< Genesis 4 >

1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from Yhwh.
Now Adam had marital relations with his wife Havah, and she conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, "I have gotten a man from God."
2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
Again she gave birth, to Cain's brother Hevel. Hevel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto Yhwh.
As time passed, it happened that Cain brought an offering to God from the fruit of the ground.
4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And Yhwh had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
And Hevel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat. And God looked favorably on Hevel and his offering,
5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
but he did not look favorably on Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.
6 And Yhwh said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
God said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?
7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
If you do well, will it not be lifted up? If you do not do well, sin lies in wait at the door. It desires to control you, but you must rule over it."
8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
Cain said to Hevel, his brother, "Let's go into the field." It happened when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Hevel, his brother, and killed him.
9 And Yhwh said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?
Then God said to Cain, "Where is Hevel, your brother?" He said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"
10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.
And God said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.
11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;
Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
From now on, when you till the ground, it won't yield its strength to you. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth."
13 And Cain said unto Yhwh, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
Cain said to God, "My punishment is greater than I can bear.
14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
Look, you have driven me out this day from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. It will happen that whoever finds me will kill me."
15 And Yhwh said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And Yhwh set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
And God said to him, "Not so. Whoever kills Cain vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold." And God appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should strike him.
16 And Cain went out from the presence of Yhwh, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
So Cain went out from the presence of God and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
Cain had marital relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Hanokh. He built a city and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Hanokh.
18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.
To Hanokh was born Irad, and Irad became the father of Mehaiel, and Mehaiel became the father of Methushael, and Methushael became the father of Lamech.
19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
Lamech took two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.
Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
21 And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
His brother's name was Jubal, who was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubal–cain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal–cain was Naamah.
Zillah also gave birth to Tubal Cain, who heated metal and shaped instruments of bronze and iron. Tubal Cain's sister was Naamah.
23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.
Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice. You wives of Lamech, listen to my speech, for I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.
24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
If Cain will be avenged seven times, truly Lamech seventy-seven times."
25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
Adam had marital relations with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, saying, "For God has appointed me another child instead of Hevel, for Cain killed him."
26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of Yhwh.
And a son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. This one began to call on the name of God.
