Judges 8
1 And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.
Et les hommes d’Ephraïm lui dirent: Qu’est-ce que tu as voulu faire, en ne nous appelant point, lorsque tu allais au combat contre Madian? le querellant fortement et lui faisant presque violence.
2 And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abi-ezer?
Gédéon leur répondit: Qu’ai-je donc pu faire de semblable à ce que vous-mêmes avez fait? Une grappe de raisin d’Ephraïm ne vaut-elle pas mieux que les vendanges d’Abiézer.
3 Elohim hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.
C’est en vos mains que le Seigneur a livré les princes de Madian, Oreb et Zeb. Qu’ai-je pu faire de semblable à ce que vous-mêmes avez fait? Lorsqu’il leur eut dit cela, l’esprit dont ils étaient animés contre lui s’apaisa.
4 And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.
Et lorsque Gédéon fut venu au Jourdain, il le passa avec les trois cents hommes qui étaient avec lui; mais à cause de leur lassitude, ils ne pouvaient poursuivre les fuyards.
5 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.
Et il dit aux hommes de Soccoth: Donnez, je vous prie, des pains aux gens qui sont avec moi, parce qu’ils ont défailli, afin que nous puissions poursuivre Zébéé et Salmana, rois de Madian.
6 And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?
Les princes de Soccoth répondirent: Peut-être que les paumes des mains de Zébéé et de Salmana sont en ta main, et c’est pour cela que tu demandes que nous donnions des pains à ton armée.
7 And Gideon said, Therefore when YHWH hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.
Gédéon leur répliqua: Lors donc que le Seigneur aura livré Zébéé et Salmana en mes mains, je déchirerai votre chair avec les épines et les ronces du désert.
8 And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.
Et de là, montant, il vint à Phanuel; et il dit aux hommes de ce lieu des choses semblables; et ceux-ci lui répondirent, comme avaient répondu les hommes de Soccoth.
9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.
C’est pourquoi il leur dit à eux aussi: Lorsque je serai revenu en paix victorieux, je détruirai cette tour.
10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.
Mais Zébéé et Salmana se reposaient avec toute leur armée; car il était resté quinze mille hommes de toutes les troupes des peuples orientaux, cent vingt mille guerriers, tirant le glaive, ayant été taillés en pièces.
11 And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure.
Et Gédéon, montant par la voie de ceux qui demeuraient dans les tabernacles, vers la partie orientale de Nobé et de Jegbaa, battit le camp des ennemis, qui étaient en sécurité, et ne soupçonnaient rien de fâcheux.
12 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.
Or Zébéé et Salmana s’enfuirent; et Gédéon, les poursuivant, les prit, toute leur armée ayant été mise en désordre.
13 And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,
Et revenant du combat avant le lever du soleil,
14 And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.
Il prit un jeune garçon d’entre les hommes de Soccoth, et il l’interrogea sur les noms des princes et des anciens de Soccoth, et il écrivit soixante-dix-sept hommes.
15 And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?
Il vint ensuite à Soccoth, et il leur dit: Voici Zébéé et Salmana, au sujet desquels vous m’avez insulté, disant: Peut-être que les mains de Zébéé et Salmana sont en tes mains, et c’est pour cela que tu demandes que nous donnions des pains à tes hommes qui sont las et qui ont défailli.
16 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.
Il prit donc les anciens de la ville, et les épines et les ronces du désert et il en déchira et mit en pièces les hommes de Soccoth.
17 And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.
Il renversa aussi la tour de Phanuel, les habitants de la ville ayant été tués.
18 Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.
Et il dit à Zébéé et à Salmana: Comment étaient les hommes que vous avez tués au Thabor? Ils répondirent: Semblables à toi, et l’un d’eux, comme le fils du roi.
19 And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as YHWH liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.
Gédéon leur repartit: C’étaient mes frères, les fils de ma mère. Le Seigneur vit! si vous les aviez conservés, je ne vous tuerais pas.
20 And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
Et il dit à Jéther son premier-né: Lève-toi, et tue-les. Jéther ne tira pas son glaive, car il craignait, parce qu’il était encore jeune.
21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels' necks.
Alors Zébéé et Salmana dirent: Lève-toi, toi-même, et fonds sur nous; parce que la force de l’homme est en proportion de son âge. Gédéon se leva, et tua Zébéé et Salmana; il prit ensuite les ornements et les bulles dont on a coutume d’orner le cou des chameaux des rois.
22 Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.
Et tous les hommes d’Israël dirent à Gédéon: Commande-nous, toi, ton fils et le fils de ton fils, parce que tu nous a délivrés de la main de Madian.
23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: YHWH shall rule over you.
Gédéon leur répondit: Je ne vous commanderai point, et mon fils ne vous commandera point; mais le Seigneur vous commandera.
24 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)
Il leur dit encore: Je vous fais une seule demande: Donnez-moi les pendants d’oreilles de votre butin. Car les Ismaélites avait coutume de porter des pendants d’oreilles en or.
25 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.
Ceux-ci répondirent: Nous les donnerons très volontiers. Et étendant sur la terre le manteau, ils y jetèrent les pendants d’oreilles du butin.
26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks.
Or, le poids des pendants d’oreilles demandés fut de mille sept cents sicles d’or, sans les ornements, les colliers, et le vêtement de pourpre dont les rois de Madian avaient coutume de se servir, et outre les carcans d’or des chameaux.
27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.
Et Gédéon en fit un éphod, et il le mit dans sa ville d’Ephra. Et tout Israël tomba dans l’idolâtrie à cause de cet éphod, qui devint une ruine pour Gédéon et pour toute sa maison.
28 Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.
Mais Madian fut humilié devant les enfants d’Israël, et il ne put plus lever la tête; mais le pays se reposa pendant quarante ans que Gédéon gouverna.
29 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.
C’est pourquoi Jérobaal s’en alla et habita en sa maison;
30 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.
Et il eut soixante-dix fils qui vinrent de lui, parce qu’il avait plusieurs femmes.
31 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.
Mais sa seconde femme qu’il avait à Sichem, lui enfanta un fils du nom d’Abimélech.
32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.
Et Gédéon, fils de Joas, mourut dans une heureuse vieillesse, et il fut enseveli dans le sépulcre de Joas son père à Ephra de la famille d’Ezri.
33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their elohim.
Mais après que Gédéon fut mort, les enfants d’Israël se détournèrent, et forniquèrent avec Baal. Et ils firent alliance avec Baal, afin qu’il fût leur dieu;
34 And the children of Israel remembered not YHWH their Elohim, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
Et ils ne se souvinrent point du Seigneur leur Dieu, qui les avait délivrés de leurs ennemis d’alentour;
35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
Et ils ne firent point miséricorde à la maison de Jérobaal Gédéon, en proportion de tout le bien qu’il avait fait à Israël.
