< Exodus 33 >

1 And YHWH said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:
Adonai spoke to Moses [Drawn out], “Depart, go up from here, you and the people that you have brought up out of the land of Egypt [Abode of slavery], to the land of which I swore to Abraham [Father of a multitude], to Isaac [Laughter], and to Jacob [Supplanter], saying, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’
2 And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:
I will send an angel before you; and I will divorce the Canaanite [Descendant of Humbled], the Amorite [Descendants of Talkers], and the Hittite [Descendant of Trembling fear], and the Perizzite [Descendant of Belonging to village], the Hivite [Wicked], and the Jebusite [Descendants of Thresher]:
3 Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.
to a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up among you, for you are a stiff-necked people, lest I consume you on the way.”
4 And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.
When the people sh'ma ·heard obeyed· this evil news, they mourned: and no one put on his jewelry.
5 For YHWH had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.
Adonai said to Moses [Drawn out], “Tell the children of Israel [God prevails], ‘You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go up into the middle of you for one moment, I would consume you. Therefore now take off your jewelry from you, that I may know what to do to you.’”
6 And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.
The children of Israel [God prevails] stripped themselves of their jewelry from Mount Horeb [Desert] onward.
7 And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought YHWH went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.
Now Moses [Drawn out] used to take the tent and to pitch it outside the camp, far away from the camp, and he called it “The Tent of Meeting.” Everyone who sought Adonai went out to the Tent of Meeting, which was outside the camp.
8 And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.
When Moses [Drawn out] went out to the Tent, that all the people rose up, and stood, everyone at their tent door, and watched Moses [Drawn out], until he had gone into the Tent.
9 And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and YHWH talked with Moses.
When Moses [Drawn out] entered into the Tent, the pillar of cloud descended, stood at the door of the Tent, and spoke with Moses [Drawn out].
10 And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.
All the people saw the pillar of cloud stand at the door of the Tent, and all the people rose up and worshiped, everyone at their tent door.
11 And YHWH spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.
Adonai spoke to Moses [Drawn out] face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. He turned again into the camp, but his servant Joshua [Yah Salvation], the son of Nun, a young man, didn’t depart from the Tent.
12 And Moses said unto YHWH, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found favour in my sight.
Moses [Drawn out] said to Adonai, “Behold, you tell me, ‘Bring up this people:’ and you haven’t let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found chen ·grace· in my sight.’
13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find favour in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.
Now therefore, if I have found chen ·grace· in your sight, please show me now your way, that I may know you, so that I may find favor in your sight: and consider that this nation is your people.”
14 And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
15 And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.
He said to him, “If your presence does not go with me, don’t carry us up from here.
16 For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found favour in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.
For how would people know that I have found chen ·grace· in your sight, I and your people? Is not it that you go with us, so that we are separated, I and your people, from all the people who are on the surface of the earth?”
17 And YHWH said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found favour in my sight, and I know thee by name.
Adonai said to Moses [Drawn out], “I will do this thing also that you have spoken; for you have found chen ·grace· in my sight, and I know you by name.”
18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
He said, “Please show me your kavod ·weighty glory·.”
19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of YHWH before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
He said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim Adonai’s name before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show racham ·merciful love· on whom I will show racham ·mercy·.”
20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
He said, “You cannot see my face, for man may not see me and live.”
21 And YHWH said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
Adonai also said, “Behold, there is a place by me, and you shall stand on the rock.
22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
It will happen, while my kavod ·weighty glory· passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by;
23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
then I will take away my hand, and you will see my back; but my face shall not be seen.”
