1 Kings 8

1 Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the chief of the fathers of the children of Israel, unto king Solomon in Jerusalem, that they might bring up the ark of the covenant of YHWH out of the city of David, which is Zion.

Alors Salomon convoqua les Anciens d'Israël et tous les Chefs des Tribus, Patriarches des enfants d'Israël, auprès du Roi Salomon à Jérusalem, pour transférer l'Arche de l'Alliance de l'Éternel de la Cité de David, c'est-à-dire de Sion.

2 And all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto king Solomon at the feast in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month.

Et auprès du Roi Salomon se réunirent tous les hommes d'Israël, au mois d'Ethanim, à la Fête (c'est le septième mois).

3 And all the elders of Israel came, and the priests took up the ark.

Et tous les Anciens d'Israël arrivèrent et les Prêtres portèrent l'Arche.

4 And they brought up the ark of YHWH, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and all the holy vessels that were in the tabernacle, even those did the priests and the Levites bring up.

Et ils transférèrent l'Arche de l'Éternel et la Tente du Rendez-vous et tous les meubles sacrés qui étaient dans la Tente et qui furent portés par les Prêtres et les Lévites.

5 And king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel, that were assembled unto him, were with him before the ark, sacrificing sheep and oxen, that could not be told nor numbered for multitude.

Et le Roi Salomon et toute l'Assemblée d'Israël convoquée auprès de lui se tenait avec lui devant l'Arche, et l'on fit un sacrifice de moutons et de taureaux qui ne furent ni comptés, ni nombrés à cause de la quantité.

6 And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of YHWH unto his place, into the oracle of the house, to the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims.

Et les Prêtres amenèrent l'Arche de l'Alliance de l'Éternel à sa place dans le Sanctuaire de la Maison, dans le Lieu Très-Saint, sous les ailes des Chérubins.

7 For the cherubims spread forth their two wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubims covered the ark and the staves thereof above.

Car les Chérubins avaient les ailes étendues sur la place de l'Arche et formaient le dais de l'Arche et de ses barres, dans le haut.

8 And they drew out the staves, that the ends of the staves were seen out in the holy place before the oracle, and they were not seen without: and there they are unto this day.

Et l'on avait donné aux barres de l'Arche assez de longueur pour que l'on pût en voir les têtes depuis le Lieu-Saint qui précède le Sanctuaire, mais elles n'étaient pas visibles à l'extérieur; et elles y ont été jusqu'aujourd'hui.

9 There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when YHWH made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.

Il n'y avait rien dans l'Arche que les deux Tables de pierre que Moïse y avait déposées en Horeb, lorsque l'Éternel traita avec les enfants d'Israël à leur sortie du pays d'Egypte.

10 And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of YHWH,

Et il advint que, les Prêtres étant ressortis du Lieu-Saint, la Nuée remplit la Maison de l'Éternel;

11 So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of YHWH had filled the house of YHWH.

et en présence de la Nuée les Prêtres ne purent demeurer pour officier, car la Gloire de l'Éternel remplissait la Maison de l'Éternel.

12 Then spake Solomon, YHWH said that he would dwell in thick darkness.

Alors Salomon dit: L'Éternel a déclaré vouloir, habiter l'obscurité.

13 I have surely built thee an house to dwell in, a settled place for thee to abide in for ever.

Et de mon côté je T'ai élevé une Maison pour Séjour, un lieu pour ta résidence éternelle.

14 And the king turned his face about, and blessed all the congregation of Israel: (and all the congregation of Israel stood; )

Et le Roi se tournant s'avança et bénit toute l'Assemblée d'Israël, et toute l'Assemblée d'Israël était là debout.

15 And he said, Blessed be YHWH Elohim of Israel, which spake with his mouth unto David my father, and hath with his hand fulfilled it, saying,

Et il dit: Béni soit l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, qui de sa bouche a parlé à David, mon père, et de sa main accomplit, en disant:

16 Since the day that I brought forth my people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel to build an house, that my name might be therein; but I chose David to be over my people Israel.

Depuis le jour où j'ai retiré Israël, mon peuple, de l'Egypte, je n'ai pas choisi de ville dans aucune des Tribus d'Israël, pour bâtir une Maison où fût mon Nom, et j'ai fait choix de David pour présider à mon peuple d'Israël.

17 And it was in the heart of David my father to build an house for the name of YHWH Elohim of Israel.

Et David, mon père, avait à cœur d'édifier une Maison au Nom de l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël.

18 And YHWH said unto David my father, Whereas it was in thine heart to build an house unto my name, thou didst well that it was in thine heart.

Et l'Éternel dit à David, mon père: Puisque tu avais à cœur d'édifier une Maison à mon Nom, tu faisais bien de l'avoir à cœur;

19 Nevertheless thou shalt not build the house; but thy son that shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house unto my name.

seulement ce n'est pas toi qui bâtiras la Maison, mais ton fils issu de tes entrailles: c'est lui qui édifiera la Maison à Mon Nom.

20 And YHWH hath performed his word that he spake, and I am risen up in the room of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as YHWH promised, and have built an house for the name of YHWH Elohim of Israel.

Et l'Éternel a mis à effet sa parole, qu'il a prononcée, et j'ai succédé à David, mon père, et suis assis sur le Trône d'Israël, comme l'Éternel a dit, et j'ai édifié la Maison au Nom de l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël,

21 And I have set there a place for the ark, wherein is the covenant of YHWH, which he made with our fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.

et j'y ai donné une place à l'Arche où est le traité de l'Alliance conclue par l'Éternel avec nos pères, lorsqu'il les retira au pays d'Egypte.

22 And Solomon stood before the altar of YHWH in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven:

Et Salomon se plaça devant l'Autel de l'Éternel en vue de toute l'Assemblée d'Israël, et il étendit ses mains vers le Ciel et il dit:

23 And he said, YHWH Elohim of Israel, there is no Elohim like thee, in heaven above, or on earth beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart:

Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, ni là-haut dans les Cieux, ni ici-bas sur la terre, il n'existe un Dieu tel que toi qui gardes l'alliance et l'amour à tes serviteurs qui marchent en ta présence de tout leur cœur,

24 Who hast kept with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him: thou spakest also with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day.

toi qui as tenu à ton serviteur David, mon père, ce que tu lui avais promis: tu l'avais dit de ta bouche, et de ta main tu l'as accompli ce jour.

25 Therefore now, YHWH Elohim of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel; so that thy children take heed to their way, that they walk before me as thou hast walked before me.

Maintenant donc, Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, tiens à ton serviteur David, mon père, la promesse que tu lui fis en ces termes: Tu n'auras jamais faute d'un homme de par Moi pour occuper le Trône d'Israël, pourvu seulement que tes fils prennent garde à leur voie pour marcher en ma présence, comme tu as marché en ma présence.

26 And now, O Elohim of Israel, let thy word, I pray thee, be verified, which thou spakest unto thy servant David my father.

Maintenant donc, Dieu d'Israël! oh! qu'elle se confirme la parole adressée par toi à ton serviteur David, mon père!

27 But will Elohim indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?

Est-ce vraiment que Dieu habiterait sur la terre? Voici, les Cieux et les Cieux des Cieux ne te contiendraient pas; combien moins cette Maison que j'ai bâtie!

28 Yet have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O YHWH my Elohim, to hearken unto the cry and to the prayer, which thy servant prayeth before thee to day:

Mais tourne ta face vers la prière de ton serviteur et vers son invocation, Éternel, mon Dieu, pour écouter le cri suppliant et la requête qu'aujourd'hui porte devant toi ton serviteur en prière,

29 That thine eyes may be open toward this house night and day, even toward the place of which thou hast said, My name shall be there: that thou mayest hearken unto the prayer which thy servant shall make toward this place.

pour avoir jour et nuit tes yeux ouverts sur cette Maison, sur le Lieu duquel tu as dit: Mon Nom y sera! pour entendre la prière que ton serviteur adressera pour ce Lieu.

30 And hearken thou to the supplication of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place: and hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place: and when thou hearest, forgive.

Écoute donc la supplication de ton serviteur et de ton peuple d'Israël, qui élèveront leur prière pour ce Lieu, écoute-la du lieu où tu résides dans le Ciel; écoute et pardonne!

31 If any man trespass against his neighbour, and an oath be laid upon him to cause him to swear, and the oath come before thine altar in this house:

Si quelqu'un pèche contre son prochain, et qu'on lui intime le serment, pour l'adjurer, et que le serment soit porté devant ton Autel, dans cette Maison,

32 Then hear thou in heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, condemning the wicked, to bring his way upon his head; and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.

Toi, écoute des Cieux, et agis et juge tes serviteurs, pour condamner le coupable et mettre sa tête sous le poids de son méfait, et pour absoudre l'innocent et le traiter à raison de son innocence.

33 When thy people Israel be smitten down before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and confess thy name, and pray, and make supplication unto thee in this house:

Lorsque ton peuple d'Israël sera battu par l'ennemi pour avoir péché contre toi, s'il revient à toi et confesse ton Nom, et t'adresse ses prières et ses supplications dans cette Maison,

34 Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest unto their fathers.

Toi, écoute des Cieux et pardonne le péché de ton peuple d'Israël et ramène-le au pays que tu as donné à ses pères.

35 When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against thee; if they pray toward this place, and confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou afflictest them:

Quand le Ciel se fermera, et qu'on sera sans pluie pour avoir péché contre toi, s'ils élèvent leurs prières vers ce Lieu et confessent ton Nom et reviennent de leur péché parce que tu les humilies,

36 Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, that thou teach them the good way wherein they should walk, and give rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance.

Toi, écoute des Cieux et pardonne le péché de tes serviteurs et de ton peuple d'Israël, parce que tu leur montres la bonne voie qu'ils ont à suivre, et rends la pluie à ton pays que tu as donné à ton peuple en propriété.

37 If there be in the land famine, if there be pestilence, blasting, mildew, locust, or if there be caterpiller; if their enemy besiege them in the land of their cities; whatsoever plague, whatsoever sickness there be;

S'il y a famine dans le pays, s'il y a peste, s'il y a brûlure, nielle, bruches et sauterelles, s'il y a détresse, l'ennemi étant dans une de ses villes, s'il y a fléau, maladie quelconque, …

38 What prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house:

toute prière, toute supplication partant d'un individu quelconque de tout ton peuple d'Israël, s'ils comprennent chacun d'eux le coup dont leur cœur est frappé et étendent leurs mains vers cette Maison, —

39 Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men; )

Toi, écoute-la des Cieux, ton lieu de résidence, et pardonne, et traite et paie chacun à raison de toute sa conduite, selon la connaissance que tu as de son cœur, car seul tu connais le cœur de tous les enfants des hommes;

40 That they may fear thee all the days that they live in the land which thou gavest unto our fathers.

afin qu'ils te craignent tout le temps qu'ils vivront dans le pays que tu as donné à nos pères.

41 Moreover concerning a stranger, that is not of thy people Israel, but cometh out of a far country for thy name's sake;

L'étranger aussi qui n'est point de ton peuple d'Israël et vient d'un pays lointain pour l'amour de ton Nom,

42 (For they shall hear of thy great name, and of thy strong hand, and of thy stretched out arm; ) when he shall come and pray toward this house;

(car ils entendront parler de ton grand Nom et de ta main puissante et de ton bras étendu) et qui arrive et élève ses prières vers cette Maison,

43 Hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for: that all people of the earth may know thy name, to fear thee, as do thy people Israel; and that they may know that this house, which I have builded, is called by thy name.

Toi, écoute-le des Cieux, ton lieu de résidence, et accomplis tout ce que l'étranger réclamera de toi, afin que tous les peuples de la terre connaissent ton Nom et te révèrent, comme ton peuple d'Israël, et sachent que ton Nom a été invoqué sur cette Maison que j'ai bâtie.

44 If thy people go out to battle against their enemy, whithersoever thou shalt send them, and shall pray unto YHWH toward the city which thou hast chosen, and toward the house that I have built for thy name:

Lorsque ton peuple ira en guerre contre son ennemi par la voie où tu l'auras engagé, et s'ils prient l'Éternel tournés vers la Ville que tu as choisie et vers la Maison que j'ai édifiée à ton Nom,

45 Then hear thou in heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause.

écoute des Cieux leur prière et leur supplication, et leur fais droit,

46 If they sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not, ) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near;

s'ils pèchent contre toi (car il n'est pas d'homme qui ne pèche), et que tu te courrouces contre eux, et que tu les livres à la merci de leur ennemi, et qu'ils soient emmenés captifs par leurs vainqueurs au pays de l'ennemi, lointain ou rapproché,

47 Yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives, and repent, and make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness;

et si rentrant en eux-mêmes dans le pays où ils seront captifs, ils reviennent à t'implorer dans le pays de leurs vainqueurs, disant: Nous avons péché, nous avons été pervers et méchants;

48 And so return unto thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away captive, and pray unto thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name:

et s'ils reviennent à toi de tout leur cœur et de toute leur âme dans le pays de leurs ennemis qui les ont emmenés captifs, et qu'ils t'invoquent tournés vers leur pays que tu as donné à leurs pères, vers la Ville que tu as choisie et la Maison que j'ai édifiée à ton Nom,

49 Then hear thou their prayer and their supplication in heaven thy dwelling place, and maintain their cause,

alors écoute des Cieux, ton lieu de résidence, leur prière et leur supplication, et leur fais droit

50 And forgive thy people that have sinned against thee and all their transgressions wherein they have transgressed against thee, and give them compassion before them who carried them captive, that they may have compassion on them:

et pardonne à ton peuple le péché commis par lui contre toi, et toutes les rébellions dont il sera coupable envers toi et fais-leur obtenir compassion de la part de leurs vainqueurs, afin qu'ils prennent pitié d'eux.

51 For they be thy people, and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest forth out of Egypt, from the midst of the furnace of iron:

Car ils sont ton peuple et ta propriété, que tu as retirée de l'Egypte, hors du creuset de fer, —

52 That thine eyes may be open unto the supplication of thy servant, and unto the supplication of thy people Israel, to hearken unto them in all that they call for unto thee.

afin que tu aies les yeux [et les oreilles] ouvertes à la requête de ton serviteur et à la prière de ton peuple d'Israël pour les exaucer en tout ce qu'ils réclameront de toi,

53 For thou didst separate them from among all the people of the earth, to be thine inheritance, as thou spakest by the hand of Moses thy servant, when thou broughtest our fathers out of Egypt, O Sovereign YHWH.

car tu les as séparés comme ta propriété de tous les peuples de la terre, ainsi que tu l'as déclaré par l'organe de Moïse, ton serviteur, lorsque tu retiras nos pères de l'Egypte, ô Seigneur, Éternel!

54 And it was so, that when Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication unto YHWH, he arose from before the altar of YHWH, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven.

Et lorsque Salomon eut achevé d'adresser à l'Éternel toute cette prière et cette oraison, il se leva de devant l'Autel de l'Éternel où il était agenouillé les mains étendues vers le ciel,

55 And he stood, and blessed all the congregation of Israel with a loud voice, saying,

et il s'avança et bénit toute l'Assemblée d'Israël d'une voix haute et dit:

56 Blessed be YHWH, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by the hand of Moses his servant.

Béni soit l'Éternel qui a donné repos à son peuple d'Israël aux termes de toutes ses promesses! Il n'a pas laissé tomber un mot de toute l'excellente parole qu'il a prononcée par l'organe de Moïse, son serviteur.

57 YHWH our Elohim be with us, as he was with our fathers: let him not leave us, nor forsake us:

Que l'Éternel, notre Dieu, soit avec nous, comme Il fut avec nos pères, qu'il ne nous abandonne et ne nous délaisse pas,

58 That he may incline our hearts unto him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and his statutes, and his judgments, which he commanded our fathers.

afin d'incliner nos cœurs vers Lui pour que nous suivions toutes ses voies et gardions ses commandements et ses statuts et ses lois, qu'il prescrivit à nos pères!

59 And let these my words, wherewith I have made supplication before YHWH, be nigh unto YHWH our Elohim day and night, that he maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel at all times, as the matter shall require:

Et que mes paroles, ces paroles de l'invocation que j'ai faite devant l'Éternel, demeurent jour et nuit près de l'Éternel, notre Dieu, afin qu'il fasse droit à son serviteur et droit à son peuple d'Israël, selon le besoin de chaque jour,

60 That all the people of the earth may know that YHWH is Elohim, and that there is none else.

à cet effet que tous les peuples de la terre comprennent que l'Éternel est Dieu et pas d'autre!

61 Let your heart therefore be perfect with YHWH our Elohim, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as at this day.

Et que votre cœur soit tout à l'Éternel, notre Dieu, pour suivre ses statuts et garder ses commandements comme aujourd'hui.

62 And the king, and all Israel with him, offered sacrifice before YHWH.

Et le Roi et tout Israël avec lui, offrirent des sacrifices devant l'Éternel.

63 And Solomon offered a sacrifice of peace offerings, which he offered unto YHWH, two and twenty thousand oxen, and an hundred and twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the children of Israel dedicated the house of YHWH.

Et Salomon offrit pour le sacrifice pacifique qu'il offrait à l'Éternel, vingt-deux mille taureaux et cent vingt mille moutons, et c'est ainsi que le Roi et tous les enfants d'Israël firent la dédicace de la Maison de l'Éternel.

64 The same day did the king hallow the middle of the court that was before the house of YHWH: for there he offered burnt offerings, and meat offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings: because the brasen altar that was before YHWH was too little to receive the burnt offerings, and meat offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings.

Le même jour le Roi consacra l'espace du Parvis devant la Maison de l'Éternel, car c'est là qu'il sacrifia l'holocauste et l'offrande et les graisses des victimes pacifiques; car l'Autel d'airain qui est devant l'Éternel, était trop petit pour contenir les holocaustes et les offrandes et les graisses des victimes pacifiques.

65 And at that time Solomon held a feast, and all Israel with him, a great congregation, from the entering in of Hamath unto the river of Egypt, before YHWH our Elohim, seven days and seven days, even fourteen days.

Ainsi, en ce temps Salomon fit la Fête et avec lui tout Israël convoqué en grande assemblée des abords de Hamath au torrent d'Egypte devant l'Éternel, notre Dieu, pendant sept jours, puis sept jours, quatorze jours.

66 On the eighth day he sent the people away: and they blessed the king, and went unto their tents joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that YHWH had done for David his servant, and for Israel his people.

Le huitième jour il licencia le peuple; et ils bénirent le Roi et gagnèrent leurs tentes, joyeux et le cœur content de tout le bien que l'Éternel avait fait à David, son serviteur, et à Israël, son peuple.
