Acts 24

1 And after five days Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul.

Cinq jours après, arriva le souverain sacrificateur Ananias, avec quelques anciens et un orateur, un certain Tertullus; et ils exposèrent devant le gouverneur leur plainte contre Paul.

2 And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence,

Celui-ci ayant été appelé, Tertullus commença à l'accuser en ces termes:

3 We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.

La paix profonde dont nous jouissons, grâce à toi, très excellent Félix, et les réformes que ta prévoyance t'a inspirées pour le bien de ce peuple, sont accueillies par nous en tout temps et en tout lieu avec une entière gratitude.

4 Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy clemency a few words.

Mais, pour ne pas te retenir plus longtemps, je te prie d'écouter, avec ta bonté ordinaire, ce que nous dirons en peu de mots.

5 For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:

Nous avons trouvé cet homme, qui est une peste, et qui provoque des séditions parmi tous les Juifs dans le monde entier: il est le chef de la secte des Nazaréens!

6 Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law.

Il a même essayé de profaner le temple; nous nous sommes donc emparés de lui. [Nous voulions le juger selon notre loi;

7 But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands,

mais le tribun Lysias, étant survenu, l'a violemment arraché de nos mains,

8 Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him.

en donnant l'ordre à ses accusateurs de se présenter devant toi]. Tu pourras, en l'interrogeant toi-même, prendre connaissance de tous les faits dont nous l'accusons. —

9 And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so.

Les Juifs à leur tour confirmèrent ces paroles, assurant qu'il en était ainsi.

10 Then Paul, after that the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself:

Après que le gouverneur lui eut fait signe de parler, Paul répondit: Sachant que, depuis plusieurs années, tu es juge de cette nation, c'est avec confiance que je défends ma cause.

11 Because that thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem for to worship.

Tu peux t'assurer qu'il n'y a pas plus de douze jours que je suis monté à Jérusalem pour adorer.

12 And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city:

Ni dans le temple, ni dans les synagogues, ni dans la ville, on ne m'a trouvé discutant avec qui que ce soit ou ameutant le peuple.

13 Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me.

Aussi ne peuvent-ils prouver ce dont ils m'accusent maintenant.

14 But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:

Je reconnais devant toi que, conformément à une certaine doctrine qu'ils appellent une hérésie, je sers le Dieu de mes pères, croyant à tout ce qui est écrit dans la loi et dans les prophètes;

15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.

et j'ai cette espérance en Dieu, comme ils l'ont eux-mêmes, qu'il y aura une résurrection des justes et des injustes.

16 And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.

C'est pourquoi aussi, je m'efforce d'avoir toujours la conscience sans reproche, devant Dieu et devant les hommes.

17 Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings.

Or, après plusieurs années d'absence, je suis venu apporter des aumônes à ma nation et présenter des offrandes.

18 Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult.

C'est dans ces circonstances que certains Juifs d'Asie m'ont trouvé dans le temple, pendant que je me purifiais sans provoquer aucun attroupement ni aucun tumulte.

19 Who ought to have been here before thee, and object, if they had ought against me.

Ils auraient dû se présenter eux-mêmes devant toi pour m'accuser, s'ils avaient quelque chose à dire contre moi.

20 Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council,

Ou bien, que ceux qui sont ici disent de quel méfait ils m'ont trouvé coupable, lorsque j'ai comparu devant le Sanhédrin,

21 Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day.

à moins qu'ils ne me reprochent ces seules paroles que j'ai dites à haute voix au milieu d'eux: C'est pour la résurrection des morts que je suis aujourd'hui mis en jugement devant vous!

22 And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter.

Félix, qui connaissait assez exactement la doctrine dont il s'agissait, ajourna la cause, en disant: Quand le tribun Lysias sera descendu, j'examinerai votre affaire.

23 And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister or come unto him.

Puis, il commanda au centenier de garder Paul, mais de lui laisser une certaine liberté et de n'empêcher aucun des siens de lui rendre des services.

24 And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.

Quelques jours après, Félix, étant venu avec Drusille, sa femme, qui était Juive, fit appeler Paul, et l'entendit parler de la foi en Jésus-Christ.

25 And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

Mais comme Paul parlait de la justice, de la tempérance et du jugement à venir, Félix, effrayé, lui dit: Pour le moment, retire-toi; quand j'en aurai le loisir, je te rappellerai.

26 He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him.

Il espérait aussi que Paul lui donnerait de l'argent. C'est pourquoi, il le faisait venir fréquemment et s'entretenait avec lui.

27 But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix’ room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.

Deux années s'étant écoulées, Félix eut pour successeur Portius Festus. Comme il voulait faire plaisir aux Juifs, Félix avait laissé Paul en prison.
