James 2
1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
私の兄弟たち。あなたがたは私たちの栄光の主イエス・キリストを信じる信仰を持っているのですから、人をえこひいきしてはいけません。
2 For if there come unto your synagogue a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
あなたがたの会堂に、金の指輪をはめ、りっぱな服装をした人がはいって来、またみすぼらしい服装をした貧しい人もはいって来たとします。
3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
あなたがたが、りっぱな服装をした人に目を留めて、「あなたは、こちらの良い席におすわりなさい。」と言い、貧しい人には、「あなたは、そこで立っていなさい。でなければ、私の足もとにすわりなさい。」と言うとすれば、
4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
あなたがたは、自分たちの間で差別を設け、悪い考え方で人をさばく者になったのではありませんか。
5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
よく聞きなさい。愛する兄弟たち。神は、この世の貧しい人たちを選んで信仰に富む者とし、神を愛する者に約束されている御国を相続する者とされたではありませんか。
6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
それなのに、あなたがたは貧しい人を軽蔑したのです。あなたがたをしいたげるのは富んだ人たちではありませんか。また、あなたがたを裁判所に引いて行くのも彼らではありませんか。
7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
あなたがたがその名で呼ばれている尊い御名をけがすのも彼らではありませんか。
8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
もし、ほんとうにあなたがたが、聖書に従って、「あなたの隣人をあなた自身のように愛せよ。」という最高の律法を守るなら、あなたがたの行ないはりっぱです。
9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convicted of the law as transgressors.
しかし、もし人をえこひいきするなら、あなたがたは罪を犯しており、律法によって違反者として責められます。
10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
律法全体を守っても、一つの点でつまずくなら、その人はすべてを犯した者となったのです。
11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
なぜなら、「姦淫してはならない。」と言われた方は、「殺してはならない。」とも言われたからです。そこで、姦淫しなくても人殺しをすれば、あなたは律法の違反者となったのです。
12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
自由の律法によってさばかれる者らしく語り、またそのように行ないなさい。
13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
あわれみを示したことのない者に対するさばきは、あわれみのないさばきです。あわれみは、さばきに向かって勝ち誇るのです。
14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
私の兄弟たち。だれかが自分には信仰があると言っても、その人に行ないがないなら、何の役に立ちましょう。そのような信仰がその人を救うことができるでしょうか。
15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
もし、兄弟また姉妹のだれかが、着る物がなく、また、毎日の食べ物にもこと欠いているようなときに、
16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
あなたがたのうちだれかが、その人たちに、「安心して行きなさい。暖かになり、十分に食べなさい。」と言っても、もしからだに必要な物を与えないなら、何の役に立つでしょう。
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
それと同じように、信仰も、もし行ないがなかったなら、それだけでは、死んだものです。
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
さらに、こう言う人もあるでしょう。「あなたは信仰を持っているが、私は行ないを持っています。行ないのないあなたの信仰を、私に見せてください。私は、行ないによって、私の信仰をあなたに見せてあげます。」
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
あなたは、神はおひとりだと信じています。りっぱなことです。ですが、悪霊どももそう信じて、身震いしています。
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
ああ愚かな人よ。あなたは行ないのない信仰がむなしいことを知りたいと思いますか。
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
私たちの父アブラハムは、その子イサクを祭壇にささげたとき、行ないによって義と認められたではありませんか。
22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
あなたの見ているとおり、彼の信仰は彼の行ないとともに働いたのであり、信仰は行ないによって全うされ、
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
そして、「アブラハムは神を信じ、その信仰が彼の義とみなされた。」という聖書のことばが実現し、彼は神の友と呼ばれたのです。
24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
人は行ないによって義と認められるのであって、信仰だけによるのではないことがわかるでしょう。
25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
同様に、遊女ラハブも、使者たちを招き入れ、別の道から送り出したため、その行ないによって義と認められたではありませんか。
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
たましいを離れたからだが、死んだものであるのと同様に、行ないのない信仰は、死んでいるのです。
