Judges 8

1 And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.

Et les hommes d'Ephraïm lui dirent: Qu'est-ce de ta part que cette manière d'agir envers nous, de ne pas nous appeler lorsque tu marchais à l'attaque de Madian? Et ils le prirent à partie avec véhémence.

2 And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abi-ezer?

Et il leur dit: Qu'ai-je fait d'égal à vos exploits? le grappillage d'Ephraïm n'est-il pas préférable à la vendange d'Abiézer?

3 Elohim hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

C'est entre vos mains que Dieu a livré les princes Madianites Oreb et Zeeb. Qu'ai-je pu faire aussi bien que vous? Alors l'animosité qu'ils avaient contre lui, s'apaisa, comme il parlait ainsi.

4 And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

Et Gédéon, arrivé sur le Jourdain, le passa avec les trois cents hommes qui l'accompagnaient fatigués et poursuivant toujours.

5 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

Alors il dit aux gens de Succoth: Donnez donc des galettes de pain à la troupe qui me suit, car elle est rendue, et je suis à la poursuite de Zébah et Tsalmunna, rois de Madian.

6 And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

Et les chefs de Succoth lui dirent: Tiens-tu déjà captifs Zébah et Tsalmunna pour que nous donnions du pain à ton escorte?

7 And Gideon said, Therefore when YHWH hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

Et Gédéon dit: Eh bien! si l'Éternel met Zébah et Tsalmunna en mon pouvoir, je triturerai votre chair avec des ronces de la steppe et des chardons.

8 And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.

Et de là il monta à Pnuel, et il y tint le même langage, et les gens de Pnuel lui firent la même réponse que les gens de Succoth.

9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

Et il dit aussi aux gens de Pnuel: Si je reviens sain et sauf, je raserai cette tour-là.

10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

Or Zébah et Tsalmunna étaient à Carcor avec leur armée d'environ quinze mille hommes, total de ce qui était resté de toute l'armée des enfants de l'Orient: cent vingt mille hommes tirant l'épée avaient péri.

11 And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure.

Et Gédéon s'avança du côté de ceux qui logent dans des tentes, à l'orient de Noba et de Jogbeha et dressa son camp, tandis que [l'autre] camp était en sécurité.

12 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

Et Zébah et Tsalmunna prirent la fuite, et il les poursuivit, et fit prisonniers les deux rois de Madian, Zébah et Tsalmunna: il avait jeté l'épouvante dans tout le camp.

13 And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,

Alors Gédéon, fils de Joas, revint de la guerre et partit de la hauteur qui domine Hérès.

14 And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.

Et il arrêta un jeune homme d'entre les gens de Succoth, qu'il interrogea, et qui lui désigna par écrit les chefs de Succoth et les Anciens, soixante-dix-sept hommes.

15 And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

Puis il se présenta aux gens de Succoth et dit: Voici Zébah et Tsalmunna desquels vous me disiez ironiquement: Tiens-tu déjà Zébah et Tsalmunna captifs, pour que nous donnions du pain à tes gens épuisés?

16 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

Et il saisit les Anciens de la ville et prit des ronces de la steppe et des chardons, et les fit servir au supplice des hommes de Succoth.

17 And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

Et il rasa la tour de Pnuel, et massacra les gens de la ville.

18 Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

Et il dit à Zébah et Tsalmunna: Comment étaient les hommes que vous avez égorgés au Thabor? Et ils dirent: Tel tu es, tels ils étaient: ils avaient chacun la prestance de fils de rois.

19 And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as YHWH liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

Et il dit: C'étaient mes frères, fils de ma mère. Par la vie de l'Éternel, si vous leur eussiez laissé la vie, je ne vous égorgerais pas.

20 And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

Et il dit à Jéther, son premier-né: Va, égorge-les! Mais l'enfant ne tirait pas l'épée, parce qu'il avait peur, car c'était encore un enfant.

21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels' necks.

Alors Zébah et Tsalmunna dirent: Allons, toi-même, jette-toi sur nous! car tel est l'homme, telle est sa force. Alors Gédéon se leva et égorgea Zébah et Tsalmunna. Et il prit les lunules qui étaient au cou de leurs chameaux.

22 Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

Et les hommes d'Israël dirent à Gédéon: Domine sur nous, et toi et ton fils et le fils de ton fils, parce que tu nous as sauvés des mains des Madianites.

23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: YHWH shall rule over you.

Et Gédéon leur dit: Je ne dominerai point sur vous, et mon fils ne dominera point sur vous; c'est l'Éternel qui doit dominer sur vous.

24 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

Et Gédéon leur dit: J'ai une demande à vous faire: donnez-moi chacun une boucle de narine de votre butin! (Car ils portaient à la narine des boucles d'or, étant Ismaélites.)

25 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.

Et ils dirent: Nous te les donnerons. Et ils étendirent un manteau et chacun y jeta une boucle de narine de son butin.

26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks.

Et le poids des boucles de narine d'or qu'il demanda, fut de mille sept cents sicles d'or, non compris les lunules et les pendants d'oreille et les vêtements de pourpre que portaient les rois de Madian, et les colliers qui étaient au cou de leurs chameaux.

27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

Et Gédéon en fit un Ephod, et il le plaça dans sa ville, à Ophra; et tout Israël alla s'y prostituer, et ce fut un piège pour Gédéon et pour sa maison.

28 Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

C'est ainsi que les Madianites plièrent devant les enfants d'Israël, et ils ne relevèrent plus la tête. Et le pays eut un repos de quarante ans à l'époque de Gédéon.

29 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

Et Jérubbaal, fils de Joas, s'en alla habiter dans sa maison.

30 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

Or Gédéon eut soixante-dix fils, issus de son sang, car il avait beaucoup de femmes.

31 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

Et sa concubine, qui était à Sichem, lui enfanta un fils, et il lui donna le nom d'Abimélech.

32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.

Et Gédéon, fils de Joas, mourut dans une belle vieillesse, et reçut la sépulture dans le tombeau de Joas, son père, à Ophra des Abi-Ezrites.

33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their elohim.

Et lorsque Gédéon fut mort, de nouveau les enfants d'Israël se prostituèrent aux Baals, et ils firent leur dieu de Baal-Berith.

34 And the children of Israel remembered not YHWH their Elohim, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

Et les enfants d'Israël ne se souvinrent pas de l'Éternel, leur Dieu, qui les avait sauvés des mains de tous leurs ennemis d'alentour.

35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.

Et ils ne montrèrent pas à la maison de Jérubbaal, de Gédéon, une affection proportionnée à tout le bien qu'il avait fait à Israël.
