Jeremiah 10
1 Hear ye the word which YHWH speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
Écoutez la parole que vous dit l'Éternel, à vous, maison d'Israël!
2 Thus saith YHWH, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Ne pratiquez point la voie des nations, et des signes du ciel ne vous épouvantez pas, parce que les nations s'en épouvantent.
3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
Car le culte des nations est une vanité. C'est du bois coupé dans la forêt, travaillé par la main du sculpteur avec la hache;
4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
il le pare d'argent et d'or, le fixe avec des clous et des marteaux, pour qu'il ne vacille pas.
5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
Comme le palmier ils sont arrondis, mais ils ne parlent pas; on les porte; car ils ne marchent pas. N'ayez point peur d'eux, car ils ne sauraient nuire, et faire du bien n'est pas en leur puissance.
6 Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O YHWH; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.
Nul n'est ton égal, Éternel; tu es grand, et ton nom est grand en puissance.
7 Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.
Qui ne te craindrait, Roi des nations? car cela t'appartient; car entre tous les sages des peuples, et dans tous leurs empires personne n'est ton égal.
8 But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.
Et tous ensemble ils sont stupides et insensés: vaine doctrine! c'est du bois!
9 Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.
L'argent battu est amené de Tarsis, et l'on apporte d'Uphaz l'or que travaillent le sculpteur et la main de l'orfèvre; la pourpre rouge et la pourpre bleue les habillent; ils sont tous un travail de l'ouvrier.
10 But YHWH is the true Elohim, he is the living Elohim, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.
Mais l'Éternel est un Dieu qui est vérité; Il est un Dieu vivant, et un Roi éternel; à sa colère la terre tremble, et les nations ne soutiennent point son courroux.
11 Thus shall ye say unto them, The elohim that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.
Vous leur parlerez en ces termes: Les dieux qui n'ont point fait le ciel et la terre, seront exterminés de la terre et de dessous les Cieux.
12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.
Il a fait la terre par sa puissance, fondé le monde par sa sagesse, et déployé les Cieux par son intelligence.
13 When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.
Au son de sa voix les eaux s'amassent dans les Cieux, et Il attire les vapeurs des bouts de la terre, Il envoie les éclairs avant la pluie, et fait sortir les vents de ses magasins.
14 Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
Tout homme est stupide faute de le connaître; pour chaque fondeur ses idoles sont un sujet de honte, car l'image fondue par lui est un mensonge, et elle ne respire pas.
15 They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
C'est une vanité, une œuvre de la tromperie; au jour de leur châtiment elles seront détruites.
16 The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: YHWH of hosts is his name.
Il ne leur ressemble pas Celui qui est la part de Jacob, car Il a tout formé, et Israël est sa tribu d'héritage, L'Éternel des armées est son nom.
17 Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.
Enlève du pays tes bagages, ô toi qui es en état de siège!
18 For thus saith YHWH, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.
Car ainsi parle l'Éternel: Voici, cette fois je vais lancer avec la fronde les habitants du pays, et je les y serrerai, afin qu'ils atteignent.
19 Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it.
« Malheureuse! je suis brisée! ma plaie est douloureuse! Toutefois je dis: Oui, ce que j'ai à souffrir, je le subirai!
20 My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.
Ma tente est détruite, et tous mes cordages sont rompus, mes fils m'ont quittée, je ne les ai plus; personne ne tendra plus ma tente, et ne relèvera mes pavillons.
21 For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought YHWH: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.
Car les pasteurs s'étaient abrutis, et ils n'ont point cherché l'Éternel: c'est pour cela qu'ils n'ont point prospéré, et que tout leur troupeau a été dispersé. »
22 Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.
Une rumeur se fait entendre! le voici, il arrive avec un grand fracas de la région du Nord, pour réduire les villes de Juda en un désert, séjour des chacals.
23 O YHWH, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
« Je sais, Éternel, que l'homme n'est pas maître de sa voie, que l'homme qui marche n'a pas le pouvoir de diriger ses pas.
24 O YHWH, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.
Châtie-moi, Éternel, mais équitablement, et non en ta colère, afin de ne pas m'anéantir.
25 Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.
Verse ta fureur sur les nations qui ne te connaissent pas, et sur les tribus qui n'invoquent point ton nom; car elles ont dévoré Jacob, elles l'ont dévoré et exterminé, et elles ont ravagé son séjour. »
