vous ait effacés de cette terre fortunée que vous a donnée le Seigneur,
16 When ye have transgressed the covenant of Yhwh your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of Yhwh be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.
Si vous violez l'alliance du Seigneur notre Dieu que lui-même vous a donnée pour loi, si vous vous en allez servir d'autres dieux et les adorer.
