Matthew 20
1 FOR the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.
En effet, le royaume des cieux est semblable à un chef de famille qui sortit de grand matin afin de louer des ouvriers pour les envoyer à sa vigne.
2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
Or, après avoir fait accord avec les ouvriers à raison de un denier par jour, il les envoya à sa vigne.
3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
Et étant sorti vers la troisième heure, il en vit d'autres qui se tenaient sur la place du marché sans rien faire,
4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.
et il leur dit: « Allez aussi à la vigne, et ce qui sera juste je vous le donnerai. »
5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
Et ils y allèrent. Étant de nouveau sorti vers la sixième et vers la neuvième heure, il fit encore de même.
6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?
Puis étant sorti à la onzième, il en trouva d'autres qui se tenaient là, et il leur dit: « Pourquoi vous tenez-vous ici le jour entier sans rien faire? »
7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.
Ils lui disent: « C'est que personne ne nous a loués. » Il leur dit: « Vous aussi allez à la vigne. »
8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
Or, quand le soir fut venu, le maître de la vigne, dit à son intendant: « Appelle les ouvriers, et paie-leur leur salaire, en allant des derniers aux premiers. »
9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
Or, ceux de la onzième heure étant venus reçurent chacun un denier;
10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
et les premiers étant venus crurent qu'ils recevraient davantage, et ils reçurent eux aussi un denier par tête.
11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,
Mais après l'avoir reçu, ils murmuraient contre le chef de famille,
12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
en disant: « Ceux-ci venus les derniers ont travaillé une seule heure, et tu les as égalés à nous, qui avons supporté le poids du jour et l'ardente chaleur! »
13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?
Mais il répliqua à l'un d'eux: « Camarade, je ne te fais aucun tort; n'as-tu pas fait accord avec moi à raison d'un denier?
14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.
Prends ce qui est à toi, et t'en vas. Pour moi, je veux donner à celui-ci qui est venu le dernier autant qu'à toi.
15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?
Ne m'est-il pas permis de faire ce que je veux de ce qui est à moi? Ou bien vois-tu de mauvais œil que je sois bon? »
16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.
Ainsi les derniers seront des premiers et les premiers des derniers. »
17 And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them,
Or, comme Jésus allait monter à Jérusalem, il prit à part les douze disciples et leur dit en chemin:
18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,
« Voici, nous montons à Jérusalem, et le fils de l'homme sera livré aux grands prêtres et aux scribes, et ils le condamneront,
19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.
et ils le livreront aux gentils pour qu'ils le bafouent, le fustigent et le crucifient, et le troisième jour il ressuscitera. »
20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.
Alors la mère des fils de Zébédée s'approcha de lui avec ses fils, l'adorant et sollicitant quelque chose de lui;
21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.
mais il lui dit: « Que veux-tu? » Or elle dit: « Ordonne que mes deux fils, que voici, soient assis, l'un à ta droite et l'autre à ta gauche, dans ton royaume. »
22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
Mais Jésus répliqua: « Vous ne savez ce que vous demandez. Pouvez-vous boire la coupe que moi je dois boire? » Ils lui disent: « Nous le pouvons. »
23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
Il leur dit: « Vous boirez il est vrai ma coupe, mais pour ce qui est d'être assis à ma droite ou à ma gauche, il ne dépend pas de moi de l'accorder, sauf à ceux pour lesquels cela a été préparé par mon Père. »
24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.
Ce que les dix ayant ouï, ils furent indignés contre les deux frères.
25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
Mais Jésus les ayant appelés à lui, dit: « Vous savez que les chefs des nations les tyranniseront et que les grands les oppriment.
26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
Il n'en est pas de même parmi vous. Mais celui qui voudra devenir grand parmi vous sera votre serviteur;
27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
et que celui qui voudra être le premier de vous soit votre esclave.
28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
C'est ainsi que le fils de l'homme n'est pas venu pour être servi, mais pour servir, et pour donner sa vie comme une rançon pour plusieurs. »
29 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.
Et, comme ils sortaient de Jéricho, une foule nombreuse le suivit;
30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
et voici, deux aveugles assis sur le bord du chemin ayant appris que Jésus passait, s'écrièrent: « Seigneur, aie pitié de nous, fils de David! »
31 And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
Or la foule leur fit des remontrances afin qu'ils se tussent, mais ils s'écrièrent de plus belle: « Seigneur, aie pitié de nous, fils de David! »
32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?
Et Jésus s'étant arrêté les appela et dit: « Que voulez-vous que je fasse pour vous? »
33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.
Ils lui disent: « Seigneur, que nos yeux s'ouvrent. »
34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
Or Jésus, ému de compassion, toucha leurs yeux, et aussitôt ils recouvrèrent la vue et ils le suivirent.
