John 4
1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,
イエスがヨハネよりも弟子を多くつくって、バプテスマを授けていることがパリサイ人の耳にはいった。それを主が知られたとき、
2 ( Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples, )
――イエスご自身はバプテスマを授けておられたのではなく、弟子たちであったが、――
3 He left Judæa, and departed again into Galilee.
主はユダヤを去って、またガリラヤへ行かれた。
4 And he must needs go through Samaria.
しかし、サマリヤを通って行かなければならなかった。
5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
それで主は、ヤコブがその子ヨセフに与えた地所に近いスカルというサマリヤの町に来られた。
6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
そこにはヤコブの井戸があった。イエスは旅の疲れで、井戸のかたわらに腰をおろしておられた。時は六時ごろであった。
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
ひとりのサマリヤの女が水をくみに来た。イエスは「わたしに水を飲ませてください。」と言われた。
8 ( For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
弟子たちは食物を買いに、町へ出かけていた。
9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
そこで、そのサマリヤの女は言った。「あなたはユダヤ人なのに、どうしてサマリヤの女の私に、飲み水をお求めになるのですか。」――ユダヤ人はサマリヤ人とつきあいをしなかったからである。――
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
イエスは答えて言われた。「もしあなたが神の賜物を知り、また、あなたに水を飲ませてくれと言う者がだれであるかを知っていたなら、あなたのほうでその人に求めたことでしょう。そしてその人はあなたに生ける水を与えたことでしょう。」
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
彼女は言った。「先生。あなたはくむ物を持っておいでにならず、この井戸は深いのです。その生ける水をどこから手にお入れになるのですか。
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
あなたは、私たちの先祖ヤコブよりも偉いのでしょうか。ヤコブは私たちにこの井戸を与え、彼自身も、彼の子たちも家畜も、この井戸から飲んだのです。」
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
イエスは答えて言われた。「この水を飲む者はだれでも、また渇きます。
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
女はイエスに言った。「先生。私が渇くことがなく、もうここまでくみに来なくてもよいように、その水を私に下さい。」
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
イエスは彼女に言われた。「行って、あなたの夫をここに呼んで来なさい。」
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
女は答えて言った。「私には夫はありません。」イエスは言われた。「私には夫がないというのは、もっともです。
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
あなたには夫が五人あったが、今あなたといっしょにいるのは、あなたの夫ではないからです。あなたが言ったことはほんとうです。」
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
女は言った。「先生。あなたは預言者だと思います。
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
私たちの先祖は、この山で礼拝しましたが、あなたがたは、礼拝すべき場所はエルサレムだと言われます。」
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
イエスは彼女に言われた。「わたしの言うことを信じなさい。あなたがたが父を礼拝するのは、この山でもなく、エルサレムでもない、そういう時が来ます。
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
救いはユダヤ人から出るのですから、わたしたちは知って礼拝していますが、あなたがたは知らないで礼拝しています。
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
しかし、真の礼拝者たちが霊とまことによって父を礼拝する時が来ます。今がその時です。父はこのような人々を礼拝者として求めておられるからです。
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
神は霊ですから、神を礼拝する者は、霊とまことによって礼拝しなければなりません。」
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
女はイエスに言った。「私は、キリストと呼ばれるメシヤの来られることを知っています。その方が来られるときには、いっさいのことを私たちに知らせてくださるでしょう。」
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
イエスは言われた。「あなたと話しているこのわたしがそれです。」
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
このとき、弟子たちが帰って来て、イエスが女の人と話しておられるのを不思議に思った。しかし、だれも、「何を求めておられるのですか。」とも、「なぜ彼女と話しておられるのですか。」とも言わなかった。
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
女は、自分の水がめを置いて町へ行き、人々に言った。
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
「来て、見てください。私のしたこと全部を私に言った人がいるのです。この方がキリストなのでしょうか。」
30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
そこで、彼らは町を出て、イエスのほうへやって来た。
31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
そのころ、弟子たちはイエスに、「先生。召し上がってください。」とお願いした。
32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
しかし、イエスは彼らに言われた。「わたしには、あなたがたの知らない食物があります。」
33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
そこで、弟子たちは互いに言った。「だれか食べる物を持って来たのだろうか。」
34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
イエスは彼らに言われた。「わたしを遣わした方のみこころを行ない、そのみわざを成し遂げることが、わたしの食物です。
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
あなたがたは、『刈り入れ時が来るまでに、まだ四か月ある。』と言ってはいませんか。さあ、わたしの言うことを聞きなさい。目を上げて畑を見なさい。色づいて、刈り入れるばかりになっています。
36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. (aiōnios g166)
すでに、刈る者は報酬を受け、永遠のいのちに入れられる実を集めています。それは蒔く者と刈る者がともに喜ぶためです。 (aiōnios g166)
37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
こういうわけで、『ひとりが種を蒔き、ほかの者が刈り取る。』ということわざは、ほんとうなのです。
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.
わたしは、あなたがたに自分で労苦しなかったものを刈り取らせるために、あなたがたを遣わしました。ほかの人々が労苦して、あなたがたはその労苦の実を得ているのです。」
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
さて、その町のサマリヤ人のうち多くの者が、「あの方は、私がしたこと全部を私に言った。」と証言したその女のことばによってイエスを信じた。
40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
そこで、サマリヤ人たちはイエスのところに来たとき、自分たちのところに滞在してくださるように願った。そこでイエスは二日間そこに滞在された。
41 And many more believed because of his own word;
そして、さらに多くの人々が、イエスのことばによって信じた。
42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
そして彼らはその女に言った。「もう私たちは、あなたが話したことによって信じているのではありません。自分で聞いて、この方がほんとうに世の救い主だと知っているのです。」
43 Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
さて、二日の後、イエスはここを去って、ガリラヤへ行かれた。
44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
イエスご自身が、「預言者は自分の故郷では尊ばれない。」と証言しておられたからである。
45 Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilæans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
そういうわけで、イエスがガリラヤに行かれたとき、ガリラヤ人はイエスを歓迎した。彼らも祭りに行っていたので、イエスが祭りの間にエルサレムでなさったすべてのことを見ていたからである。
46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
イエスは再びガリラヤのカナに行かれた。そこは、かつて水をぶどう酒にされた所である。さて、カペナウムに病気の息子がいる王室の役人がいた。
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judæa into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.
この人は、イエスがユダヤからガリラヤに来られたと聞いて、イエスのところへ行き、下って来て息子をいやしてくださるように願った。息子が死にかかっていたからである。
48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
そこで、イエスは彼に言われた。「あなたがたは、しるしと不思議を見ないかぎり、決して信じない。」
49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
その王室の役人はイエスに言った。「主よ。どうか私の子どもが死なないうちに下って来てください。」
50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
イエスは彼に言われた。「帰って行きなさい。あなたの息子は直っています。」その人はイエスが言われたことばを信じて、帰途についた。
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.
彼が下って行く途中、そのしもべたちが彼に出会って、彼の息子が直ったことを告げた。
52 Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
そこで子どもがよくなった時刻を彼らに尋ねると、「きのう、七時に熱がひきました。」と言った。
53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
それで父親は、イエスが「あなたの息子は直っている。」と言われた時刻と同じであることを知った。そして彼自身と彼の家の者がみな信じた。
54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judæa into Galilee.
イエスはユダヤを去ってガリラヤにはいられてから、またこのことを第二のしるしとして行なわれたのである。
