< Jonah 2 >
1 Then Jonah prayed unto YHWH his Elohim out of the fish's belly,
From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,
2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto YHWH, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. (Sheol )
saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice. (Sheol )
3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me.
4 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’
5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head.
6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O YHWH my Elohim.
To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God!
7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered YHWH: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.
As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple.
8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion.
9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of YHWH.
But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!”
10 And YHWH spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
